Wishon Village RV Park Introduce

For individuals and families searching for "Camping Near Me" and desiring a comfortable yet adventurous escape into the High Sierra, Wishon Village RV Park stands out as a premier destination. Located at 66500 McKinley Grove Rd, Shaver Lake, CA 93664, USA, this family-owned and operated campground offers a blend of modern conveniences and unparalleled access to the breathtaking natural beauty of the Sierra National Forest. Operating generally from May through October, Wishon Village RV Park provides a welcoming environment for all types of campers, from RV enthusiasts to tent campers and those seeking furnished rental units.

Environment and Setting

Wishon Village RV Park is situated at an elevation of approximately 6,600 to 6,700 feet, offering a refreshing mountain climate and stunning surroundings. The park is perfectly positioned between two magnificent high-elevation lakes: Wishon Reservoir and Courtright Reservoir, both renowned for their pristine waters and excellent fishing. The journey to Wishon Village itself is part of the adventure, as it's located along the winding McKinley Grove Road, amidst a landscape sculpted by ancient glaciers, providing a scenic drive that gradually unveils the grandeur of the High Sierra. The campground itself is often described as "beautiful, quiet, blissful, clean," reflecting a well-maintained and serene atmosphere.

The layout of the park is thoughtfully designed, with 96 spacious RV sites that are roughly 40 feet wide, accommodating large RVs up to 60 feet in length. These sites are typically gravel-based, well-kept, and groomed before each guest's arrival, ensuring a pleasant setup. Campers can choose between sites with ample sun or plenty of shade, some even terraced with stone wall dividers, offering a sense of privacy. For tent campers, there are 26 dedicated tent sites, many featuring a 12x16 foot tent platform, providing a level and comfortable base for pitching tents. The natural environment is rich with dense stands of conifers like pine and cedar, along with manzanita and oak, contributing to the shady ambiance and a feeling of seclusion between sites. Despite its popularity, Wishon Village maintains a quieter atmosphere than some of the more bustling areas around Shaver Lake.

Services and Features

Wishon Village RV Park prides itself on offering a comprehensive range of services and features that enhance the camping experience, differentiating it from more primitive campgrounds. For RV campers, all 96 RV sites come with full hookups, including water, sewage, and electricity (30/50 amp), ensuring maximum comfort and convenience. Each RV and tent site also includes a picnic table and a fire pit, essential for outdoor dining and evening campfires. The RV sites are also described as "dish-satellite friendly," allowing guests to access their favorite shows.

Beyond the individual sites, the park boasts well-maintained communal facilities. The restrooms, with hot showers (coin-operated for campers with reservations), and flushing toilets, consistently receive high praise from guests, with one reviewer noting how "Eddy does a wonderful job on the bathrooms. They sparkle ✨️." A coin-operated laundry facility is also available, providing essential amenities for longer stays. The presence of a General Store on-site is a significant convenience, offering basic groceries, camping supplies, fishing supplies, gifts, souvenirs, books, and both hot and cold beverages. It also serves as a central gathering place, with staff readily available to assist with reservations, boat rentals, and fishing license sales. Propane is also available for purchase.

While the remote mountain location means there is no traditional mobile phone service, Wishon Village does offer Wi-Fi throughout the RV park area and near the store for an additional fee. However, it's important to note that this Wi-Fi is basic, intended for emailing, texting, and internet scrolling, and is explicitly not strong enough for streaming services. Guests are encouraged to enable Wi-Fi calling on their devices before arrival if they need to make phone calls. The park is also pet-friendly, welcoming furry companions, and even features two dog runs for their convenience, making it a truly inclusive destination for families.

For those without an RV or tent, Wishon Village offers three rental units, including a Cozy Cabin and two types of trailers (30' Coleman Trailer and Sprinter Trailer). These units are fully stocked with basic pots and pans, utensils, dishes, a fridge and freezer, microwave, coffee pot, toaster, and stove top. They also include a restroom, couches, TV and DVD player, and a table, offering a comfortable "camping without the haul" experience. Guests renting these units need only bring their linens, bedding, and food. Pets and smoking are not allowed in the rental units.

Recreation and Activities

Wishon Village RV Park is an excellent hub for a wide array of outdoor recreation activities, perfectly blending relaxation with adventure. Its strategic location between Courtright and Wishon Reservoirs makes it an ideal base for fishing and boating. Wishon Reservoir has a 15 mph speed limit, providing a peaceful environment for kayaking, canoeing, and non-motorized boating, while Courtright Reservoir also allows boating with a 10 mph speed limit. Both reservoirs are popular for fishing, with opportunities to catch rainbow trout, brown trout, and other species. Pontoon boats are available for rent directly at Wishon Village, ranging from 4-person to 8-person capacities, offering a convenient way to explore the lakes. The park also sells fishing and hunting licenses, making it a one-stop shop for outdoor enthusiasts.

Beyond the water, the surrounding Sierra National Forest provides endless opportunities for land-based activities. Hiking is a major draw, with numerous trailheads accessible from the area, including paths that lead into the John Muir Wilderness and the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness. Rock climbing is another popular activity, with sites available at Courtright Reservoir. For those interested in off-highway vehicle (OHV) adventures, the renowned Dusy-Ershim trail is accessible from Courtright. The nearby McKinley Grove Giant Sequoias offer a unique opportunity to marvel at some of the world's largest trees, with picnic tables and paved walking paths for visitors. Within the campground itself, there are a variety of daily activities for all ages, including basketball, horseshoes, and a Rec Room equipped with ping pong, pool, shuffleboard, arcade games, and board games. Scheduled events often include ice cream socials, potlucks, arts and crafts, and live entertainment at an outdoor stage. The annual 4th of July campground parade is a highlight, with campers encouraged to decorate themselves, their pets, or their bikes.
