Buck Meadow Campground

Mc Kinley Grove Rd, Shaver Lake, CA 93664, USA

4.0
Gorgeous ice cold crystal clear water flowing through this campground. We sometimes stop in to swim and refresh early before the campground is used. There is small rainbow trout and brown trout that are hard to catch and wild. The campground itself is somewhat small but very nice. There is some slick granite upstream so if you have little ones something to be aware of. Also this water is stinging cold. Nearby dinkey creek is much better suited for swimming. But this water will wake you up especially very early in the year. - Fishing Paradise California

Buck Meadow Campground provides essential services for a rustic and primitive camping experience. It is a relatively small campground, featuring 10 individual campsites. These sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning that reservations are not accepted. This allows for spontaneous trips, but also means that during popular times, such as weekends in peak season, arriving early is highly recommended to secure a spot. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill, perfect for outdoor cooking and enjoying an evening by the fire. For restroom facilities, vault toilets are available on-site, providing a basic but functional amenity. It is crucial for campers to note that potable water is NOT available at Buck Meadow Campground. Visitors must bring all their own drinking water for the duration of their stay or be prepared to filter/treat water from the nearby creeks. The campground is operated by a concessionaire, Vista Recreation, ensuring some level of management and maintenance. The maximum stay allowed is 14 days, with a maximum group size of 6 per site and a maximum vehicle length of 35 feet, accommodating both tents and smaller RVs/trailers.

The presence of "slick granite upstream" is noted as something to be aware of, especially if camping with young children, indicating potential hazards but also unique geological formations for exploration. The campground's quiet nature is a key feature, making it ideal for those seeking tranquility. Beyond the immediate campground, the surrounding area offers extensive opportunities for hiking, exploring the forest, and accessing other nearby recreational areas. The McKinley Grove Road itself, while providing access, is part of the experience, winding through beautiful mountain scenery.
