Camp Gateway - Sandy Hook

26 Hudson Rd, Highlands, NJ 07732, USA

Great tent-camping site. Nice knowing there won't be a generator roaring next door.Notes: lots of animals (raccoons and foxes), so use the "bear boxes" for all food and trash. Ocean-side beach parking NOT included, but bay side accessible and kind of more interesting anyway. If you want to access ocean beaches (which are nice) bring bikes--they're too far from camp to walk (or pay the extra to park). Very nice biking trails to explore the area.Cars not permitted at actual camp sites, but parking lot nearby (may fill up if busy).Well-lit central restroom facility with "flushies" but no showers. No electricity at sites but potable water nearby. No playgrounds. Some sites have picnic shelters. Plenty of poison ivy in parks but avoidable in camp. Must buy firewood there if you want a campfire (no gleaning/carry-in). No soda/snack machines (there are elsewhere in the park). 24-hr access to camp once registered (i.e., if you have to come and go during stay). Friendly rangers. My new favorite campground! - Kathy Mulholland

Camp Gateway - Sandy Hook Introduce

For our local users in US seeking fantastic tent camping experiences under the category "camping near me," let's explore Camp Gateway - Sandy Hook, located at 26 Hudson Rd, Highlands, NJ 07732, USA, based on recent customer reviews. While this location is in the United States, understanding its unique offerings can help you identify similar appealing features when using local USese camping platforms.

The environment of Camp Gateway - Sandy Hook is characterized by its proximity to both the ocean and bay areas within the Sandy Hook National Recreation Area. One reviewer noted the accessibility of the bay side, which they found "kind of more interesting" anyway. While ocean-side beach parking is not included for campers, the ocean beaches themselves are accessible, albeit requiring a bike ride or payment for parking due to the distance from the campground. The presence of "lots of animals (raccoons and foxes)" is a notable environmental aspect, requiring campers to use provided "bear boxes" for all food and trash to ensure safety and prevent wildlife interference. The park also has "plenty of poison ivy," though it is reportedly avoidable within the campground itself. The emphasis on a generator-free environment ensures a quieter and more natural auditory experience for tent campers.

In terms of services, Camp Gateway - Sandy Hook provides essential amenities for a comfortable tent camping experience. There is a "well-lit central restroom facility" equipped with flush toilets, though showers are not available within the campground itself. However, nearby beaches do have outdoor shower facilities. Potable water is accessible at various points within the campground. Campers must purchase firewood on-site if they wish to have a campfire, as gleaning or carrying in firewood is not permitted. There are no soda or snack machines directly at the campground, but they are available elsewhere in the park. Once registered, campers have 24-hour access to the camp, allowing flexibility for coming and going. Friendly park rangers are also present to assist visitors. For hauling gear from the nearby parking lot to the walk-in campsites (about a ¼ mile), carts are available.

The features of Camp Gateway - Sandy Hook cater primarily to tent campers seeking a natural and activity-filled getaway. There are 20 tent sites spread across four loops. It's important to note that there is "NO beach access" directly from the campground itself, which contradicts one reviewer's note about bayside access. Some campsites are equipped with picnic shelters, while others are not, so it's advisable to pay attention to site details when making reservations. All sites include a fire pit and a picnic table. The campground is walk-in only (about ¼ mile from the parking lot). A significant feature is the abundance of activities available in the surrounding area. These include (non-motorized) water sports and sunbathing at the beaches (including Gunnison, a nude beach), exploring the military history of the area through NPS tours, visiting the oldest working lighthouse in the US, and enjoying the multi-use trails for walking and biking. Birding is also a popular activity. Additionally, the nearby Hartshorne Woods Park offers excellent hiking and mountain bike trails.

Promotional information gleaned from the reviews highlights the "great tent-camping site" atmosphere, the peacefulness due to the absence of generators, and the friendly rangers. The variety of nearby activities, from beaches to historical sites and nature trails, adds significant value to the camping experience at Camp Gateway - Sandy Hook. The emphasis on using bear boxes underscores a commitment to coexisting with the local wildlife responsibly.
