Teal Spring Campground

NF-200, Pomeroy, WA 99347, USA

4.0
Very nice campsites, some with a fantastic view into the Tucannon drainage. However we had to hike in to see them. We were planning to camp there in the 14 ft Teardrop camper we were pulling behind our F-150 pickup. However the first steep part of the camp entrance off NFR 40 was a mess. Steep, deeply rutted - couldn’t trust that we wouldn’t break an axle so we found something down the road. It’s a shame because the rest is the entrance road (which we walked) is great and the campsites are lovely. Some roadway maintenance entering the campground is badly needed, so beware. Teal Spring Campground Introduce

Nestled along NF-200 near Pomeroy, Washington, Teal Spring Campground presents a compelling option for those exploring the 'camping near me' category and seeking a beautiful and remote outdoor experience in the Blue Mountains region. Customer reviews highlight the campground's scenic campsites, some boasting fantastic views into the Tucannon drainage, and its appeal for hiking enthusiasts. However, potential visitors should be aware of reported access issues concerning the initial part of the entrance road, which has been described as steep and deeply rutted, potentially problematic for certain types of vehicles.

Environment: Stunning Vistas and Remote Natural Beauty

Teal Spring Campground's location along National Forest Road (NF) 200 near Pomeroy, Washington, places it within the rugged and scenic terrain of the Blue Mountains, likely within or near the Umatilla National Forest. A significant environmental feature, as noted by a reviewer, is the "fantastic view into the Tucannon drainage." The Tucannon River and its surrounding drainage area are known for their picturesque landscapes, including deep canyons, forested slopes, and diverse wildlife. The remoteness of the campground is also emphasized, suggesting a tranquil and secluded setting away from more developed areas. Another reviewer mentions the impact of a fire on the wildlife in the area, indicating a landscape that is in a state of recovery, with wildlife slowly returning. Additionally, the potential for strong winds on the bluff tops suggests an exposed location with expansive views. The overall environment of Teal Spring Campground appears to be one of dramatic natural beauty, offering stunning vistas and a sense of being immersed in a remote wilderness.

Services and Amenities: Likely Primitive with a Focus on Nature

Based on the reviews, Teal Spring Campground seems to offer a more primitive camping experience. The mention of hiking into some of the campsites suggests that not all sites may be directly accessible by vehicle, implying a focus on a more backcountry or walk-in style of camping for those particular spots. While specific amenities like restrooms, water sources, or fire pits are not detailed in the reviews, the remote nature of the campground often correlates with basic facilities. Campers should likely expect vault toilets at best and may need to be self-sufficient for water and other necessities. The emphasis on hiking and the natural beauty of the area suggests that the primary appeal lies in the environment and recreational opportunities rather than extensive campground amenities. The fact that some campsites offer fantastic views indicates a deliberate placement to maximize the scenic experience for visitors. Given the reported access issues, it's crucial for potential campers to assess their vehicle's suitability for the terrain and come prepared for a potentially rustic camping experience.

Features and Highlights: Scenic Views, Hiking, and Remote Tranquility

The standout features of Teal Spring Campground include the "fantastic view into the Tucannon drainage" from some campsites, the beautiful and remote setting, and the opportunities for hiking in the surrounding area. The scenic vistas are a major draw, promising memorable sunrises, sunsets, and panoramic views of the rugged landscape. The remoteness of the campground offers a sense of peace and solitude, appealing to those seeking an escape from more crowded destinations. The proximity to hiking trails allows visitors to explore the recovering natural environment and enjoy the beauty of the Blue Mountains up close. The potential for strong winds on the bluff tops adds an element of natural dynamism to the location, requiring campers to be prepared for varying weather conditions. The fact that some of these prime view campsites require a hike in further enhances the sense of adventure and reward for those willing to make the effort. Teal Spring Campground seems particularly well-suited for adventurous campers and hikers who prioritize scenic beauty and a remote, natural experience.

However, the significant caveat regarding the "steep, deeply rutted" first part of the camp entrance road off NFR 40 cannot be overlooked. This poses a potential access issue, particularly for vehicles with lower clearance or those towing trailers, as highlighted by the reviewer with the Teardrop camper. While the rest of the entrance road (beyond the initial problematic section) is described as "great," this initial obstacle could deter some visitors. Potential campers should exercise caution and possibly scout the entrance road beforehand if they have concerns about their vehicle's capability.
