Bayhorse Recreation Site Introduce
Welcome to Bayhorse Recreation Site, a campground nestled in the vicinity of Challis, Idaho. For local users searching for "camping near me," Bayhorse Recreation Site offers a unique camping experience with its proximity to a historic mining town and the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Located approximately 15 minutes from Challis, this campground provides a quieter and more secluded camping option.
The environment surrounding Bayhorse Recreation Site is characterized by the rugged landscapes of central Idaho. Situated near Challis, campers can expect to be immersed in a region known for its mountains, forests, and access to outdoor recreation. The reviews highlight the quiet atmosphere of the campground, particularly during the early December visit of one reviewer. This suggests that Bayhorse Recreation Site offers a peaceful retreat, especially during the off-season. However, it's important to note that the level of tranquility might vary depending on the time of year and the number of campers.
One of the unique features of Bayhorse Recreation Site is its close proximity to the historic Bayhorse mining town. According to a review, this old mining town is a "really cool" attraction, although visitors cannot enter any of the buildings. Exploring the remnants of this historic site offers a glimpse into the region's past and adds a distinctive element to the camping experience. Imagine spending your day hiking around the old town, taking photographs, and learning about the area's mining history before returning to the peace of your campsite.
In addition to the historic site, Bayhorse Lake is located about 4 miles up the road from the campground. This provides campers with the opportunity to enjoy lake activities, although specific details about the lake (such as fishing, boating, or swimming access) are not provided in the reviews. The presence of a nearby lake enhances the recreational potential of Bayhorse Recreation Site, offering an alternative to exploring the historic town.
The services and features of Bayhorse Recreation Site appear to be somewhat basic, catering to a more rustic camping experience. One reviewer mentioned "valued toilets," indicating the presence of restroom facilities. The pricing structure varies depending on the season, with a cost of $5 per night during the fall and winter and $10 per night during the spring and summer. This seasonal pricing is a common practice for many campgrounds and reflects the varying demand and potentially different levels of service offered during peak and off-peak times.
Another notable feature mentioned in the reviews is the presence of a "camp host." A camp host typically resides within the campground and can provide assistance to campers, answer questions, and help maintain the site. The presence of a camp host can contribute to a more organized and secure camping environment.
One significant piece of information for potential campers is the reported lack of cell phone service. According to a reviewer, both AT&T and Verizon users experienced no service at the campground. This is an important consideration for those who rely on their mobile phones for communication or navigation. Campers should be prepared for limited or no connectivity during their stay at Bayhorse Recreation Site.
The number of campsites is estimated to be around 12, as mentioned by one reviewer. This suggests that Bayhorse Recreation Site is a relatively small campground, which could contribute to its quiet atmosphere. However, it also implies that availability might be limited, especially during the peak spring and summer seasons. It would be advisable to contact the campground directly at (208) 879-6200 or +1 208-879-6200 to inquire about reservations or availability, particularly if you are planning a trip during the busier months.
Since no specific promotional information is included in the provided data, it is not possible to detail any special offers or discounts. When contacting Bayhorse Recreation Site, it would be beneficial to inquire about any potential promotions for extended stays or group bookings, especially if you are planning a longer camping trip. Additionally, you could ask about any amenities that might be included in the camping fee, such as access to water sources (if any), fire pits, or picnic tables at the individual campsites.
In conclusion, Bayhorse Recreation Site near Challis, Idaho, offers a unique "camping near me" experience characterized by its quiet environment, proximity to the historic Bayhorse mining town, and the nearby Bayhorse Lake. The campground provides basic amenities, including toilets and a camp host, with seasonal pricing of $5 per night in the fall/winter and $10 per night in the spring/summer. Campers should be aware of the reported lack of cell phone service. With an estimated 12 campsites, it is recommended to contact the campground directly for availability and any further information. Bayhorse Recreation Site appears to be a suitable option for those seeking a more rustic and historically interesting camping experience in central Idaho.

Bayhorse Recreation Site Reviews
Valued toilets5$ fall/ winter10$ spring/summerThere's about 12 spots I believe, located about 15 min from town. I have At&t and my fiance has Verizon and we both didn't have service.Very quiet, but then again we came in early Dec.
Dec 13, 2023 · Andrew “Drew” DuzanReally cool old mining town. Can't go inside any of the buildings. Has nice campground with camp host. Also Bayhorse Lake is up.the road about 4 miles.
Sep 27, 2020 · julia Hopkins maxwellA great roadside place to camp for the night. We have a 30 foot 5th wheel, and there was plenty of room for us.As the traffic was light, road noise never bothered us. There is a camp host on site. Water is available with garbage dumpsters too.
Sep 03, 2023 · Russell TannerThere aren't many spaces for big trailers or motorhomes, but there are a few. The camp hosts were very nice and cordial, but didn't have much of a grasp on the campground itself. The sprinklers came on 3 times a day even during the weekend, which made any outdoor activities a challenge. Other than that, it's a nice campground.
Jul 02, 2020 · Jason McGiffinClean, convenient and easy access. No campground host~illness. Irrigation canal blocks river access except for the tiny boat launch. Convenient to Bayhorse Lake and Ghost Town. Don't try to take your camper up Bayhorse rd. #SKETCHY.😜
