Big Hollow Recreation Area Introduce
For local users in Sperry, Iowa, and the surrounding areas searching for "camping near me," Big Hollow Recreation Area, located at 152nd Ave, Sperry, IA 52650, USA, offers a diverse range of outdoor experiences, from traditional camping to a unique off-grid cabin stay. Situated amidst a natural landscape featuring a lake and ponds, Big Hollow provides opportunities for various recreational activities and a chance to connect with nature. User reviews highlight both the scenic beauty of the area and the distinct characteristics of its accommodations.
One of the prominent features of Big Hollow Recreation Area is its lake, which has garnered attention for its unique visual appeal. One visitor noted that the "death trees emerging from the water" provide excellent photographic opportunities, suggesting a somewhat dramatic and interesting landscape. While the lake is appreciated for its beauty, it's also mentioned that kayaking can be "a little challenging," advising caution to those planning to explore it by boat. This indicates that while the lake is accessible for water activities, it might have certain conditions or features that require paddlers to be mindful of their surroundings.
For those seeking an alternative to traditional camping, Big Hollow Recreation Area offers an "off grid cabin" experience. One reviewer who stayed in the cabin over Memorial Day weekend described it as a "wonderful experience." This cabin seems to be a popular option, particularly when traditional camping spots are fully booked, offering a more secluded and private retreat. A significant advantage highlighted by the reviewer is the cabin's distance from the main campground, providing a true "cabin in the woods experience with no one around." The absence of park activity noise further enhances the sense of tranquility and isolation, making it ideal for those seeking a peaceful escape.
The reviewer also provided several helpful notes for future guests of the off-grid cabin, offering valuable insights into what to expect and what to bring. Regarding sleeping arrangements, it's recommended to "bring a thin air mattress or foam" as the mattresses provided are described as hard. The beds are of regular height, so bringing a very thick air mattress might result in a sleeping surface that is too high off the ground. This practical advice is crucial for ensuring a comfortable night's sleep.
In terms of lighting, the cabin is equipped with solar lights in every room, which are operated by light switches. This provides a convenient and sustainable source of illumination within the off-grid setting, enhancing the comfort and functionality of the cabin. However, for water needs, guests are advised to "bring gallon jugs of water for dishes, etc." While there is a cistern with a hand pump that collects rainwater from the gutters, the water was noted to be "a little brown," suggesting it might not be suitable for drinking or cooking without proper purification. This reinforces the importance of bringing an adequate supply of clean water.
A significant positive aspect of the off-grid cabin is the provision of a "porta potty" which was reported to be clean. This essential amenity adds a level of convenience to the otherwise rustic experience. Additionally, firewood is available for sale near the porta potty at a reasonable price of two good-sized sticks for a dollar, with the option to find kindling in the surrounding woods for starting fires.
Security and privacy are also notable features of the cabin area. There is a gate that guests can close to restrict vehicle access, enhancing the sense of seclusion. The reviewer mentioned only one instance of a vehicle accidentally driving back, which quickly turned around, indicating that the gate effectively limits traffic. Ample parking space is available for a few vehicles and even a boat, making it convenient for those bringing watercraft or traveling with multiple vehicles.
A unique perk of renting the off-grid cabin is the inclusion of a canoe, paddles, and life jackets. These are located at the end of a trail near the cabin, providing an opportunity for guests to explore the waterways. However, it's noted that the canoe appeared "dirty," so guests might want to be prepared to clean it before use. The presence of "2 ponds on either side of the cabin" also offers additional recreational opportunities, with the reviewer mentioning catching fish in both of them, making it an appealing spot for anglers.
Given the natural setting, it's advisable to "bring gnat / mosquito repellent" to ensure comfort, especially during warmer months. The overall recommendation from the reviewer is to "relax and have a great time," suggesting that despite the off-grid nature and the need for some preparation, the experience is ultimately enjoyable and worthwhile.
For local users searching for "camping near me" who are drawn to the idea of a secluded cabin experience or who enjoy fishing and potentially kayaking, Big Hollow Recreation Area offers a unique option with its off-grid cabin. The scenic lake, while potentially challenging for kayaking, provides photographic opportunities and a natural backdrop. The presence of fishing ponds adds another dimension for outdoor enthusiasts. While traditional camping spots are also available, the detailed review of the off-grid cabin provides a comprehensive understanding of what to expect from that particular accommodation.
Local users considering a stay at Big Hollow Recreation Area, particularly the off-grid cabin, should take note of the recommendations regarding bringing their own water and potentially a more comfortable sleeping surface. The availability of solar lights, a clean porta potty, and firewood for sale are convenient amenities that enhance the off-grid experience. The inclusion of a canoe and the presence of fishing ponds further add to the recreational opportunities available.
To attract more local users, Big Hollow Recreation Area could further highlight the unique aspects of both its traditional camping and the off-grid cabin experience on local platforms. Showcasing the scenic beauty of the lake and ponds, the opportunities for fishing and boating, and the secluded nature of the off-grid cabin could appeal to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. Any specific details about traditional camping sites, such as hookups or shared amenities, would also be valuable information for those preferring a more conventional camping experience. Promotional offers for local residents or off-season rates could also incentivize visits.
In conclusion, Big Hollow Recreation Area near Sperry, Iowa, offers a blend of natural beauty and unique accommodation options for those searching for "camping near me." The lake provides scenic views and challenging kayaking, while the off-grid cabin offers a secluded retreat with access to fishing ponds and a complimentary canoe. Local users should be prepared for the off-grid nature of the cabin, including the need to bring their own water and potentially additional bedding, but can look forward to a tranquil and nature-filled experience.

I like this lake, the death trees emerging from the water give me a good opportunity to take good pictures, a little challenging for kayaking, just be careful.
Mar 27, 2025 · Torres EstolanoWe stayed in the off grid cabin over Memorial Day weekend. What a wonderful experience it was! We chose the off grid cabin because there weren't any camping spots open but wanted to stay here. One of the things I love most is that this cabin was far away from the campground so it truly was like having a cabin in the woods experience with no one around. We couldn't hear any park activity... at all! Some notes:*Bring a thin air mattress or foam. The mattresses provided are hard. They are regular height beds so if you bring a really thick air mattress, you'd be up really high off the ground.*The solar lights work in every room and have light switches*Bring gallon jugs of water for dishes, etc. There is a cistern with hand pump but the water that is gathered is rainwater from the gutters and was a little brown.*Porta potty is provided and clean-yay!* There is firewood for sale right near the Porta potty. 2 sticks for a dollar and they were good size! You can find kindling in the woods.* There is a gate that you can close to keep cars out. There was only one person that accidentally drove back and they quickly turned around.* There is enough parking room for a few vehicles and a boat.* The rental of the cabin comes with a Canoe, paddles & life jackets. It looked dirty so be prepared to do a little cleaning if you want to use it. It is parked at the end of a trail near the cabin.*There are 2 ponds on either side of the cabin-we caught fish in both of them.*Bring gnat / mosquito repellent*Relax and have a great time
