Big Woods Lake Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking a "camping near me" experience in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Big Woods Lake Campground, located at 1501 E Lake St, offers a lakeside setting with a range of amenities and a generally relaxed atmosphere. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground provides a mix of positive features that make it an enjoyable camping destination, although there are a few points potential visitors should be aware of before booking.
The environment at Big Woods Lake Campground is described as relaxed and quiet by one reviewer, contributing to an enjoyable camping trip that ranked among their top three. A significant natural feature is the lake, which is conveniently located just a "stone's throw" from the campgrounds, offering opportunities for fishing and simply relaxing by the water. For those who enjoy walking and exploring, the campground boasts "beautiful trails," suggesting scenic routes for nature enthusiasts. Additionally, a unique feature particularly appealing to families with young children is the "story walk," where pages of a book are spread out along a trail, creating an engaging and interactive activity.
In terms of services and features, Big Woods Lake Campground offers a mix of reservation and first-come, first-served campsites, providing flexibility for different planning styles. Campers can appreciate the availability of hot showers with personal stalls, offering comfort and privacy. For families with young children, the playground's location right beside the bathrooms is noted as both a convenience and a potential challenge (presumably due to proximity and supervision). Essential camping amenities such as a dump station and firewood sold on site add to the convenience of staying at Big Woods Lake Campground.
While many aspects of the campground are praised, some drawbacks have been mentioned. One reviewer noted that the front of the park can feel overcrowded. Additionally, there are "limited water facets" for those without full hook-up sites, which might be a consideration for campers needing easy access to water. Shade appears to be somewhat limited throughout the park. Finally, the distance to the bathrooms can be long if your campsite is not located in the front of the park.
A critical piece of information highlighted by one reviewer is the campground's cancellation policy. They shared a negative experience where, upon needing to cancel a reservation made well in advance due to unforeseen travel changes, they were informed that no refunds are given at all. While rescheduling might be an option depending on availability, a straight cancellation results in the loss of the full payment. This reviewer, who was traveling through and for whom rescheduling was not feasible, found this policy unacceptable, suggesting that at least deducting a processing fee would be more reasonable. This "CAMPERS BEWARE!" advisory regarding the no-refund policy is a significant point for potential local users to consider, especially if there's any uncertainty about travel dates.
Despite these cons, the overall sentiment from one reviewer was that Big Woods Lake Campground is a "nice park" and that they would recommend it and camp there again. This suggests that the positive aspects, such as the relaxed atmosphere, lake access, trails, and amenities, outweigh the negatives for many visitors.
There is no specific promotional information provided in the reviews. The appeal of Big Woods Lake Campground for local users seems to be centered on its natural attractions (the lake and trails), family-friendly features (playground and story walk), and essential camping amenities. However, the strict no-refund cancellation policy is a crucial factor that potential campers should be fully aware of before making a reservation.
In summary, Big Woods Lake Campground in Cedar Falls, IA, offers a local camping experience characterized by:

Sep 23, 2024 · SierraCAMPERS BEWARE! We camped here two years ago and this is a very nice campground but be certain of your dates when scheduling because if you should need to cancel you will not receive any Refund AT ALL!! Unbelievable! While traveling this spring our schedule and route had to change and so I called to cancel, at least a month in advance, and was told they could reschedule the reservation (if there is availability) but if you cancel you get no refund! Tha might work out if you are local folks but we would be traveling thru so rescheduling is not an option. I would understand deducting a processing fee - but this is unacceptable!
Apr 10, 2025 · Lori BiblerPretty awesome new campground. It has reversal sites that allow groups to face their doors towards each other. They also have many pull through sites. They are well graveled and level. Some sites back up to the lake. They also have a brand new bathhouse and some cute cabins to rent.
Oct 28, 2018 · Wendy BurkNice little campground in Cedar Falls. Fairly open area as trees are all immature. Small playground for kids near the bathrooms. Short walk to the lake.
Jul 19, 2021 · Suzie RothDirty bath houses not cleaned daily. Recycled asphalt at campsites instead of gravel is super messy. Mostly locals camping here and not overly friendly. No shade. Grass was all dead.
