Red Mountain Campground Introduce
For those actively searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Ukiah, California area who are seeking a more adventurous and secluded experience, Red Mountain Campground presents a unique and rewarding option. While not a typical resort-style campground, it offers a truly natural and often solitary escape. The campground is located near Ukiah, CA 95482, USA. For inquiries, you can attempt to contact them via phone at (707) 439-5109 or +1 707-439-5109, though the remote nature of such campgrounds often means limited direct contact and reliance on online information or self-service.
The environment of Red Mountain Campground is consistently described as "gorgeous" and "beautiful." It provides a "beautiful and peaceful" setting, making it an ideal retreat for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. The natural surroundings contribute significantly to its appeal, offering a sense of tranquility and remoteness. However, campers should be aware of a significant environmental factor: the potential for "absurdly strong winds." One review notes that a tent's fly "nearly blew off despite being secured," requiring a quick midnight fix. This suggests that campers should come prepared with robust tent stakes and be mindful of tent placement and securing their gear to withstand potentially high winds.
A defining characteristic of Red Mountain Campground is its challenging access. The road leading to the site is described as a "pothole ridden dirt road" and a "rough hike up." While one reviewer managed to reach the site in a "Toyota Corolla," noting it "wasn't easy and the pothole ridden dirt road definitely scraped the bottom of the car a couple times, but it was absolutely doable!", another emphasizes that for RVs, particularly larger ones, it's a significant undertaking. Towing a "24ft toy hauler RV up to the camp ground" was achieved, but the reviewer explicitly states, "I wouldn't say I'd recommend it. But, if you have a good truck with some good tires it can be done. Just know your capabilities cause it is a rough hike up." This strong recommendation underscores that a capable vehicle, such as a truck with good tires, and potentially 4WD or high clearance, is highly advisable, if not essential, for a comfortable and safe journey, especially for larger rigs.
In terms of services and features, it can be inferred from the nature of the reviews that Red Mountain Campground is a primitive or dispersed camping area, likely managed by a national forest or similar public land agency. This typically means minimal to no developed amenities. There is no mention of water, restrooms (beyond what might be a vault toilet, though not confirmed), or hookups for RVs. Campers should assume it is a "dry camping" experience, meaning they need to be fully self-sufficient, bringing all their own water, and handling waste responsibly. The beauty and solitude of the site are the primary features, rather than extensive services.
A significant promotional aspect of Red Mountain Campground, especially for a specific demographic, is its direct access to off-road trails. One reviewer enthusiastically states, "Best off all you can just ride out of camp to tons of trails to ride with a great variety of difficulties." This makes it an ideal destination for enthusiasts of ATVs, dirt bikes, or other Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) who are looking for a base camp from which to explore a network of trails. This feature strongly differentiates it from many other campgrounds and appeals to adventure seekers.
The reviews also highlight the often secluded nature of the campground. One camper noted being there for two nights and "only one other couple was there too," indicating that it's a place where solitude is often found. This makes it particularly attractive for those looking to escape crowds and enjoy peace and quiet in a natural setting. The "beautiful and peaceful" atmosphere, once reached, seems to outweigh the challenges of the access road for those who are prepared.
In conclusion, for those searching "Camping Near Me" in the Ukiah area with an adventurous spirit, Red Mountain Campground offers a truly "beautiful" and "peaceful" natural escape. Its primary features are its stunning remote environment and direct access to a variety of OHV trails. However, it is crucial to understand that access is challenging via a rough, pothole-ridden dirt road that is best navigated with a capable vehicle, especially for RVs. Campers should be prepared for strong winds and assume it is a primitive, dry camping experience with very limited amenities. This campground is best suited for experienced campers who are self-sufficient, have appropriate vehicles, and are looking to enjoy solitude, natural beauty, and off-road recreational opportunities rather than a full-service camping experience.

Red Mountain Campground Reviews
My friends and I made it up to this site in a Toyota Corolla. It wasn't easy and the pothole ridden dirt road definitely scraped the bottom of the car a couple times, but it was absolutely doable! The site is gorgeous, just be wary of some absurdly strong winds. Our tent's fly nearly blew off despite being secured, but nothing a quick 1am fix couldn't solve.

But, if you have a good truck with some good tires it can be done. Just know your capabilities cause it is a rough hike up. Once you get up there it's very beautiful and peaceful. Jul 20, 2021 · Kenneth RoehrsReally nice spot to stay if you aren't scared of skinny, steep roads. The top has fire rings, bathrooms, and trash bins. Great views
Nov 16, 2022 · Peter JonesMultiple campsites each with a fire pit and picnic tables, many with BBQs as well... multiple newer restrooms. NO WATER at all!!Some smaller trash cans, but not dumpsters, so please pack out what does not fit in the can! People are leaving a LOT of trash all over lately!Cell service all over the campground... and easy access to 4x4 and OHV trails.
