Eightmile Campground

Stanley, ID 83278, USA

4.0
This campground is more like a boondocking area than a regular campground. There are several sites that can accommodate any size RV. It is right next to Eightmile Creek. There is a pit toilet and it was cleaner than most regular campground toilets so kudos to the Forest Service employee who takes care of this one. Of special note Google shows Eightmile Creek road as being open but this road is no longer accessible...it is blocked and plowed up off of the Custer main road. I added a pic of this. - Flying Dutchman

Eightmile Campground Introduce

Located in the vicinity of Stanley, Idaho (address listed as Stanley, ID 83278, USA), Eightmile Campground offers a more primitive camping experience for those searching within the "camping near me" category. Based on customer reviews, this campground leans towards a boondocking style of camping rather than a fully developed campground with extensive amenities. This introduction aims to provide local users with a detailed and objective overview of what to expect at Eightmile Campground based on the available information.

One reviewer describes Eightmile Campground as "more like a boondocking area than a regular campground," which sets the expectation for a more self-sufficient camping experience with fewer amenities. Despite this rustic nature, the reviewer notes a significant positive aspect: "There are several sites that can accommodate any size RV." This is valuable information for RV owners in the area looking for accessible camping spots. The ability to accommodate various RV sizes suggests that the campsites are likely spacious and can handle larger vehicles.

The campground's environment is directly linked to its natural surroundings, as it is situated "right next to Eightmile Creek." This proximity to a creek suggests potential access to water (though its potability is not mentioned) and the likelihood of a natural, possibly scenic setting. The presence of a creek often enhances the camping experience with opportunities for wildlife viewing and the soothing sounds of flowing water. However, the second reviewer's comment about a dry creek at another location (presumably nearby or at a different time) indicates that water levels might fluctuate seasonally or be location-specific within the broader area.

In terms of services and features, Eightmile Campground appears to offer very basic facilities. The first reviewer mentions the presence of "a pit toilet," which is a common amenity in more primitive or boondocking-style campgrounds. Notably, they commend the cleanliness of this facility, stating it "was cleaner than most regular campground toilets so kudos to the Forest Service employee who takes care of this one." This positive feedback about the cleanliness of the pit toilet is a significant point for those who prioritize hygiene even in a rustic setting. However, the second reviewer advises campers to "take toilet paper because the forest service does not keep the out house stocked with it," highlighting a potential lack of consistent stocking of this essential supply.

A crucial piece of information from the first reviewer concerns access to the campground. They point out a discrepancy with online mapping services, stating, "Of special note Google shows Eightmile Creek road as being open but this road is no longer accessible...it is blocked and plowed up off of the Custer main road. I added a pic of this." This is vital information for local users planning a visit, as relying on online maps alone could lead to significant inconvenience. The reviewer's observation that the road is "blocked and plowed up" suggests a permanent or long-term change in access, likely requiring an alternative route. The reference to the "Custer main road" implies that access might be via a different road connected to this main thoroughfare.

Considering the boondocking nature of the campground, it is unlikely to offer amenities such as electrical hookups, water hookups at individual sites, or sewer hookups. Campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient in these areas. The lack of mention of trash receptacles might also imply a "pack it in, pack it out" policy, which is common in primitive camping areas to minimize environmental impact.

The environment around Stanley, Idaho, is known for its stunning natural beauty, including the Sawtooth Mountains, pristine lakes, and rivers. Eightmile Campground's location near Eightmile Creek likely places it within this scenic region, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing in the surrounding wilderness. However, the specific features of the campground itself, such as the number of campsites, their spacing, and the presence of any natural shade, are not detailed in the reviews.

There is no promotional information available for Eightmile Campground in the provided text. Details about fees, reservation procedures (if any), or any special regulations are not mentioned. Local users interested in camping here would need to seek this information from the U.S. Forest Service, which appears to be the managing authority based on the mention of their employee maintaining the pit toilet.

For local users in the Stanley, ID area searching for "camping near me" and open to a more rustic, boondocking-style experience, Eightmile Campground offers a location right by Eightmile Creek with sites suitable for various RV sizes. The cleanliness of the pit toilet is a notable positive. However, potential campers must be aware of the need to bring their own toilet paper and, critically, the change in access via Eightmile Creek Road. They should plan their route accordingly, likely using the Custer main road as a reference point for the correct access.

Given the nature of a boondocking area, campers should also be prepared for a self-sufficient stay, likely without hookups for water, electricity, or sewer. They should also consider the potential for seasonal variations in creek water levels. The quiet and natural environment alongside the creek could be a significant draw for those seeking a more secluded and wilderness-oriented camping experience.

In conclusion, Eightmile Campground near Stanley, ID, provides a rustic, boondocking-style camping option with spacious RV sites located next to Eightmile Creek. While the pit toilet is noted for its cleanliness, campers should bring their own supplies. A critical piece of information is the inaccessibility of Eightmile Creek Road as shown on some maps, requiring an alternative route via the Custer main road. For local users seeking a more primitive camping experience in a potentially beautiful natural setting, Eightmile Campground could be a viable option, provided they are prepared for self-sufficiency and the access road situation.
