American River Resort Introduce
For those actively seeking "Camping Near Me" in the heart of California's historic Gold Country, American River Resort in Coloma, CA, stands as a prominent and versatile destination. Located at 6019 New River Rd, Coloma, CA 95613, USA, this resort offers a wide spectrum of accommodation options, from traditional camping to more luxurious cabin stays. You can contact them directly for inquiries and reservations at (530) 622-6700 or +1 530-622-6700. The resort is specifically designed to be a "one-stop source for overnight camping and whitewater adventure," allowing guests to book lodging and river trips simultaneously.
American River Resort is strategically nestled on 30 wooded acres along the bank of the South Fork of the American River. This prime location immerses guests in the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada foothills and places them directly within the historical context of California's Gold Rush. The environment is rich with wildlife, with frequent sightings of deer and various birds, adding to the natural ambiance. The presence of the river itself is a significant draw, offering picturesque views and direct access for water-based activities. While one off-season review noted some cleanliness issues in a cabin and construction noise starting early, the general setting is described as "cool, right on the river." The resort aims to provide an outdoor escape that balances wild beauty with modern comforts. The property is designed to host a variety of guests, from families and adventure seekers to those attending special events like weddings, utilizing its natural backdrops of the river, pond, or grassy meadows.
American River Resort offers an extensive array of services and amenities, catering to diverse camping and lodging needs. For all campsite types (tent and RV), standard features include picnic tables and fire pits (subject to seasonal fire restrictions). A key amenity is the in-ground swimming pool, providing a refreshing option during warmer months. The resort also boasts a stocked fishing pond, offering a convenient spot for angling enthusiasts. Restroom and shower facilities are available, with free hot showers for guests. For RV campers, spacious RV sites come with full hookups, including 30 amp power, water, and sewage disposal. The resort also provides WiFi access, though one review in the off-season suggested communication and staff presence might be limited during quieter periods, potentially impacting responsiveness. There is a general store on-site for convenience, offering camping supplies and other necessities. Pets are welcome at the resort's campsites and RV sites (maximum 2 pets per campsite), with a signed pet agreement required at check-in. However, it is crucial to note that pets are strictly prohibited inside or on the decks of cabins, and must be leashed at all times and not left unattended. Responsible pet ownership, including cleaning up after pets and controlling barking, is strictly enforced. The resort also features play areas for children and is equipped to host large events, including weddings and corporate retreats, with dedicated event spaces like a Reception Center and various outdoor venues.
American River Resort distinguishes itself by offering a wide range of accommodation types beyond just traditional "Camping Near Me" options:
- Tent Camping: Camp along the river or amidst the trees. Sites typically include a fire ring and picnic table.
- RV Sites: The resort offers full hookup RV spaces with 30 amp power, water, and sewage, along with a fire ring and picnic table at each site. There are 35 RV spaces available.
- Glamping (Cabin Tents): For a more luxurious outdoor experience, glamping options feature spacious platform cabin tents, providing a more comfortable stay than traditional tent camping.
- Deluxe Cabins: These are a significant feature, offering indoor accommodations with amenities like a queen bed, queen sofa-bed, full kitchen (two-burner stovetop, microwave, coffee pot, toaster, pots, pans, utensils, dishes, flatware), bathroom with shower, veranda, propane BBQ, and free WiFi. Some cabins are riverfront or offer river views, providing a premium experience. Reviews, however, suggest that guests should verify cleanliness and functionality (e.g., heater) upon check-in, particularly during the off-season, and be aware of potential use of heavily scented cleaning products.
The resort emphasizes that these varied options allow guests to "select your level of comfort." Reservations for all accommodation types are strongly recommended, especially during peak seasons, and can be made online or by phone. Weekend online bookings often require both Friday and Saturday nights. The resort has a cancellation policy that includes a fee for cancellations made within 30 days of the reservation, with no refunds for "no shows" or cancellations made less than 29 days prior to the start date. This policy highlights the limited availability and high demand for their spaces, underscoring the need for careful planning by guests.
American River Resort's location at 6019 New River Rd in Coloma, CA, is a major asset, placing it at the epicenter of outdoor adventure and Gold Rush history. It is just minutes' walk from the historic James Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, where gold was first discovered, offering visitors an immersive educational experience. The resort acts as a "basecamp" for a multitude of activities in El Dorado County. Directly accessible from the resort are whitewater rafting trips on the American River's South Fork, with various daily departures. Other popular activities include river tubing, hiking on numerous trails (such as Cronan Ranch), fishing (including fly-fishing in the river or in the stocked pond), and mountain biking on nearby trails. The resort is also conveniently located in the heart of El Dorado Wine Country, with over 50 wineries and tasting rooms for those interested in viticulture. For broader exploration, day trips to Folsom Lake or even Lake Tahoe are feasible. The resort provides detailed driving directions, advising against relying solely on GPS due to potential signal loss and recommending specific routes from Sacramento, Reno, and South Lake Tahoe for easier RV access. This combination of on-site activities and proximity to regional attractions makes American River Resort an ideal hub for an active and exploratory vacation, especially for those searching "Camping Near Me" with an interest in a diverse range of outdoor pursuits.
