Alturas Tent Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Stanley, Idaho, area, Alturas Tent Campground, located on Alturas Creek Rd, Stanley, ID 83301, USA, and reachable by phone at (928) 537-8888 or +1 928-537-8888, offers a promising option for a tranquil lakeside camping experience. The user reviews available online provide insights into its appealing environment and features, while also highlighting a recent issue with restroom facilities that potential visitors should be aware of.
When local users search for "camping near me," they often seek locations that provide a balance of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and a comfortable camping environment. Alturas Tent Campground appears to emphasize the natural aspects, particularly its lakeside location and peaceful atmosphere, making it an attractive choice for those looking to escape the noise and crowds often associated with more developed campgrounds.
Environment:
The reviews consistently highlight the pleasant environment of Alturas Tent Campground. One reviewer described it as a "really nice little campground," indicating a potentially smaller and more intimate setting compared to larger camping facilities. A significant draw is its location "right on the lake shore," offering campers direct access to the water and likely scenic lake views. This lakeside setting would provide opportunities for various water-based activities such as swimming, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the shore.
Another key aspect of the environment is its tranquility. The campground is praised for being "far away from noisy trailers with their blaring TVs and generators," suggesting a peaceful atmosphere where campers can enjoy the sounds of nature rather than artificial noise. This quiet environment is particularly appealing to those seeking a restful retreat in the outdoors.
Furthermore, one reviewer mentioned that "the night sky is just breathtaking," indicating that the location offers excellent conditions for stargazing, likely due to minimal light pollution in the remote Stanley area. This is a significant environmental feature for astronomy enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates the beauty of the night sky.
The surrounding area of Stanley, Idaho, is known for its stunning mountain scenery, being situated within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Campers at Alturas Tent Campground can likely expect to be surrounded by majestic peaks, forests, and the pristine waters of Alturas Lake, contributing to an overall picturesque and natural camping environment.
Services:
The information regarding services at Alturas Tent Campground is somewhat mixed based on the user reviews. Initially, the campground had "outhouses," which were later "closed and replaced with a bunch of porta potties." One reviewer noted this change as a downside, especially because "all of them were filled to capacity." This is a critical piece of information for potential visitors, indicating a significant issue with the maintenance of the temporary restroom facilities during at least one user's experience.
The same reviewer mentioned using the facilities at the day-use area "just down the road" as an alternative, suggesting that there might be better-maintained restrooms available nearby, although not directly within the campground itself. This implies that while the on-site facilities might be inadequate, a solution might be accessible with a short walk or drive.
The first reviewer mentioned "portapotties which I won't complain about nor praise," suggesting that while they were present, they were perhaps just basic and functional. This contrasts with the later review indicating they were overfilled, highlighting a potential inconsistency in maintenance or a recent deterioration of conditions.
Beyond restroom facilities, there is no information provided about other services such as potable water, trash disposal, fire rings, or picnic tables at individual campsites. As a "tent campground," it might cater primarily to those with their own camping gear and supplies, with minimal developed amenities.
Local users searching for "camping near me" who rely on well-maintained restroom facilities should take the recent negative review about the porta potties being filled to capacity seriously and perhaps inquire about the current status of these facilities before planning their trip. It might also be prudent to be prepared with personal sanitation supplies.
Features:
The standout features of Alturas Tent Campground are its lakeside location, the resulting access to water-based activities and scenic views, and its quiet atmosphere away from noisy RVs and generators. These features make it particularly appealing to tent campers seeking a more natural and peaceful experience.
The "breathtaking night sky" is another significant feature, attracting those interested in astronomy and enjoying the unpolluted views of the stars. This suggests a location with minimal artificial lighting, enhancing the natural beauty of both the day and night environments.
The proximity to Alturas Lake itself offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the water's edge. The surrounding Sawtooth National Recreation Area provides access to numerous hiking trails, scenic drives, and other outdoor adventures, making Alturas Tent Campground a potential basecamp for exploring the wider region.
The fact that it is primarily a "tent campground" might also be a feature for those who prefer a camping environment focused on tents rather than being dominated by large recreational vehicles. This can contribute to a more traditional and nature-oriented camping experience.
However, the recent issue with overfilled porta potties is a significant negative feature that potential visitors should be aware of and hopefully will be addressed by the campground management.
Promotional Information:
For local users in the Stanley, Idaho, area searching for "camping near me" and desiring a tranquil lakeside retreat, Alturas Tent Campground offers a potentially ideal setting. Imagine pitching your tent just steps from the shore of Alturas Lake, enjoying peaceful days by the water and breathtaking nights under a star-filled sky. This campground is praised for its quiet atmosphere, away from the noise of generators and RVs, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural sounds of the lake and the surrounding wilderness.
If you are a tent camper who values a serene environment and stunning natural beauty, Alturas Tent Campground could be your perfect getaway. The opportunity for lakeside activities and the spectacular stargazing are significant draws. It would be wise to come prepared with personal sanitation supplies and perhaps check recent conditions if possible.

Aug 04, 2022 · Sean AGreat campground. Far away from noisy trailers with their blaring TVs and generators. It's right on the lake shore and very quiet. The only downside was the outhouses were closed and replaced with a bunch of porta potties. Sadly, all of them were filled to capacity. I used the facilities at the day use area just down the road.
