Upper O'Brien Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking a tranquil "camping near me" experience along the scenic Salmon River, Upper O'Brien Campground, located on Robinson Bar Rd in Stanley, ID 83278, USA, and reachable at (208) 737-3200 or +1 208-737-3200, offers a potentially appealing option for overnight stays or short getaways. While specific promotional information is not provided, the available reviews offer a balanced perspective on the campground's environment, amenities, and overall condition, which is crucial for local users considering a visit.
Environment and Location: Upper O'Brien Campground boasts a desirable location directly adjacent to the Salmon River. This prime riverside setting provides campers with the soothing sounds of flowing water and easy access for potential fishing or simply enjoying the natural beauty of the riverbank. The campground is described as "quiet" and "very pleasant," suggesting a peaceful atmosphere conducive to relaxation. While the entrance involves crossing a one-lane bridge, reviewers indicate that this is manageable even for vehicles with longer pull-behind trailers, alleviating potential concerns about accessibility for many types of camping setups. The surrounding environment along the Salmon River in the Stanley area is known for its natural beauty, offering a picturesque backdrop for a camping experience.
Services and Amenities: The campground offers basic but functional amenities. Campsites are reported to be "fairly level," which is essential for comfortable parking and setting up tents or RVs. Each site is equipped with a fire ring for campfires and a picnic table for meal preparation and gathering. A notable feature is the presence of a hand pump for accessing cool drinking water, a valuable amenity for campers relying on self-sufficiency. However, a significant drawback highlighted in the reviews is the presence of only one pit toilet, which is described as being in poor repair, with crumbling floors and holes in the walls. This is a critical factor for potential visitors to consider regarding sanitation facilities. Additionally, the reviews explicitly mention the absence of an on-site camp host, which has contributed to the overall condition of the campground.
Features and Highlights: The primary highlight of Upper O'Brien Campground is undoubtedly its location right on the Salmon River, offering a serene and scenic camping environment. The quiet atmosphere is another significant draw, particularly for those seeking a peaceful retreat in nature. The level campsites, fire rings, and picnic tables provide the basic necessities for a comfortable camping experience. The availability of a hand pump for drinking water is a positive aspect for self-sufficient campers. The reviewer who stayed with an 18-foot trailer found the entrance manageable, suggesting reasonable accessibility for various vehicle sizes. The feeling of solitude at night, attributed to the campground rarely being full, might appeal to those seeking a more private camping experience.
Areas for Improvement: The reviews clearly point out areas where Upper O'Brien Campground could significantly enhance the camping experience. The poor condition of the single pit toilet is a major concern and a deterrent for potential visitors accustomed to more maintained facilities. The absence of an on-site camp host appears to have contributed to the campground's less-than-ideal overall condition. Reviewers suggest that upgrading the toilets and having a full-time host for both Upper and Lower O'Brien campgrounds could transform these locations into some of the best in the area. The current nightly cost of $20 is mentioned, and while it might seem reasonable for a riverside location, potential visitors will need to weigh this against the existing condition of the facilities and the lack of on-site management.
Suitability for Local Users Seeking "Camping Near Me": For local residents looking for "camping near me" along the Salmon River, Upper O'Brien Campground offers an affordable option with a pleasant and quiet environment. The easy access for various vehicle types and the basic amenities provided make it suitable for overnight stays or short trips. However, local users should be fully aware of the significant drawback of the poorly maintained single pit toilet and the absence of a camp host. If these factors are not major concerns, the riverside location and peaceful atmosphere might still make it an attractive choice, especially for those prioritizing a natural setting over well-maintained facilities. It could be a good option for more self-sufficient campers who are comfortable with rustic conditions. Visiting during less peak times might also mitigate any potential issues with the single toilet. Local users might also consider walking to the nearby Lower O'Brien Campground (if accessible on foot from Upper O'Brien, as mentioned) to assess its conditions, although one reviewer advises against bringing RVs into Lower O'Brien.
In conclusion, Upper O'Brien Campground near Stanley, Idaho, offers a quiet and scenic camping experience right on the Salmon River. Its level campsites, fire rings, picnic tables, and hand-pumped water provide basic camping necessities. However, the significantly dilapidated single pit toilet and the lack of an on-site host are crucial factors that local users should consider. For those prioritizing a riverside location and a peaceful atmosphere at an affordable price, and who are willing to tolerate rustic conditions, Upper O'Brien Campground could be a viable option for "camping near me." Potential visitors should weigh the natural appeal against the limitations of the facilities before making a decision.

Upper O'Brien Campground Reviews
Great place right on the Salmon River to spend the night or a couple of days. There is a one lane bridge you have to cross to get to the campground but this didn't seem to be a problem for even longer pull behinds. The sites are fairly level, fire rings and table. There is a hand pump for cool drinking water. There is only one pit toilet which looks to be original to the campground...the floors are crumbling, holes in the walls and in general poor repair. There is no host on site and the overall condition of the campground was evident of that. The cost is $20 a night. If they up graded the toilets and got a full time host for the Upper and Lower O Brien campgrounds this could be one of the best campgrounds in the area.
Jul 18, 2023 · Flying DutchmanQuiet campground to stay in. Very pleasant, right next to the Salmon River. The entrance to this campground probably seems a little difficult, I did it with my truck and a 18 foot trailer and I had no problem at all. I think it is inadvisable to try to bring an RV into the Lower O'Brian campground, although you could walk from Upper to Lower and see for yourself. Regardless, Upper is really nice and peaceful and at night you really do get that feeling of solitude because this seems like a campground which is rarely full.
Sep 04, 2018 · Ernest KyedNice campground, the roads Are all dirt and gravel. Nice quiet campground for the weekend getaway or a 2 week stay. Water is drawn from a long handle pump like the old days.

Jan 31, 2022 · Shem IshlerA great, little campground off the road. Great access to the river, bathrooms, water pump and dump. A little traffic noise but mostly you hear the river.
