Located at 7980 Rattlesnake Bar Rd, Pilot Hill, CA 95664, USA, this campground offers a unique blend of secluded natural beauty and convenient access to the expansive Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. While a specific direct phone number for the campground itself is not widely publicized, general inquiries for Folsom Lake State Recreation Area can often be directed to (916) 988-0205, and reservations are primarily managed through the California State Parks reservation system or by calling (800) 444-7275.
Peninsula Campground is celebrated for its peaceful and picturesque environment. Situated on a secluded peninsula between the north and south forks of the American River, it offers a more remote and less crowded camping experience compared to other areas around Folsom Lake. The campground is nestled amidst open woodlands featuring native blue oaks and foothill pines, providing natural shade and a classic Californian landscape. Reviews consistently highlight "great views" and a "peaceful atmosphere," especially during mid-week visits. Campers often note that despite being "a little bit far away," the journey is "definitely worthy of coming." The area is characterized by its rolling hills and a mix of greenery in spring, transitioning to a golden hue in the dryer summer months. The proximity to Folsom Lake means stunning water views are often available from campsites, creating a serene backdrop for outdoor relaxation. While the road leading to the campground can be "winding" and requires careful driving, the seclusion it offers is a major draw for those seeking a genuine escape into nature. The presence of wildlife, such as coyotes and wild turkeys, further enhances the natural immersion. Campers are advised to bring bug spray, as mosquitoes can be present, especially during certain seasons.
Peninsula Campground offers essential services and amenities designed to provide a comfortable and self-sufficient camping experience. Each campsite typically includes a picnic table, a BBQ grill, and a fire ring, ideal for cooking and enjoying traditional campfires (though fire restrictions may apply seasonally, often allowing natural gas or propane BBQs even if wood/charcoal fires are prohibited). Potable drinking water spigots are conveniently located throughout the campground, ensuring access to fresh water. For hygiene, the campground provides flush toilets and coin-operated hot showers (50 cents for 4 minutes), which are maintained by California State Parks staff. A sanitary dump station is available for RV and trailer users, located near the eastern edge of the campsites. Trash collection facilities are also readily accessible, promoting cleanliness and responsible waste disposal. The campground is pet-friendly, allowing dogs on a leash (maximum 6 feet), though certain restrictions apply, such as dogs not being allowed on beaches. There is a small per-pet fee, and pet owners are expected to ensure their animals are restrained and quiet. Generator use is permitted during specific hours, typically from 10 AM to 8 PM, accommodating RV campers who require power. Quiet hours are strictly enforced from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM to maintain a peaceful environment for all guests. The presence of camp hosts and park rangers ensures assistance and adherence to campground rules.
Peninsula Campground offers approximately 100 family campsites, accommodating various camping styles. These sites are a mix of tent-only and mixed-use sites suitable for RVs and trailers. RVs and motorhomes up to 24 feet in length, and trailers up to 18 feet, are generally accommodated, though some sources indicate up to 31 feet for RVs/trailers. It's important to note that individual campsites do not offer hookups (electrical, water, or sewer), making it a dry camping experience. Campsites are typically dirt pads, and while many are level, some may require leveling blocks for RVs. Each site is designed to offer a private space with its own picnic table, fire ring, and grill. The campground also features two boat launch ramps and a day-use area nearby, catering to water sports enthusiasts. For those seeking a more luxurious outdoor experience, third-party glamping options may be available, offering furnished deluxe tents with real beds and some basic amenities, located within walking distance of public restrooms and showers. Reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak seasons, and can typically be made up to six months in advance through the California State Parks reservation system. The base fee usually covers up to 8 guests and 2 vehicles per individual site, with additional charges for extra people, pets, and vehicles. Some sites are better suited for lake views or privacy, and maps are available online to help campers choose their preferred spot.
Peninsula Campground's location at 7980 Rattlesnake Bar Rd in Pilot Hill, within the vast Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, provides an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities. Campers have direct access to mountain bike trails that wind all around the peninsula, catering to cycling enthusiasts. The lake itself is a hub for water activities, including boating, swimming, fishing (with trout, bass, and catfish being common catches), kayaking, paddleboarding, and water skiing. Over 80 miles of equestrian trails and 32 miles of paved bike paths connect to other regional parks, offering extensive exploration opportunities. For those interested in a more secluded experience, the North Fork and South Fork of the American River offer quiet trails. While the campground feels "out of the way," as one review notes, it is accessible by driving approximately ten miles from the small town of Pilot Hill on Highway 49. It can also be accessed by boat. The relative remoteness contributes to its peaceful atmosphere but also means campers should plan to bring all necessary supplies, as nearby stores in the "city of Cool" or other towns may be a winding drive away. This balance of seclusion and recreational access makes Peninsula Campground an appealing choice for those who value an immersive outdoor experience within reach of regional attractions.
Peninsula Campground is promoted as a fantastic destination for "Camping Near Me" in the Folsom Lake area, offering a serene environment and ample opportunities for outdoor adventure. It is open year-round, but peak season is typically from April to September. Due to its popularity, especially on weekends and holidays, securing reservations well in advance is crucial. Visitors should be prepared for varying weather conditions, particularly hot summers, and ensure they bring sufficient water and sun protection. Given the dry camping nature, RV and trailer campers should be self-sufficient with their power and water needs, utilizing the designated dump station and public water spigots. Adherence to park rules, including fire restrictions, quiet hours, and pet regulations, is essential for a pleasant stay and to ensure the preservation of the natural environment. The positive reviews highlighting "great views" and a "peaceful" atmosphere despite the remote location reinforce its appeal. For those seeking a beautiful, somewhat secluded, and activity-rich camping experience in the Folsom Lake region, Peninsula Campground offers a worthwhile option that combines natural beauty with essential amenities.

Peninsula Campground Reviews
Great place to camp, not too busy and great views! Bit out of the way but there's also mountain bike trails all around the peninsula. Some mosquitos so bring bug spray.
Apr 08, 2025 · Eric PtacekAwesome place to camp. Other campsites near Bay Area are always full. Though this one is a little bit far away but definitely worthy of coming. The road might be too winding so need to drive very carefully and slowly. Many people would be here and play around so we feel very safe to stay. Overall I would like to come here again.
May 22, 2023 · Qiming LiuIt is a very calm and peaceful campground. The size of each site is relativle small compared to those of other state park campgrounds.
May 06, 2024 · K WindrunnerBeautiful, quite, piped running water, showers, a campsite with a spectacular view for 3 nights and all for $80🤯😁. I'll take that deal any day of the year over some outrageously priced hotel room chain that serves powdered eggs for breakfast 😂.
Apr 28, 2024 · Walter CampbellRoad coming up makes it very inconvenient to go back into town once here. They’ve also decided that since we’re in a heatwave they wanted to last minute turn off the water so no one has flushable toilets or showers. Seriously think they’re trying to kill us all it’s 109 degrees… should’ve at least offered a refund.
