Big Bayhorse Campground Introduce
For local camping enthusiasts seeking a secluded and intimate "camping near me" experience, Big Bayhorse Campground, located near Challis, Idaho, offers a unique destination. This "awesome little campground" is characterized by its small size, boasting only eight campsites, which necessitates advance planning to secure a spot. While the campground is lauded for its charm and the fantastic fishing opportunities nearby, potential visitors should be aware of certain access conditions and the lack of an on-site water supply, requiring them to be self-sufficient in this regard.
The environment surrounding Big Bayhorse Campground is described as "amazing," suggesting a setting of significant natural beauty. Challis, Idaho, is situated in a region known for its rugged mountains, pristine rivers, and expansive wilderness areas. It is likely that Big Bayhorse Campground benefits from this stunning landscape, offering campers picturesque views and a sense of being immersed in nature. The fact that it is "a little ways in" further implies a degree of seclusion and tranquility, away from more heavily trafficked areas. The presence of water, indicated by the "fantastic fishing," suggests proximity to a river or creek, which would enhance the scenic appeal and provide opportunities for waterside relaxation. However, one review notes that the water was warm, potentially impacting the fish and their stress levels, a factor anglers might want to consider depending on the time of year.
In terms of services, the reviews provide some crucial information. Notably, there is "no water supplied" at Big Bayhorse Campground, emphasizing the absolute necessity for campers to bring "plenty of water" for drinking, cooking, and all other needs. This lack of on-site water is a significant factor that potential visitors must be prepared for. The mention of only eight spots indicates a very limited capacity, suggesting that reservations or early arrival might be essential, especially during peak camping seasons. Other typical campground amenities, such as restrooms, picnic tables, or fire rings, are not explicitly mentioned in the reviews. Given the small size and somewhat remote nature implied by the access road, the facilities might be basic. Campers should be prepared for a more rustic experience and bring all necessary camping gear, keeping in mind the absence of a water supply.
A key feature of Big Bayhorse Campground is the "fantastic fishing" available nearby. This is a significant draw for anglers looking for a rewarding fishing experience in the Challis area. The presence of a river or creek accessible from the campground is implied, offering the potential to catch local fish species. However, the observation that the water was warm and the fish appeared stressed suggests that water temperatures might be a factor affecting fishing conditions at certain times of the year. Anglers might want to inquire about current water conditions and fishing reports before planning their trip. Despite this concern, the overall sentiment regarding the fishing is positive.
Another important feature, and a potential challenge, is the access road, described as "steep narrow." This indicates that reaching the campground might require careful driving, especially for larger vehicles or those towing trailers. The road conditions could be a factor in determining the suitability of certain types of camping setups. Drivers should be prepared for potentially winding and inclined roads and exercise caution while navigating to and from the campground. The remoteness implied by the road conditions likely contributes to the campground's secluded and peaceful atmosphere.
For local users searching for "camping near me" that offers excellent fishing in a secluded setting, Big Bayhorse Campground near Challis, ID, is a noteworthy option. However, the very limited number of campsites (only eight) means that planning ahead is crucial. The "steep narrow access road" is another important consideration for the type of vehicle and driving experience needed to reach the campground. Most importantly, the complete lack of a water supply necessitates bringing an ample amount of water for the entire duration of the stay. Despite these challenges, the "amazing" environment and "fantastic fishing" suggest a rewarding experience for those who come prepared.
Currently, there is no information available regarding specific promotional offers for Big Bayhorse Campground in the provided reviews. Given its small size and potentially remote management (it's not clear if it's a public or private campground from the reviews), it may not have regular promotions. Local residents interested in potential fees or reservation procedures should try to contact the managing authority using the provided phone number. Be aware that the phone number listed has the (208) area code, which covers Idaho, so it is likely a local contact for the region. Inquiring about whether reservations are accepted and what the fee structure is would be prudent, especially given the limited number of sites.
In conclusion, Big Bayhorse Campground near Challis, ID, offers a potentially exceptional "camping near me" experience, particularly for those prioritizing fishing and a secluded natural environment. The "amazing" surroundings and "fantastic fishing" are significant draws. However, local campers must be fully aware of the campground's limitations: the very small number of campsites requires careful planning, the "steep narrow access road" demands cautious driving, and the complete absence of a water supply necessitates bringing all the water needed. For those who are prepared for these conditions, Big Bayhorse Campground promises a tranquil and rewarding escape into the Idaho wilderness with excellent fishing opportunities. Contacting the managing authority for details on reservations and any fees is highly recommended.

Big Bayhorse Campground Reviews
Awesome little campground!! Just the right size, only 8 spots so you need to plan ahead. It is a little ways in , so make sure and bring plenty of water as there is none supplied.
Aug 26, 2020 · Ryan HartAmazing campground with a steep narrow access road.Fishing was fantastic but the water was warm and the fish were noticeably stressed.
Aug 09, 2022 · Steven MeansLovely little overnighter off 75. Looks like it's normally well maintained but mid September found the vault toilet lacking paper AND the sprinklers turned on a little after 10 AM soaking us, out dog, our chairs and table. We left immediately after rescuing our stuff and drying all of us hastily with towels. What the heck?
Sep 19, 2021 · Cindy SwanBeautiful place. Plenty of trout in the lake. Campsite was nice with a picnic table and fire pits. There were pit toilets. The road up was a little rough in a couple spots, but I made it up in a minivan.
