Branch Brook Campground Introduce
For local residents exploring 'camping near me' in Connecticut, Branch Brook Campground, situated at 435 Watertown Rd, Thomaston, CT 06787, USA, presents a camping option with a mix of positive attributes and areas for consideration, based on recent customer feedback. You can contact them for inquiries at (860) 283-8144 or +1 860-283-8144.
One of the frequently mentioned positive aspects of Branch Brook Campground is its convenient location for travelers. Situated approximately 8 miles from Interstate 84, it is noted as a "good place for an over night stay for long travels." This accessibility makes it a potentially attractive option for those passing through the area or seeking a quick and easy camping stop near major transportation routes.
The environment of Branch Brook Campground is described as "quiet" and "shady," which can be appealing to campers seeking a peaceful and cool retreat, especially during warmer months. The presence of shade suggests a more comfortable camping experience, particularly for those in tents or RVs without extensive cooling systems. The quiet atmosphere, while generally positive, was occasionally disrupted by specific incidents reported by reviewers.
In terms of services and features, Branch Brook Campground offers full hook-up sites (FHU), as mentioned by one reviewer who stayed at site 34. This is a significant convenience for RV campers, providing access to water, electricity, and sewer connections at their campsite. The availability of Wi-Fi service was also highlighted as "notably superior to that experienced at other campgrounds," which can be a valuable amenity for those who need to stay connected for work or personal reasons while camping.
However, the reviews also raise several important points of consideration for potential visitors. One recurring issue is the management and maintenance of the campground. Multiple reviewers mentioned the office being "closed most of the time" and an "unattended" office with "entirely virtual" check-in procedures. This lack of on-site staff presence could be a concern for campers needing immediate assistance or having questions upon arrival. The absence of "security or gated access" was also noted by one reviewer.
Concerns were also raised regarding the behavior of a "maintenance or ground keeper." One reviewer detailed an interaction where this individual was perceived as confrontational regarding leash rules for dogs and later complained about parking. Such interactions could detract from the overall camping experience and suggest a need for improved customer service training for staff.
Another significant issue reported was the apparent allowance of fireworks on the property. One reviewer expressed surprise and concern that fireworks were permitted to the extent that they disturbed their dogs. The allowance of fireworks in a campground can be disruptive to other campers seeking peace and quiet and may also pose safety risks.
Cleanliness appears to be inconsistent. While one reviewer found the bathrooms clean upon arrival, they noted that they were "never cleaned for 3 days" despite the campground being full. This lack of regular cleaning, particularly in shared facilities like bathrooms, can be a major drawback for campers prioritizing hygiene and comfort.
Site-specific issues were also reported. One camper experienced their assigned site being too small and requiring an "unconventional parking arrangement." They also mentioned the constant presence of children and parents traversing their site, despite polite requests to stop, and the parking of bicycles near their camper. Additionally, noise from dirt bikes using a nearby path across the stream was a significant disturbance throughout their stay. The presence of "broken glass" on their site and "dog feces" throughout the campground further contributed to a negative experience.
Despite these concerns, some positive aspects were noted. One reviewer appreciated the offer of relocation when their initial site was too small and acknowledged the exceptional pleasantness and helpfulness of a staff member named Jodie. Another positive mention was the presence of "friendly neighbors" in the seasonal sites area. The campground is also described as "easy to maneuver around," which is a benefit for RVs and larger vehicles.
It's important for local users searching for 'camping near me' to weigh these contrasting experiences. While Branch Brook Campground offers a convenient location near I-84, potentially quiet and shady sites, and full hook-ups, the reported issues regarding inconsistent office hours, maintenance staff interactions, allowance of fireworks, cleanliness of facilities, and site-specific disturbances should be carefully considered. The campground appears to cater significantly to seasonal residents, which might influence the experience of short-term visitors.
Prospective campers may want to inquire specifically about site sizes and layouts, pet policies (including leash enforcement and fireworks), bathroom cleaning schedules, and the availability of on-site staff before making a reservation. Reading more recent reviews on various platforms could also provide a broader perspective on the current state of the campground and help local users determine if Branch Brook Campground meets their specific needs and expectations for a 'camping near me' experience.
In conclusion, Branch Brook Campground offers a potentially convenient and quiet camping option in Thomaston, CT, particularly for overnight stays near I-84. However, based on recent reviews, there are significant concerns regarding management presence, maintenance practices, cleanliness, and site-specific issues that local users should be aware of when considering this campground for their 'camping near me' needs. It is recommended to seek further information and recent feedback before making a decision.

