Sawmill Flat Campground

Shaver Lake, CA 93664, USA

4.0
Decent group camping spot. Big trees, primitive, seasonably dry, with roaming bears, pesky flies & sometimes hunters. There's plenty of places underneath the trees to pitch a huge tent, park, etc. There are spots to set up a volleyball court, badminton, horseshoes, cornhole, etc. There is a small seasonal creek nearby. It is well off the main road & you may be tempted to give up before you get there. It lies in a setting of pine, cedar, manzanita, and Bear Clover. No reservations needed, no fees, no water, no crowds. The campground has vault toilets and each site has a table and fire ring. Turn off before Clyde's outfit pack station. The 3.1 mile access road off McKinley Grove Rd is dirt and gravel. Water and garbage service is not provided. If you bring it in, you pack it out. Don't forget bug spray, hammock, and your dart board. - john whitacre

Sawmill Flat Campground Introduce

For outdoor enthusiasts craving a truly authentic and secluded wilderness experience, Sawmill Flat Campground in the Sierra National Forest near Shaver Lake, California, stands out as a prime destination under the "Camping Near Me" category. This is not a manicured resort; it's a place where you can genuinely "rough it," embrace nature, and escape the crowds. Often praised by those who frequent it as a "great hunting camp" and an "awesome place to camp," Sawmill Flat delivers an unfiltered connection with the high country, with no fees, no water, and no phone service – a true definition of off-grid camping.

Environment and Natural Features

Sawmill Flat Campground is nestled in a serene forest environment characterized by an abundance of large trees, including pine, cedar, manzanita, and bear clover. This lush canopy provides ample shade, making it comfortable even during warmer months, though the area is known to be "seasonably dry." The elevation of the campground is approximately 6,000 feet, which contributes to cooler temperatures than the valleys, though exact figures aren't provided, typical Sierra weather patterns suggest warm days and cool nights. The natural setting is rugged and pristine, with a small seasonal creek nearby adding to the tranquil ambiance.

Being deep within the Sierra National Forest, wildlife is an integral part of the experience. Reviewers explicitly mention "roaming bears," emphasizing the importance of diligent bear-aware practices. Other wilderness inhabitants, such as deer, are also common in the broader forest area. The secluded nature of the campground, well off the main road, contributes to its quietude, making it significantly "quieter than Shaver Lake" according to one review. This remoteness also means clear night skies, perfect for stargazing away from light pollution. The weather can change rapidly, with sunny days potentially giving way to thunderstorms within hours, a characteristic of mountain environments that campers should be prepared for.

Services and Facilities

Sawmill Flat Campground offers a primitive camping experience, appealing to those who prefer self-sufficiency. It consists of approximately 15 sites, primarily designed for tent camping, though there's "plenty of places underneath the trees to pitch a huge tent, park, etc." Each site is equipped with essential amenities, including a picnic table and a fire ring for campfires, allowing for cooking and enjoying the classic camping ambiance. The campground also features vault toilets (pit toilets) for sanitation. While one review noted that the "bathroom was locked" during their visit, these facilities are generally available, albeit primitive.

A crucial aspect of Sawmill Flat is the complete absence of running water and garbage service. Campers are explicitly reminded that "Water and garbage service is not provided. If you bring it in, you pack it out." This "Leave No Trace" ethos is fundamental to maintaining the pristine condition of the campground. There are no electrical hookups or showers, reinforcing the "roughing it" aspect. The lack of modern conveniences, including phone service and internet, is seen as a feature by many, allowing for a complete disconnect from the digital world and a focus on nature.

The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning no reservations are needed. This accessibility is a draw for spontaneous adventurers, though it also means securing a spot, especially a prime one, requires arriving early during busy periods. Notably, there are no fees to camp at Sawmill Flat, making it a highly economical choice for extended stays in the wilderness.

Features and Activities

The defining feature of Sawmill Flat Campground is its raw, untouched nature and relative seclusion. The 3.1-mile access road off McKinley Grove Road is dirt and gravel, leading to a feeling of true escape. Reviewers note that one "may be tempted to give up before you get there" due to the unmarked turns, but the reward is a tranquil environment. This challenging access helps "keep a lot of the riff raff out," contributing to the quiet and undisturbed atmosphere.

Despite its primitive nature, Sawmill Flat offers ample opportunities for recreation:

  • Hunting: It's a popular hunting camp, particularly during the appropriate seasons, appealing to those who combine their love for the outdoors with hunting activities.
  • Traditional Camp Games: The spacious sites provide room for setting up recreational activities like "volleyball court, badminton, horseshoes, cornhole, etc.," making it ideal for group fun.
  • Hiking: The surrounding Sierra National Forest offers countless miles of trails for exploration. While specific trails are not detailed for Sawmill Flat, the general area near Shaver Lake and Dinkey Creek provides extensive hiking opportunities.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The active presence of bears and other forest animals makes for exciting wildlife viewing opportunities, emphasizing the need for respectful cohabitation.
  • Relaxation: For those seeking pure relaxation, the quiet environment, ample shade, and seasonal creek provide a perfect setting for hammocking, reading, or simply enjoying the sounds of nature.
  • Stargazing: The remote location ensures minimal light pollution, offering incredible views of the night sky, perfect for stargazing and astrophotography.

The campground's rustic charm is further enhanced by the absence of patrol, giving campers a greater sense of freedom and responsibility for their own experience, as one reviewer cryptically noted, "There is no patrol of any kind, chose your weapon." This implies a self-reliant and mature camping community.

Promotional Information and Booking

Sawmill Flat Campground is the ideal destination for seasoned campers and groups who are well-prepared for a primitive experience and value solitude over amenities. The repeated emphasis on "no fees, no water, no crowds" highlights its unique selling proposition. While the phone numbers provided (541) 338-7869 and +1 541-338-7869 are general contact numbers for the High Sierra Ranger District within the Sierra National Forest, they can be used for general inquiries about forest conditions, fire restrictions, and road statuses, which are crucial for planning a trip to such a remote location.

As a first-come, first-served campground with no fees, securing a spot, especially a desirable one, relies on timing. Arriving early in the week or during off-peak seasons is recommended. Campers must come fully prepared with all necessary supplies, including ample potable water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, as well as provisions for trash removal. Essential items to bring include "bug spray, hammock, and your dart board," as suggested by a past visitor. Bear-resistant food containers are highly advisable, even if not explicitly provided at each site, given the presence of roaming bears.

Navigational guidance is key for first-time visitors; remember to "Turn off before Clyde's outfit pack station" and be aware that "the road in isn't super well marked." However, the reward for navigating the dirt and gravel access road is a truly secluded and authentic camping experience in the heart of the Sierra National Forest. For those who embrace the challenges of true backcountry camping, Sawmill Flat Campground offers an unforgettable escape, making it a top choice within the "Camping Near Me" category for the adventurous spirit.
