Butte Lake Campground Introduce
Are you searching for "camping near me" in Northern California, looking for a location that combines natural beauty with opportunities for exploration? Consider Butte Lake Campground, situated near Old Station, CA 96071, USA. Based on available customer reviews, this campground offers a compelling experience, particularly for those interested in hiking and scenic landscapes, despite a few noted inconveniences. Let's delve into what makes Butte Lake Campground a potential destination for your next camping trip.
The location of Butte Lake Campground is frequently praised in the reviews. It's described as a "Great location," and one reviewer mentions that "Butte Lake is just a short walk away," while "the Cinder Cone trailhead is within walking distance." This proximity to natural attractions is a significant draw, suggesting that campers here have easy access to both a lake environment and a notable geological feature, the Cinder Cone volcano, which one reviewer found "incredible" and "Well worth the effort!" This immediate access to outdoor activities enhances the appeal for those looking to immerse themselves in nature and explore the local terrain.
In terms of amenities, one reviewer noted that the campgrounds are "Pretty descent," and specifically mentioned that "Each spot has a fire ring, garage bins with locking cover, and a picnic table." These are standard and valuable features for any campsite, providing the essentials for cooking, food storage, and outdoor dining. Additionally, the reviewer pointed out the availability of "many dry toilets and flushing toilets throughout the site," which is a notable convenience, as many more rustic campgrounds often only offer vault toilets. The presence of both types suggests that Butte Lake Campground aims to provide a degree of comfort for its visitors.
However, the reviews also consistently mention a significant drawback: the unpaved road leading to the campground. One reviewer states, "Wish the road in was paved but the area is awesome! Be prepared for the gravel road. It's not too rough but clouds of dust. The campground is next to the road so whenever a vehicle comes in..." Another echoes this, calling it "the only downside for this site" and describing it as a "6 miles dirty road," estimating a travel time of "20 to 30 minutes depending on how fast you drive," and humorously adding, "you will most definitely need a car wash after the trip 😉." This clearly indicates that while the destination is worthwhile, the journey in involves a dusty, unpaved road that campers should be prepared for. The proximity of the campground to this road also means that dust from passing vehicles might be a recurring factor at the campsites themselves.
Despite the dusty access road, the overall sentiment from the reviews is positive, particularly regarding the location and the access it provides to natural wonders like Butte Lake and Cinder Cone. The availability of fire rings, bear-safe storage bins, picnic tables, and both dry and flushing toilets adds to the functionality and comfort of the campground.
For local users searching for "camping near me" who are drawn to hiking, lake activities, and unique geological sites, Butte Lake Campground presents an attractive option. The opportunity to hike the Cinder Cone and explore Butte Lake directly from the campground is a significant advantage. The provided amenities ensure a basic level of comfort during your stay.
Potential campers should be aware and prepared for the 6-mile unpaved road leading to the campground. This might involve driving at a slower pace and being mindful of dust. It would also be advisable to consider the type of vehicle being used, although the reviews suggest the road is "not too rough." Bringing supplies to help manage dust inside your vehicle and at your campsite might also be prudent.
There isn't specific promotional information in the reviews, but the enthusiastic descriptions of the location, particularly the access to Cinder Cone and Butte Lake, serve as a strong implicit recommendation. The fact that visitors feel the destination is "Well worth the effort!" despite the dusty road suggests a high level of satisfaction with the overall experience.
In summary, Butte Lake Campground near Old Station, CA, offers a "Great location" with easy access to Butte Lake and the incredible Cinder Cone. The campsites are equipped with fire rings, bear-safe storage, and picnic tables, and the campground provides both dry and flushing toilets. The primary drawback appears to be the 6-mile unpaved and dusty access road. For local users seeking "camping near me" with a focus on natural beauty and hiking opportunities, and who are prepared for a dusty drive, Butte Lake Campground is likely a worthwhile destination. Jul 17, 2023 · HarryOne of my most favorite campsites. Huge spaces but know there is no local water or sewage hook ups. Stars are incredibly. Walks nearby amazing.
Sep 08, 2024 · Dominic JohnNice campground with decently sized campsites and shade. Very conveniently located near the lake, which many people were enjoying sitting by and swimming in. The lake is located right by the Cinder Cone trail, which is must do if you are a capable hiker (the home up is tough).Campground was full, but people were respectful. Would visit again.
Jul 24, 2022 · Jeff DClean bathrooms, lots of lake access, not crowded. Each site has a fire ring, bear box, and picnic table. Bathrooms are toilets and sinks only. Also a dish washing station, garbage and recycling. Quick walk to Butte Lake access, there is a public access area with bathrooms, picnic tables, and some fire rings. But you can keep walking back to more private/nature areas. Camp is just off the trail to Cinder Cone, and there are many other trails nearby.