Branch Brook Campground Reviews
We stayed at this campground for eight days. Upon arrival, we encountered an issue with our assigned site being too small to accommodate our camper, necessitating an unconventional parking arrangement that left minimal space on the site (see photos). Jodie, a representative from the campground, offered to relocate us; however, by the time we spoke, we had already completed the unhooking process. Nonetheless, an alternative option was provided, which was appreciated. Jodie consistently demonstrated exceptional pleasantness and helpfulness. The Wi-Fi service was notably superior to that experienced at other campgrounds. The rationale behind our three-star rating stems from our experiences during our stay. Having specifically requested an end-cap site for privacy, as we work from our RV, we were dismayed by the constant presence of children and parents traversing our site, often parking bicycles adjacent to our bumper (see photos). Despite polite requests to refrain from doing so, these individuals persisted. Furthermore, the proximity of a path across the stream, which was frequently utilized by dirt bikes, generated considerable noise all week. Our site was also marred by the presence of broken glass. All through the campground there was dog feces. Notably, the office was consistently unattended, with check-in procedures being entirely virtual, and an absence of security or gated access. The campground primarily accommodates seasonal sites, although we did encounter friendly neighbors adjacent to our location. Overall, our experience at this campground was underwhelming. We stayed at site 34 which was a FHU. This park is 8 miles from 84 and would be a good place for an over night stay for long travels.
Apr 20, 2025 · The Bates Motel RVCampground is in idea location. Issue we had were the office was closed most of the time. Second, maintenance or ground keeper carried himself like he owed the campground. First day he told me to move our stuff cause he needed to mow the area which wasn’t really the problem, my issue was getting on me about my dog being on a leash. I was literally grabbing one out of my car to put her on it. He kept telling me campground strict and again said to put my dog on a leash. I explained I was in the process.Seems he gave an ok for his friends to shoot off fireworks to where I had to put my dogs inside, seeing they get very nervous with fireworks. Was surprised this is allowed at this campground.Bathrooms were clean when we arrived but never cleaned for 3 days. Men’s or women’s.Last I had parked near the building while my wife was using the facility and stayed far left as possible for any other campers who might be registering. Again maintenance kid complained to my wife on how I parked. Owners might want to have a talk with the kid before other complaints.Positive note, campground is quiet, shady and easy to maneuver around.
Aug 14, 2024 · Hal FellowsWe stayed here one night, mid-week, in early June, so there were many nicer sites vacant. This is what the campground judged adequate to put us on??? Beware… if you choose to reserve here, you may want to specify not to be given a site in the trashy part of the campground… we were surrounded by these “beauties”… There was no logical reason not to give us a better, decent site. Very disappointing, and we will definitely not return here.
Jun 05, 2024 · Marie-Claude Thellend**Late post**Campground: Branch Brook CampgroundState ParkCity, State: Thomaston, ConnecticutCheck-in: April 11, 2023Check-out: April 12, 2023Site Number: 7Our Set Up: Class C Motorhome (32 feet) plus TOADWe Liked: It was the only campground open in Connecticut, anywhere near Hartford given the time of year. It had opened a week or two earlier. Easy access to I-84.We Didn't Care For: It wasn't a big deal for our overnight but there seem to be quite a few seasonal RVs and they weren't in the best shape. Made sections of the campground look dumpy. Bathroom had seen better days.Overall Assessment: We never saw anyone working at the office but saw several maintenance workers preparing sites for the upcoming season. Pool and common room were closed (seasonal) but looked decent. Camp roads a wee bit narrow which made backing into spot a little precarious. Would definitely consider for an overnight in the future.
Jun 17, 2023 · Matthew Falls (lobstahtrap)Very nice campground. I was passing through on way to Boston. I travel in a 34 Super C diesel powered motorhome. I paid $65 for a back in site. Sites are nice and big with some sort of hard gravel that they put down. A nice touch is the picnic table on a wooden deck. 50 amp power was good as was water and sewer hook up. Pickle ball and a creek running through it. People were fishing. I did see a tent set up by the creek. They have some transient sites that I stayed in and liked. Easy to find from route 84. You need to follow directions carefully. The only tip I have is that be careful when you get to the check in point. They have a metal stop sign anchored in a bucket of cement. Their sign says pull out of the way and the metal stop sign is position such that I almost scraped the side of our motorhome. They could move sign to left a foot or so. Also, the speed bumps they have in the way in are pretty big.
