Basin Creek Campground Introduce
For those in search of "camping near me" around the Stanley, Idaho region, Basin Creek Campground presents a distinctive option for a more secluded and rustic outdoor adventure. Located near Stanley, ID 83278, USA, this former Forest Service campground now operates without the usual amenities, offering a free camping experience for those seeking a more primitive and independent outing. If you appreciate a quieter setting away from busier campgrounds and the simplicity of nature, Basin Creek might be the place for you.
Based on the available user reviews, Basin Creek Campground offers a unique environment characterized by its relative isolation compared to the larger, more developed Forest Service campgrounds near Redfish Lake and along Highway 75. It also distinguishes itself from dispersed camping, which often involves finding your own spot without any designated facilities. Basin Creek provides a middle ground, offering designated sites in a more natural and less crowded setting.
One of the most notable features of Basin Creek Campground is that it is currently operating as a free campground. This can be a significant advantage for budget-conscious travelers or those who prefer a more self-sufficient camping experience. However, it's crucial to understand that this lack of fees also means the absence of typical campground amenities. According to the reviews, there is no camp host present, and services like firewood are not provided. Campers should be prepared to be entirely self-sufficient in terms of supplies, including firewood, water, and waste disposal.
The reviews also highlight some important environmental factors to consider. The area has a history of flooding (reportedly in 2006) and more recent fire activity. Therefore, it is essential to exercise caution and be aware of potential hazards. Checking local conditions and fire danger levels before your visit is highly recommended. Additionally, being mindful of the surrounding environment and practicing Leave No Trace principles is crucial in maintaining the natural beauty of this area.
Despite the lack of formal amenities, Basin Creek Campground does offer some basic infrastructure. The reviews indicate the presence of a few campsites (around six, according to one account), each equipped with a picnic table and a metal fire ring. Additionally, an outhouse is located near sites 3 through 6, providing a rudimentary restroom facility. Campers should still come prepared with their own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as the upkeep of such facilities in a free, unmanaged campground can be variable.
The access to Basin Creek Campground via Basin Creek Road is described as "a bit scary in the dark" due to its location along a cliff above a river. However, the reviewer noted that a 4x4 vehicle or high clearance did not seem necessary in August 2020. Road conditions can change, so it's always wise to check recent reports or local information, especially if traveling during different seasons or in inclement weather. Exercise caution while driving on this road, particularly at night.
One of the significant draws of Basin Creek Campground, as mentioned by a reviewer, is the opportunity to sleep next to the creek. This offers the soothing sounds of flowing water and potentially greater privacy and natural beauty compared to more crowded campgrounds. The smaller number of sites also contributes to a more secluded and peaceful camping experience.
Another camper mentioned that the area was "very pretty" but experienced "extremely bad wind every day." This suggests that wind can be a significant factor at this location. Campers, especially those using tents, should be prepared for potentially strong winds and ensure their gear is well-secured. Bringing extra stakes and using rocks for additional anchoring, as mentioned in the review, might be a prudent strategy.
To summarize the key aspects of Basin Creek Campground for those looking for "camping near me" in the Stanley, Idaho area:
- Free Camping: Enjoy a no-cost camping experience.
- Secluded Location: Situated away from busier campgrounds, offering more privacy.
- Creek-Side Sites: Some sites are located directly next to Basin Creek, providing a scenic and tranquil setting.
- Basic Amenities: Includes a picnic table and metal fire ring at each of the few sites, and an outhouse near some sites.
- Natural Beauty: Located in a potentially very pretty area.
However, it is equally important to be aware of the potential challenges and lack of amenities:
- No Camp Host: No on-site management or assistance.
- No Firewood Provided: Campers must bring their own.
- No Hookups or Potable Water: Completely self-sufficient camping is required.
- Past Environmental Events: History of flooding and fire in the area necessitates caution.
- Limited Number of Sites: With only around six sites, availability may be limited, especially during peak season.
- Potentially Hazardous Access Road: Basin Creek Road is described as potentially scary at night due to its cliffside location.
- Possible Strong Winds: Be prepared for windy conditions.
Given that Basin Creek Campground is a free and unmanaged site, there is likely no formal reservation system or promotional information available. If you are considering camping here, it would be wise to have a backup plan in case all sites are occupied or if the conditions are unfavorable. Arriving early might increase your chances of securing a site.
In conclusion, Basin Creek Campground offers a unique opportunity for "camping near me" in the Stanley, Idaho area for those who prefer a more rustic and self-reliant experience. The free access and creek-side setting are appealing, but campers must be fully prepared for the lack of amenities and potential environmental challenges, including wind and the history of flooding and fire. Exercise caution while accessing the campground and be sure to practice responsible camping ethics. This campground is best suited for experienced campers who are comfortable with primitive conditions and value solitude and natural beauty.

Basin Creek Campground Reviews
away from much busier larger forest service campgrounds near redfish lake and along 75, as well as the "dirt lots" of dispersed camping... it's an old forest service campground that is no longer... which means no camp host, firewood, and FREE. in the past, the area has flooded (2006?) and burned (more recently), so proceed with caution. there's only a few sites (6?) but you'll get a picnic table, metal fire ring, and an outhouse near sites 3-6. basin creek road is a bit scary in the dark because it runs along a cliff above a river, but doesn't seem to need 4x4 or high clearance (aug 2020). i loved sleeping next to the creek and having a lot more privacy and beauty!

Feb 03, 2025 · ThingsN’ StuffNice spot. The campsites are far enough from the highway to be very quiet. Hunters and others often camp here. Vault toilet still accessible (November 2021). Picnic table and fire ring at each site.
