Bushay Recreation Area Introduce
For outdoor enthusiasts and travelers actively searching for "Camping Near Me" in the beautiful region of Ukiah, CA, **Bushay Recreation Area** stands out as a highly recommended and well-regarded campground. Located on Marina Dr, Ukiah, CA 95482, USA, and reachable by phone at (707) 467-4200 or +1 707-467-4200, Bushay Recreation Area offers a compelling blend of convenient access, thoughtful amenities, and a pleasant natural environment, making it a strong contender for your next camping adventure.
The **environment** at Bushay Recreation Area is consistently praised for its natural beauty and upkeep. Despite the lake sometimes being at lower levels, the grounds are described as "clean" and capable of being "so much more lush and beautiful" after rain, suggesting a vibrant natural setting. Campers have noted the "cushion of the grassy campsites," which offers a more comfortable alternative to hard dirt, and the abundance of "dead grass served as decent tinder" for fires, highlighting useful natural resources. The campground is rich in wildlife, with campers enjoying "the sound of frogs and turkeys" and seeing "tons of fascinating birds," including the impressive sight of a "bald eagle." This rich biodiversity adds significantly to the outdoor experience. While some trees have been removed due to disease by the Army Corps, the overall impression remains positive, contributing to a well-maintained and enjoyable natural setting.
Bushay Recreation Area truly shines in its provision of **services and features**, many of which enhance the camping experience without additional cost. A standout feature is the availability of **free firewood all around the campgrounds**, a significant convenience that saves campers both time and money. Furthermore, the provision of **free showers, with no need for quarters**, is a highly appreciated amenity, making it easier for campers to freshen up after outdoor activities. The **bathrooms are consistently described as "Super clean and well lit,"** a crucial factor for comfort and hygiene in any campground. Beyond basic facilities, the campsites themselves offer a "Standard campsite setup" including a "bench + fire ring," but also a thoughtful addition: a "pole with a hook," which is "perfect for hanging lights, a tarp, drying dishware, etc." This small but practical detail significantly improves campsite utility. The presence of a **Ranger patrolling often** is a major benefit, especially for solo campers or smaller groups, as it contributes significantly to a sense of safety and security. One review from "2 young women" specifically highlighted how this frequent patrolling "helped us feel a little safer," underscoring its importance. The camp is also noted for having friendly and helpful fellow campers, fostering a positive community atmosphere.
When it comes to **promotional information and key features**, Bushay Recreation Area is easily accessible, located "right off the 101," which makes it convenient for travelers from various directions, including those from Santa Cruz and north of San Francisco. A crucial detail for prospective campers is that **advanced reservation is required**, which helps manage occupancy and ensures a spot upon arrival, especially during peak seasons. The campground's ability to offer a "nice getaway" even for last-minute planners, despite reservations sometimes being hard to find elsewhere, speaks to its availability and appeal. The positive experiences of campers, including a friend and I who "stayed Sat-Mon" and found the park "pretty much empty by Sun (workweek + predicted rain)," indicate that it can offer a peaceful retreat. A testament to the helpfulness of the staff is the anecdote where an employee reached out to a camper who accidentally left chairs behind, demonstrating a level of care and customer service that goes above and beyond expectations. This thoughtful gesture reinforces the positive impression of the management and staff. Overall, despite initial hesitations by some due to "mixed reviews" or seemingly "so many open sites," the firsthand accounts consistently praise Bushay Recreation Area for its cleanliness, amenities, and overall positive environment, making it a highly recommended destination for anyone looking for "Camping Near Me" in the Ukiah area, offering a genuinely enjoyable outdoor experience that would make many want to "head back" for another visit.

Bushay Recreation Area Reviews
- Easy to access, right off the 101- Free firewood all around the campgrounds- Free showers (no need for quarters)- Super clean and well lit bathrooms- Ranger patrolling often (we are 2 young women, this helped us feel a little safer)- Standard campsite setup (bench + fire ring) but also included a pole with a hook - perfect for hanging lights, a tarp, drying dishware, etc.- Heads up! Advanced reservation is requiredSince my friend and I decided to plan a last minute camping trip, reservations were hard to find anywhere. I'm from Santa Cruz and hardly ever make it north of San Francisco so Bushay Campground sounded like a nice getaway. However I was a little hesitant since there were so many open sites here and mixed reviews but it really was just too perfect. We stayed Sat-Mon and it was pretty much empty by Sun (workweek + predicted rain). Everyone else staying the weekend was very friendly and helpful. The rain only made the campsite so much more lush and beautiful and luckily we were prepared for the rain. The sound of frogs and turkeys added a nice touch and we also saw tons of fascinating birds (including a bald eagle!!). I'm used to camping on hard dirt so the cushion of the grassy campsites was really nice, plus the dead grass served as decent tinder. Also, I accidentally left my camping chairs behind :( and an employee reached out to me to let me know! I wish it wasn't a 3+ hour drive for me because I would love to already head back lol.
Apr 01, 2022 · Maddy SalazarWe stayed for 4 nights, although the lake is still really low, we still had a great time! The grounds were clean, but would have been nice to have had a string trimmer. 😁Restrooms are well kept. They Army Corp have been quite busy, and many trees have been removed due to disease. It was very nice!
Apr 02, 2022 · iRacer99Nice spot near the lake one thing tho there's absolutely no where to fish they advertise it but you can't get to the shore from anywhere.
May 30, 2018 · Alex SacchettiWarm and sunny. Took the kayaks out for 4 hours. The road to the camp ground was still flooded so it was interesting to be floating where wed normally be driving.
Jun 16, 2019 · Kimberly EatonNice campground with convenient showers (free) and toilets. Very friendly camp manager. Firewood to be found all around the campsite. We were there during 3 weekdays and were almost the only ones there. Very peaceful and quiet. Very hot too, so make sure to pick a spot at the lakeside to get a bit of a breeze. And consider doing something off site (in your airconditioned car) during the hottest hours of the day.
