Cain Hollow Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" with picturesque surroundings, Cain Hollow Campground, located in Salamanca, NY, presents an opportunity for a mountain camping experience. Situated within a "gorgeous park," likely Allegany State Park given the location, Cain Hollow offers campers a chance to immerse themselves in beautiful scenery, which one visitor noted would be even more spectacular in late September or early October, suggesting vibrant fall foliage.
The environment of Cain Hollow Campground is characterized by its mountainous terrain. As one reviewer pointed out, "hey you are on a mountain," which explains a significant feature of the campground: it is situated "on a slope." This elevation provides for potentially stunning views and a unique camping atmosphere. The proximity to Quaker Lake, described as "magnificent," further enhances the appeal of the location for those who enjoy water-related activities or simply scenic lakeside views.
However, the sloping terrain also presents some considerations for campers. Multiple reviews mention that the "sites are not very level." This could be a factor when setting up tents or parking recreational vehicles, potentially requiring extra effort to find a suitable and stable position. Additionally, the campsites are described as "narrow," which might affect the amount of usable space for larger setups or for maneuvering within the site.
Another aspect to be mindful of is the presence of a "ditch" when backing a rig into a spot. One reviewer advised caution regarding this, indicating it could pose a minor challenge during setup. Similarly, another camper at Site 77 noted a "small drainage 'ditch' going right thru the middle of the site," which they felt could be a tripping hazard at night, suggesting uneven terrain within individual campsites as well.
The facilities at Cain Hollow Campground are described as "very nice." One reviewer mentioned a "big climb to the washroom/shower facility if you are at the opposite end of the building," which is understandable given the mountain setting and the potential layout of the campground. This implies that while the facilities are well-maintained, their accessibility might vary depending on the location of your specific campsite within the campground. It's something to consider if mobility is a concern.
Regarding the individual campsites, one review of Site 77 provided a detailed observation. Half of the site was noted to have a "gravel pad perfect for a camper," while the other half was "very uneven," making it less suitable for tents. This suggests that the quality and suitability for different types of camping setups might vary from site to site within Cain Hollow. The presence of the drainage ditch through Site 77 also contributed to a less-than-perfect rating for that particular spot.
Despite these observations about the terrain and individual campsites, the overall sentiment towards Cain Hollow Campground and the surrounding park is positive. One visitor stated, "It is still a great spot even if you are just passing through," highlighting its appeal even for short stays. The "gorgeous park" and "very nice" facilities contribute to a pleasant camping experience, and the proximity to the "magnificent" Quaker Lake is a significant draw.
For local users looking for "camping near me" that offers beautiful mountain scenery and access to Quaker Lake, Cain Hollow Campground is a viable option. You can expect "very nice" facilities. However, it's important to be aware that the campground is on a slope, which results in some campsites being not very level and potentially narrow. There might also be ditches to navigate on some sites. If you are at a site far from the washroom/shower building, be prepared for a climb. Despite these considerations, the overall beauty of the park and campground seems to make it a worthwhile destination, with one visitor explicitly stating they "will be coming back!"
In conclusion, Cain Hollow Campground offers a scenic camping experience in a mountainous setting near Salamanca, NY, with access to the beautiful Quaker Lake. The facilities are well-regarded. However, potential campers should be prepared for uneven and potentially narrow campsites, and the possibility of ditches on some sites. The location on a slope might also mean a significant climb to the facilities from certain areas. Despite these points, the gorgeous surroundings and overall positive experiences reported by visitors make Cain Hollow a compelling choice for those seeking a "camping near me" adventure in a naturally beautiful environment.

Cain Hollow Campground Reviews
Here at the beginning of Sept 2023, was fairly quiet. Surrounded by beautiful scenery (would be even better late Sept. or early Oct.). Sites are not very level and narrow, be careful of the ditch when backing your rig into your spot. Big climb to the washroom/shower facility if you are at the opposite end of the building, but hey you are on a mountain. It is still a great spot even if you are just passing through, the Quaker Lake near by is magnificent too.
Sep 23, 2023 · frank irvGorgeous park and campground. Facilities are very nice. Cain Hollow is on a slope, so be mindful of that. We had Site 77 and it was ok. The only reason it’s not 5 stars is the campsite itself could use a little work. Half of the site is at gravel pad perfect for a camper, and the other half is very uneven so not much space for a tent or two. There is also a small drainage “ditch” going right thru the middle of the site. My concern is walking around at night, there are a lot of places to twist your ankle etc. so be careful. This is not a major concern or complaint, just an observation for Site 77. The rest of the park is excellent and we will be coming back!
Sep 04, 2023 · J HauberWe enjoy this campground and try to come at least once a year. We prefer Cain Hollow/Quaker Area over Red House Area for camping. The sites are roomier. This trip we stayed at site 73 with our 27’ camper. It’s not a very deep site but we did have enough room on the non-awning side of our camper to set up a large tent and play corn hole. On the backside of the campsite is a small embankment and just on the other side of it is a creek, which the kids enjoyed playing in. Campground bathrooms were large and clean.
Aug 22, 2022 · Amanda KGreat campground with some privacy between sites and recent updates unlike the Red House area. The bathroom facilities were nice and clean and the park at Quaker lake was amazing. The only issue we had was low voltage at the 30 amp sites which drained our battery over the weekend.
Sep 18, 2018 · Adam BasaranWe had site 48. It was beautiful, quiet, & peaceful, even though we were right across from the bathroom. It backs up to a creek. We had a couple visitors (raccoon & bear) no problems with them. The Park itself is fantastic.
