Based on customer reviews, Big Meadows Campground provides essential services and some convenient amenities to enhance the camping experience. The facilities are described as "basic but you have what you need," suggesting a focus on providing the necessities for a comfortable stay in a natural setting. Clean restrooms are available throughout the campground, although one reviewer noted that the men's facilities in at least one location had only a single urinal and toilet. It's important to note that there are "several around," indicating that while individual restroom buildings might be limited, overall access to these facilities is adequate.
One significant service mentioned is the availability of showers, although these operate on a pay-per-use system, requiring $5 for 10 minutes, payable in quarters. This is a point to consider for campers who prefer regular showers. The campground also boasts a camp store, offering the convenience of purchasing essential supplies, snacks, and potentially souvenirs. Additionally, the presence of a restaurant and a gas station within the campground area is a notable feature, providing options for meals and refueling without having to leave the park. Each campsite, regardless of type, includes a picnic table and a fire pit, essential for outdoor meals and enjoying campfires (subject to park regulations). Water is accessible via community spigots located throughout the campground, and a slop sink is available at the restroom areas for washing dishes, promoting responsible campsite maintenance.
For groups camping together, Big Meadows offers group sites. These sites are equipped with two parking pads, each capable of fitting two cars (at best), two picnic tables, and a fire pit. One reviewer noted that the group site they used was located right next to the restroom, which could be convenient for some but potentially less private for others. A unique characteristic of the group site mentioned was the significant amount of land separating the two parking pads, which might be a consideration for groups wanting to set up camp in closer proximity.

However, it does highlight the critical need for advance booking, especially through the recreation.gov app or website. The campground is noted to sell out even in the off-season (mid-November), indicating its popularity and the importance of planning ahead. The booking window includes both sites that can be booked further in advance and some that become available for booking just four days prior to arrival. Local users considering a visit, even for a spontaneous weekend trip within the 'camping near me' category, should check the recreation.gov platform immediately for availability.

Big Meadows Campground Reviews
Camped 2 nights while exploring the national park. Lots of great hiking. Several waterfalls. Campsites are basic but you have what you need. The only negative for me was the showers. $5 for 10 minutes. You have to feed in quarters one by one. Bathrooms only have 1 urinal and 1 toilet for the men, but there are several around. Had a fun stay.
Apr 01, 2025 · Bobby HartmanGreat campground with clean facilities, a camp store, a restaurant and a gas station. We car camped here for a night on a group site with 2 other couples. The group sites have 2 pads that fit 2 cars each (at best), 2 picnic tables and a fire pit. It was right next to the restroom. The only downside was the group site had a lot of land in-between the two parking pads. Most single sites have a pad and then there is overflow parking. There is also 'tent only' walk to sites available. Each site also has a picnic table and fire pit. There is a community spigot for water and at the restroom area is a slop sink to do dishes. There is a mixture of book ahead sites and book 4 days ahead. Use the rec.gov app or website to figure out. This place sells out even mid November so plan ahead.
Nov 10, 2024 · Kristin KosmidesSome of the nicest camping I’ve ever done. We absolutely loved this campground and the surrounding area and saw tons of deer! We camped on the site that bordered the edge of the Appalachian Trail which felt neat to be so close. This campground also has hiking right from the campground so you don’t have to drive. There is a very small camp store within walking distance that is open 10-8 that has ice, firewood and some essentials. The laundry is there too along with the $5 showers for 10 minutes. I really don’t understand the reason to charge for showers, it just seems like a hassle as there is an attendant running around removing quarters from the showers just to return them back into the change machine. One of the two change machines was broken and the other working one didn’t work that well. It just seems easier to charge a couple more dollars a night for camping, have free showers, and do away with the quarter dilemma.
Aug 28, 2024 · prohomevideosAt the risk of making more people come here and fighting for more camp spots, I am writing this review for the good of all.Big Meadows Campground is absolutely amazing. They have many campsites and are nestled at the top of the mountains, elevation approximately 3500ft.It sits at the top of the Shenendoah national park in Virginia. You will have to pay an entrance fee to get in to the park and an additional fee for the campground spot od your choice, unless you are a veteran, military, or disabled.
Oct 10, 2024 · Logan JacksonBeautiful campground. It was very busy when we went but the area is beautiful and it was totally worth it. Deer are not afraid of people at all and come right up to your camper.Showers and bathrooms were clean, laundry was only $1 for the washer and 25¢ per 7 minutes.
