Buckhorn Campground Introduce
For local adventurers seeking 'camping near me' in the scenic region of Buckhorn, Kentucky, Buckhorn Campground, located at 804 Buckhorn Dam Rd, offers a well-equipped base for various travel needs. Situated near Buckhorn Lake, this campground provides convenient access to the natural beauty of the area. However, it's essential for potential visitors to have a clear understanding of its offerings and limitations, as highlighted by recent customer reviews.
The environment surrounding Buckhorn Campground is characterized by its proximity to Buckhorn Lake and the broader natural landscape of eastern Kentucky. While the campground itself may not offer extensive on-site recreational activities, its location provides access to the lake and the surrounding area for potential exploration. The region is known for its wooded hills, winding roads, and opportunities for outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, and hiking, though these are primarily located outside the immediate campground premises. The reviews mention scenic beauty and a peaceful atmosphere, suggesting a pleasant natural setting for a camping stay.
In terms of services and features, Buckhorn Campground appears to prioritize providing well-equipped campsites. Reviews mention "nice sites with power and water," indicating that it caters to both RV and potentially tent campers who appreciate these conveniences. The presence of a "night light" at the sites suggests attention to safety and ease of navigation after dark. The availability of a "clean bathroom" and a "good shower" are also noted, which are essential amenities for a comfortable camping experience. Additionally, the campground offers practical services such as "ice" for sale and a "basketball court" for some on-site recreation.
A key feature of Buckhorn Campground, as noted by one reviewer, is its suitability as a "great spot for the route 76 TransAm tour." This suggests that the campground is conveniently located along or near this popular cycling route, making it an attractive stopover for cyclists undertaking the TransAm Trail. The reasonable prices mentioned in this context further enhance its appeal for budget-conscious travelers. The online reservation system is also a notable feature, providing a convenient way for travelers to secure their spot, especially if no one is immediately available at the check-in window.
However, it is crucial to address a significant point raised in one of the reviews regarding the lack of on-site activities for families. The reviewer explicitly states, "There is really not anything to do at the campground for families," and cautions against being misled by a "pool photo on Google" which is actually located "40 minutes away on the other side of Buckhorn Lake." This is a critical piece of information for local users planning a family getaway and highlights a potential discrepancy between online representations and the actual offerings of the campground itself. While the reviewer enjoyed their stay as a solo parent with one child on a quick trip, they explicitly state that bringing more children would have led to disappointment due to the lack of activities within the campground boundaries.
The review also provides some helpful tips regarding campsite selection. It suggests that sites on the "right side" tend to get more sun in the morning and are closer to the pond, while the "left side" offers better shade. This kind of specific advice from fellow campers can be invaluable for local users planning their stay and choosing the most suitable site based on their preferences for sun exposure and proximity to certain areas of the campground.
Given the information available, there is no explicit promotional information for Buckhorn Campground. However, its reasonable prices and suitability for TransAm Trail cyclists could be considered implicit advantages for those specific user groups. For local families seeking a campground with extensive on-site recreational activities, Buckhorn Campground may not be the ideal choice based on the customer feedback. However, for individuals, couples, or small groups looking for well-equipped sites, clean facilities, and a convenient location near Buckhorn Lake and as a stop along the TransAm Trail, it presents a viable option.
Local users interested in staying at Buckhorn Campground are encouraged to contact them directly at (606) 398-7220 or +1 606-398-7220 to inquire about site availability, specific amenities, and to clarify any questions regarding on-site activities and the pool situation. It would be prudent to ask for the most accurate and up-to-date information to ensure that the campground meets their expectations for their 'camping near me' experience. While Buckhorn Campground offers certain advantages like well-equipped sites and a convenient location, understanding its limitations regarding family activities is crucial for a satisfying stay.
In conclusion, Buckhorn Campground offers well-equipped campsites and clean facilities in a location near Buckhorn Lake, making it a suitable option for individual travelers, couples, and those cycling the TransAm Trail. However, potential visitors, especially families with children, should be aware that on-site recreational activities are limited, and the pool shown in some online photos is not located at the campground itself. Local users seeking a functional and conveniently located campground in the Buckhorn area should consider Buckhorn Campground, keeping in mind the insights from recent customer reviews to ensure it aligns with their specific needs and expectations.

Buckhorn Campground Reviews
The sites are well equipped, but small. There is really not anything to do at the campground for families. Do not be fooled by the pool photo on Google. There is no pool. That pool in the photo is 40 minutes away on the other side of Buckhorn Lake. We did enjoy our stay, as it was just my daughter and I on a quick getaway. If I had brought the rest of my kids I would have been disappointed at the lack of activities that are within the campground.
Jan 10, 2025 · K DGreat spot for the route 76 TransAm tour. Prices are reasonable. No one was at the window at the time and so I made a reservation online. Nice sites with power and water. Night light. Bathroom was clean and shower was good. Sun shines on the right side, before the night, closer to the pond. Better to get the left side, for shade. They have ice and a basketball court. I’d visit again.
Jul 11, 2024 · DroppinIt’s a beautiful campground but, whew, the winding roads getting here will give you gray hair.Bathrooms are very clean. AT&T service was good
Jul 21, 2024 · Cori ThorntonBeautifully quiet and small campground. An excellent COAE Site located at bottom of Buckhorn Lake COAE Dam. Many LEVEL gravel sites with water and electric, site 12 is a poured pad that accepts my 37 foot 5th wheel. Would easily accept up to 45 feet. 50 Amp refurbished electric hook up with water. KENTUCKY RIVER 20 feet off back of site with a beach behind sites 14 &15... Playground and shelters located at main entry and horseshoe pits and dog area on middle of loop. Highly recommend all the COAE grounds I've visited. If ever in western Kentucky visit Canal campground by COAE.