American River Resort positions itself as the "premier ADVENTURES & EVENTS RESORT on the American River," emphasizing its blend of outdoor excitement, comfortable lodging, and event hosting capabilities. They promote various seasonal events and activities, from spring break and rafting season to fall weddings and holiday festivities. They offer gift certificates for rafting trips, making them an option for gifts. For prospective guests, particularly those finding the resort through "Camping Near Me" searches, it's vital to note the feedback concerning off-season experiences. The review mentioning limited staff communication and construction noise during the off-season, along with cleanliness issues in a cabin, suggests that the experience may vary significantly between peak and off-peak times. While the resort highlights its "convenience" and "big space" for cabins, these points are tempered by the issues reported. The cancellation policy, which involves a fee for cancellations made even 30 days prior and no refunds within 29 days, underscores the need for firm travel plans. It is advisable for prospective guests to:
- Inquire about the level of staff presence and services available during their planned visit dates, especially if traveling in the off-season.
- Confirm the specific amenities and condition of the exact accommodation type they are booking, particularly cabins, and inquire about cleaning practices.
- Review the detailed cancellation and refund policies carefully.
- Consider the resort's location and access routes, especially if driving a large RV, as recommended by the resort itself.
Despite some negative feedback related to specific experiences, the resort's comprehensive offerings, prime riverfront location, and variety of recreational activities make it a strong contender for those looking for an adventure-filled and comfortable stay in Coloma, CA.

American River Resort Reviews
I stayed here 3 nights in the off season. There was little communication and the only staff we say were operations who started work at 7 am doing construction. I was quite let down with the cleanliness of the cabin. Dusty, tables that were not wiped down from the previous group, there was sand in the bed and a spare tire just hanging out behind the cabin. We paid a lot for the convince of staying there, big space for two people, kitchenett and on-site parking. They also used heavily scented products to do what cleaning they did which was nauseating and the heater was broken so we were given a space heater. The location itself is cool, right on the river. Lots of deer and birds. There's also a cat that tromps around.
Nov 18, 2024 · Julia MossWhen I spoke with the reseverationist, I was told that since it was the off-season, they would be open to a refund in case of weather. Weather happened. When attempting to get a refund, they were asking $30 for cancelation..
Mar 05, 2025 · AdamWe rented a tent site for 2 nights and did the chili bar trip. The Campsite is vary clean and well kept. Bathrooms are great, warm showers. The check in area has ice and a few things you might need, water shoes, sweatshirts, t shirts, sunscreen, dry bags. The pond was not great, could be the time of year.Be sure to bring a tube and a life vest to enjoy some swimming or tubing down the river. There are plenty of spots to watch people go down troublemaker and cheer them on.The guides were all great for the rafting trip.We will be coming again with a bigger group.
Aug 13, 2024 · L GI got a tent and my parents got a cabin. The tent wasn’t bad, it had 4 beds and my parents said the room was okay. The only thing was that it was really hot outside and the ac in the room didn’t work well. My favorite thing was the river, it was beautiful, I would definitely go again for just for that. One advice I would give for anyone who wants to come is: don’t forget sunscreen. I forgot to bring some 😬 and well I got really burnt.Overall it was a great experience with an amazing scenery.
Aug 08, 2024 · Imran (Imran)I rented a spot at American River Hotel and around 7pm I had just set up my awning, and sat down for a nice cozy quiet night to read my book. About 5 or 6 cars full of men uploaded right across the street from me, at the bathrooms, and started playing loud music, drinking, shouting and laughing. No one else was nearby and so I called to ask for a refund then and leave (wasnt even bothered in the sense of just agreeing to depart and get a refund) but no one answered. So I just left, leaving a message. I called back in the morning to get Melinda or Mirada (I forget which) to advise that I had to leave due to the loudness. She apologized but never got back to me for 2 weeks (she claimed she did but i never got a message but lets grant that she did). I called her back to get an answer on a refund or even credit, assuming that was a rare occasion, I would come back. She affirmed who they were, so affirmed that it did happen, but because no one else was around and therefore it didn't bother anyone else, they wouldn't credit or refund me. I will not be going back. I camp a whole lot and most if not all have rules against such partying behavior but Melinda flip flopped saying they had until 10pm to party while in the same breath saying that if they bothered anyone they would put a stop to it. They did bother me and also no staff was around to stop or answer my phone call to complain in the first place. There was no way to get a refund. I was only there for a few hours and didn't even stay the night. If you have a problem good luck getting good or any service and especially good luck on getting your $ back. I'd advise going somewhere else. There are 2 other places nearby that offer better service.
