Camp Pollock Introduce
Camp Pollock, situated at 1501 Northgate Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95815, USA, is a unique and multifaceted property managed by the Sacramento Valley Conservancy. While a search for "Camping Near Me" might bring up Camp Pollock, it's crucial for prospective users to understand its specific nature. This location is not a typical public campground for individual or RV camping; instead, it primarily functions as a rental venue for events and provides organized group camping for educational and youth groups. Its historical significance and natural setting along the American River Parkway make it a distinctive site in Sacramento.
The environment of Camp Pollock is one of its most appealing features. Spanning 11 acres along the north bank of the American River, the property boasts a rustic yet scenic setting. It is enveloped by mature trees, including oaks, willows, and cottonwoods, providing a natural and often shady environment. The presence of a native plant garden and interpretive signs throughout a mile of walking trails adds to the natural appeal, offering educational opportunities about local flora and fauna. Reviewers note that kids enjoy reading these signs, and the new kids' play area is a great addition, making it suitable for family-oriented events. The proximity to the American River provides "beautiful views" and "river access" for non-motorized boats like kayaks and canoes, although it's a natural access point without a formal dock or launch ramp. Despite being less than 10 minutes from downtown Sacramento, Camp Pollock manages to maintain a secluded feel, allowing visitors to observe wildlife such as deer, pheasant, wild turkeys, river otters, and various bird species. However, one review noted that the site could be "dirty and unkept" upon arrival, suggesting that cleanliness can be inconsistent. It's also open to the public from sunrise to sunset, which means private events might not have exclusive use of the entire property unless specifically arranged and paid for.
The services offered at Camp Pollock are primarily structured around its function as an event rental venue and a group camping site. For event rentals, the Myrtle Johnston Lodge, a 3,000 square foot historic building from the 1920s, is available, complete with a wraparound porch, magnificent stone fireplace, and access to attached indoor restrooms. The lodge rental includes 10 rectangular six-foot tables and 70 folding chairs. There is also a covered River Deck overlooking the American River and a Courtyard with picnic tables and a small stage. Wi-Fi is available in the lodge. For group camping, which is strictly limited to organized educational and youth groups (minimum 11 campers), services include access to showers and toilets, water available at central points (not individual campsites), and picnic tables in select campsites. Burn permits are required for open fires. However, it's crucial to note that "No RV or vehicular camping is allowed" and "individual camping is also prohibited." Communication with staff is predominantly through text message and email, and getting someone on the phone can be challenging, as noted in a critical review. Services like set-up, break down, and cleaning are generally not provided by the venue, placing responsibility on the renter. There's an additional charge of $200 if the facility is to haul out trash, emphasizing a "pack it in, pack it out" policy for campers and event organizers.
Key features of Camp Pollock include its historic Myrtle Johnston Lodge, which provides a rustic and charming indoor space for events. The River Deck and Courtyard offer versatile outdoor settings with river views and a native plant garden. The mile of walking trails with interpretive signs makes it an engaging location for educational activities and nature appreciation. For youth and organized groups, the availability of a dedicated group camping area with showers and restrooms is a significant feature, offering a rare opportunity for outdoor education within the city limits of Sacramento. The new kids' play area enhances its family-friendly appeal for events. The site is ADA accessible, with parking and ramps. The Sacramento Valley Conservancy's mission to preserve the land and provide public access and education is a core feature of Camp Pollock. Future improvements, funded by the City, include a riverview platform, improved river access trail, and a kitchen remodel in the lodge, which will enhance its capabilities as an event venue.
Promotional information for Camp Pollock focuses on its unique position as a versatile event space and a dedicated site for organized group camping in Sacramento. For individuals or organizations searching "Camping Near Me" with specific group or event needs, Camp Pollock is presented as an ideal location for staff retreats, meetings, family gatherings, classes, day and overnight camps, volunteer projects, and even weddings. The promotional messaging highlights its "rustic yet elegant" appeal, lush surroundings, tranquil river, and rich history. The flexibility to bring in outside caterers, decorators, and entertainers is a major selling point for event planners. However, potential renters should be aware of the detailed requirements and additional costs, as highlighted in one extensive review. The advertisement pricing for rentals can be misleading, as additional requirements like liability insurance, hiring personal security, and being responsible for cleaning the entire facility (even if received not perfectly clean) can significantly increase the total cost, potentially reaching $3,000 to $4,000 for an event. The lack of a kitchen and the need for additional licensing and insurance for selling food are also important considerations. Despite these complexities, the overall consensus is that for the right type of group or event—particularly those with an educational or outdoor focus, or those seeking a unique, naturally beautiful setting for a private gathering—Camp Pollock offers a memorable experience. Prospective users are strongly advised to thoroughly review the website and directly contact the management at (916) 792-4368 or +1 916-792-4368 to fully understand all requirements, costs, and current availability before planning any event or group camping trip.

Camp Pollock Reviews
Kids enjoy reading the signs that talk about the animals and history. New kids play area is great too.
Oct 19, 2024 · Kelly HopkinsI was very disappointed with my overall experience not only with camp Pollock but with the individual staffing the location. READ THE WEBSITE IN ITS ENTIRETY!!!When I showed up to preview the location, the site was dirty and unkept.Communication with staff is only done through text message and email. It's almost impossible to get anybody on the phone. The advertisement price for renting locations is misleading. The requirements for you to rent this location not only insurance, you must hire your own security, you're responsible for cleaning the entire facility even though you receive it not as clean as they want it to be, they charge you an additional $200 if you wish for them to haul your trash out, the list goes on...After everything's all said and done, you're easily spending between $3,000 and $4,000 for this location. And that's not including the fact that they don't have a kitchen. And if you're selling anything there such as food for your event, that's an additional insurance and licensing that they require. If you are looking for a cheap option to host an event, look somewhere else. If you're looking for a location that has quality customer service with reliable communication, look somewhere else, if you're looking for a location that includes any amenities such as a refrigerator, stove, trash cans or security look somewhere else....This location is open to the public and you don't need reservations to show up and take pictures just as a FYI.
Feb 25, 2025 · desmonos TylerI stumbled upon this place when i was walking along the highway.A guy on a squidward bike told me the area flooded, so i think that's the reason all the gates were busted open, and everything looked abandoned.Saw a dude with two dogs flying a drone, the rest was soo desolate, the world might aswell revolve around that one man.
Jul 08, 2023 · ShaneI'm a wedding DJ and this review is from a DJs perspective. The building and grounds are quite nice with plenty of power and set up areas. I was set up in the far corner near the ramp and wound up getting wet when the rain blew in. Be sure to set up father in. There was no where to unload near by so it was quite the trek to get gear in place.Overall a nice place for a wedding. Challenging load in and other minor concerns.
Sep 30, 2019 · Ron MartinI did not care too much about the camp area; it was hot and there weren't any trees to utilize for shade but it was a motorcycle event which my friend is involved with and it was great!! I saw tons of beautiful motorcycles 🏍 and beautiful established black people. Everyone was friendly and welcoming and the DJ played the best music 🎶 🎵..." loved it "!!
