The entrance has the permits right at the front. Its a manless stand where you fill out the permit place it in the window and put the money in the associated envelope of your permit. The campsites are pretty spacious. There is a dumpster. A water fountain and onsite porterpotties. Great trees for hammocks. The water isn't swimmable but located within 10 mins are water access points. Campsite 4 is downhill and we got flooded and had to divert water but it was warm the rain didn't stop us from having a blast - Debbie Klein

Black Creek State Forest Campground Introduce

Are you a local resident searching for 'camping near me' within the natural beauty of Michigan's state forests? Black Creek State Forest Campground, located at W Saginaw Rd & N W River Rd, Sanford, MI 48657, USA, offers a camping experience with spacious sites and basic amenities. For inquiries, you can contact them at (989) 539-3021 or their mobile number, +1 989-539-3021. Based on recent customer feedback, it's important for potential visitors to be aware of both the positive aspects and potential drawbacks of this campground to make an informed decision.

Upon arrival at Black Creek State Forest Campground, the entrance features a self-service permit station. According to one reviewer, permits are readily available at the front, operating on an honor system. Campers fill out the permit, display it in their vehicle window, and place the appropriate payment in the provided envelope associated with their permit. This manless system emphasizes self-reliance and convenience upon entry.

One of the frequently mentioned positives of Black Creek State Forest Campground is the spaciousness of the individual campsites. This feature allows campers more room to set up their tents or park their recreational vehicles comfortably, offering a greater sense of privacy and freedom compared to more tightly packed campgrounds. The presence of "great trees for hammocks" is another environmental perk, appealing to those who enjoy relaxing and lounging outdoors in a shaded setting.

In terms of basic amenities, the campground provides essential facilities for a rustic camping experience. A dumpster is available for waste disposal, helping campers maintain clean campsites and contribute to the overall cleanliness of the area. A water fountain is also on-site, providing access to drinking water. For restroom facilities, the campground utilizes porter-potties (portable toilets). While functional, it's important for campers to be aware that these are the type of restroom facilities available.

Regarding water access, one reviewer noted that while the water directly adjacent to the campground is not swimmable, there are water access points located within a 10-minute drive. This suggests that while the campground itself might not offer immediate swimming opportunities, those looking to swim or engage in other water activities can find suitable locations nearby. It would be beneficial to inquire about the specific locations and types of water access available within this short driving distance.

However, not all feedback regarding Black Creek State Forest Campground has been positive. One concerning review from September 2019 paints a starkly different picture of the campground environment. This reviewer described it as a "party park," citing the presence of numerous beer bottles and caps scattered across various campsites. Furthermore, they reported significant noise issues from a group at campsite 6, who were allegedly loud until 3 am with amplified music, disturbing the peace of other campers.

This negative review also raises concerns about the management and oversight of the campground. The reviewer claims that Wilson State Park is supposed to manage Black Creek State Forest Campground but alleges that their involvement is limited to collecting fees from the self-service registration box without providing adequate on-site management or addressing issues such as excessive noise and littering. This lack of visible management could be a significant drawback for campers seeking a more controlled and peaceful environment.

Accessibility is another point of concern raised in the negative review. The outhouse toilet seats were described as being "very low to the floor," making them difficult to use for individuals with mobility issues, particularly those with bad knees. Additionally, the reviewer mentioned difficulty in locating the boat launch and described the banks along Black Creek as "very steep to walk down," potentially posing challenges for those wishing to access the creek for fishing or other activities.

The discrepancy between the positive and negative reviews highlights the importance of considering various perspectives when evaluating Black Creek State Forest Campground. While some visitors have appreciated the spacious campsites and basic amenities, others have experienced issues with noise, litter, and accessibility. It's possible that the campground experience can vary depending on the time of visit and the behavior of other campers.

For local users considering Black Creek State Forest Campground for their 'camping near me' needs, it would be prudent to inquire about current conditions, management presence, and any specific rules or regulations in place to ensure a more positive experience. Contacting the provided phone numbers might offer insights into recent changes or improvements at the campground.

Given that Black Creek State Forest Campground is part of the state forest system, it likely offers opportunities for other outdoor activities such as hiking and exploring the surrounding natural areas. However, the steep banks along Black Creek, as mentioned in one review, might limit easy access to the creek itself for some activities. It would be advisable to ask about marked trails and other recreational opportunities within the state forest that are easily accessible from the campground.

In conclusion, Black Creek State Forest Campground in Sanford, MI, offers spacious campsites and basic amenities within a state forest setting. While some visitors have enjoyed the natural environment and the availability of hammock-friendly trees, potential campers should be aware of reported issues such as noise disturbances, littering, and accessibility challenges related to the restroom facilities and creek access. For local users searching for 'camping near me,' gathering more current information directly from the campground management or recent reviews might be necessary to determine if it aligns with their expectations for a peaceful and well-managed outdoor experience.
