Camp Gateway Brooklyn Tamarak and Goldenrod

Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn, NY 11234, USA

3.0
For a place to camp in NYC its not bad at all. It's on an old air field that still has helicopter traffic but it's cool. Positives... very safe. It's far enough from the hood that you don't have to worry about anything. The ranger is very helpful and cool and the sites have picnic tables and fire pits along with grills. Negatives.... mosquitos are the worst I have experienced and we are from Florida. They don't even care if you cover your self in cutter. Lots of raccoons. They are not afraid of people so )/bringing bring your food and backpacks inside. First night one went in my wife's purse. All in all we camp a lot and I would come back here. Fyi you can not walk to the subway or bus so be prepared to pay for parking in the city. Other notes.... They have camp store, hot showers, clean bathrooms. - John Kruk

Camp Gateway Brooklyn Tamarak and Goldenrod Introduce

For local adventurers seeking a unique "camping near me" experience within the bustling landscape of New York City, Camp Gateway Brooklyn Tamarak and Goldenrod offers an intriguing option. Located at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, NY 11234, USA, this campground provides an opportunity to immerse oneself in the outdoors while still being within reach of the city's attractions. Situated on the grounds of New York City's first airport, the location itself offers a distinctive backdrop for a camping getaway.

Based on feedback from actual campers, the environment of Camp Gateway Brooklyn Tamarak and Goldenrod presents a somewhat unconventional camping setting. Being located on an old airfield, a significant portion of the campground, particularly the RV sites, consists of tarmac. This is a crucial point for tent campers to note, as booking an RV site for tent camping would result in setting up on a paved surface. However, reviewers mention that the "walk-in" sites are generally considered "pretty good," suggesting a more traditional camping feel in those designated areas. While the urban location might raise concerns about safety, campers have reported feeling "very safe" within the campground, noting its distance from more densely populated areas. One unique environmental aspect is the presence of helicopter traffic due to ongoing activity at the old airfield, which some might find interesting. It's important to be aware of potential noise. Additionally, the campground is part of the larger Gateway National Park, providing access to various natural and historical attractions in the vicinity.

Customer reviews offer valuable insights into the services and amenities available at Camp Gateway Brooklyn Tamarak and Goldenrod. Campers have highlighted the presence of "nice staff," with specific mention of a "very helpful and cool" ranger, indicating a positive and supportive atmosphere. Essential camping amenities are provided at each site, including picnic tables, fire pits, and grills, enhancing the traditional camping experience. Furthermore, the campground offers practical facilities such as a camp store for basic necessities, hot showers, and clean bathrooms, adding a level of comfort and convenience often appreciated by both novice and experienced campers. For safety and wildlife management, the presence of raccoons is explicitly mentioned, with a strong recommendation to secure all food and backpacks inside tents or vehicles, as these animals are reportedly not afraid of people. This underscores the importance of practicing Leave No Trace principles and being mindful of local wildlife. While not directly a service, the access to trails within Gateway National Park, including the interesting "Bottle Beach" at "Dead Horse Bay," and the proximity to attractions like the hangar restoring old planes (with useful tour guides) and Riis beach, significantly enhance the overall camping experience by offering opportunities for exploration and recreation.

The features of Camp Gateway Brooklyn Tamarak and Goldenrod cater to a range of camping preferences, with some unique aspects stemming from its location. The "walk-in" sites are a notable feature for tent campers seeking a more traditional ground-level experience, while the availability of RV sites accommodates those traveling with recreational vehicles. The inclusion of picnic tables, fire pits, and grills at each site facilitates outdoor cooking and gathering. The presence of a camp store, hot showers, and clean bathrooms adds a layer of convenience often desired, especially for longer stays or those new to camping. The strong emphasis on safety, as reported by campers, is a significant feature, particularly for a campground within New York City. The unique location on the former Floyd Bennett Field and its inclusion within Gateway National Park provide access to a rich array of nearby attractions, including historical sites, nature trails, and beaches. The proximity to "Bottle Beach" and "Dead Horse Bay," with their intriguing histories, and the aircraft restoration hangar offer unique opportunities for exploration and learning. However, it is crucial to note the significant presence of mosquitoes, described by one reviewer as "the worst I have experienced," even for someone from Florida. Campers should come prepared with strong insect repellent. Another key feature, or rather a lack thereof, is the limited accessibility to public transportation. Campers should be prepared to pay for parking if they plan to travel into other parts of the city, as walking to the subway or bus is not feasible from the campground.
