We’ve made this the annual trip for my wife’s birthday at the end of March. It’s a nice weekend away, when we have nothing to do, no other obligations. There is a bunch of history in the area including the gold rush and a couple short hikes. Weather in Spring can be unpredictable, and the river is moving very fast. Watch your kids. The park is clean, well maintained and staff is friendly. - Dustin Curley

Coloma Resort Introduce

Coloma Resort, situated at 6921 Mt Murphy Rd, Coloma, CA 95613, USA, stands as a prime destination for those searching within the "Camping Near Me" category, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and a wide array of recreational activities. Nestled in the heart of California's historic Gold Country, directly on the South Fork of the American River and adjacent to the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, this resort provides an immersive outdoor experience for families, groups, and individuals.

The environment at Coloma Resort is exceptionally rich and diverse. It boasts nearly half a mile of picturesque riverfront, providing direct access to the American River, which is a major draw for various water sports. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills, lush woodlands, and the serene flow of the river, creating a tranquil and scenic backdrop for camping. The resort is located within acres of State Park land, which means guests are enveloped by historical landmarks and natural trails. The air is typically clean and fresh, offering a stark contrast to urban environments. While the weather can be unpredictable, particularly in spring with fast-moving river currents, the natural beauty persists year-round. This setting allows for a deep connection with nature, complemented by the historical ambiance of the Gold Rush era that permeates the area.

Coloma Resort distinguishes itself with a comprehensive range of services designed to enhance the camping experience. Essential amenities typically include clean and well-maintained restrooms with hot showers, potable water access at sites, and dump stations for RVs. The resort features a general store, often referred to as "The Store," which, as customer reviews indicate, has undergone changes but still aims to be stocked with essential camping supplies, snacks, convenience items, and even gold panning equipment. Guests can expect Wi-Fi throughout the campground, which is a modern convenience that allows for some connectivity while still enjoying the outdoors. For dining, there is often an on-site cafe, like the Argonaut Farm to Fork Cafe, offering meals. Pet waste stations are available, signifying a pet-friendly environment, though specific pet policies and fees apply. The staff is generally described as friendly and helpful, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere. Furthermore, the resort offers outdoor group meeting spaces, highlighting its capacity to host events and gatherings.

The features of Coloma Resort are extensive and cater to a wide spectrum of preferences. Accommodations are notably varied, ranging from traditional tent sites, including prime river tenting spots, to RV sites with full or partial hookups. Beyond conventional camping, Coloma Resort has expanded its lodging options significantly. These now include various cabin types such as South Fork Cabins (some with lofts), Miner's Cabins, and Gold Rush Cabins. For a more unique experience, guests can opt for glamping tents, bunkhouses ideal for families or groups, and even two covered wagons, offering a touch of historical immersion with modern comforts. This diverse lodging portfolio ensures that whether you prefer rustic camping or a more luxurious "glamping" stay, Coloma Resort has an option. Recreational features are abundant and largely leverage the American River. Whitewater rafting, kayaking, and tubing are prominent activities, with partnerships sometimes available for guided trips. For those interested in the historical aspect, gold panning is a popular activity, and supplies are available on-site. Land-based activities include numerous hiking and biking trails directly accessible from the resort, often leading through the adjacent Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. The resort also boasts a seasonal swimming pool, children's playgrounds, and various sports equipment available for checkout, including basketball hoops, ping pong tables, and large checkers/chess sets. The presence of a gated grounds feature adds to the sense of privacy and comfort for guests.

Promotional information for Coloma Resort often emphasizes its position as a family-friendly destination with a rich historical backdrop. The resort actively promotes its diverse lodging options, from economical tent sites to unique glamping and cabin rentals, highlighting the ability to cater to different budgets and preferences. The phone number (530) 621-2267 or +1 530-621-2267 serves as the primary contact for reservations and inquiries. Promotional materials often encourage early booking, especially for popular riverfront sites and during peak season or historical reenactment events like the annual gold rush reenactment. The resort offers various deals and discounts, including potential promotions for mid-week stays, military/veteran discounts, and early booking incentives for future seasons. Information regarding rates, additional guest fees, pet fees, vehicle policies, and cancellation policies are transparently provided. The connection to the Gold Rush history is a significant promotional hook, inviting guests to "step back in time" and experience the region's legacy firsthand through educational programs and the proximity to Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. The availability of on-site activities and proximity to local attractions such as Apple Hill and local wineries are also highlighted to entice visitors seeking a comprehensive vacation experience. The "Camping Near Me" category benefits from such comprehensive offerings, as it allows users to find a destination that provides not just a place to sleep, but an entire itinerary of experiences.

Objectively, based on customer reviews and available information, Coloma Resort is largely praised for its location, cleanliness, and friendly staff. One reviewer notes, "The park is clean, well maintained and staff is friendly," indicating a positive experience regarding the upkeep and customer service. The strong historical connection and proximity to the American River for recreational activities like rafting and tubing are consistently highlighted as major positives. The expansion of lodging options, including cabins, glamping tents, and covered wagons, is seen as a significant improvement, offering more comfort and variety. However, some changes, such as the new store lacking the "charm" and variety of the old one, and the removal of historical facades like the "chicken coop and the little old west town," have been met with mixed feelings by long-time visitors. These changes, while possibly aimed at modernization or efficiency, have impacted the nostalgic "corny old times photos" opportunity for some. Despite these specific points of critique, the overall sentiment points to a resort that has invested in its property, maintaining cleanliness and offering a wide range of activities. The comment, "It's not cheap, but they have really cleaned up the property and we saw the crew cleaning leafs and taking trash constantly," suggests a value proposition where the cost is justified by the maintenance and offerings. The acknowledgment of unpredictable spring weather and fast river currents serves as a practical heads-up for visitors, reinforcing the objective nature of the feedback. Ultimately, Coloma Resort is a well-established and evolving camping destination that, despite some nostalgic changes, continues to provide a robust and engaging outdoor and historical experience for those searching for "Camping Near Me" options.
