The Environment: Lakeside Beauty and Trail Access
Cardens Bluff Campground is lauded as "so beautiful, the perfect place to unwind." Its prime location on Watauga Lake is a significant environmental draw, offering campers direct access to the sparkling waters for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and simply enjoying the lakeside scenery. The lake itself is a major recreational asset, known for its clear waters and stunning mountain views.
Beyond the lake, the campground also boasts on-site trails, providing opportunities for leisurely walks and further immersion in the natural environment. Additionally, its proximity to Laurel Falls, just a few minutes away, offers the chance for a "gorgeous and a little challenging" 5-mile hike. The campground's location close to the Appalachian Trail (AT) is another major environmental and recreational feature, making it an appealing base for hikers looking to explore sections of this iconic long-distance trail.
One recurring point in the reviews is the varying condition of the trails. While one reviewer, a repeat visitor, expressed disappointment with the "lack of care of the trails" in a recent year, noting overgrowth of brush and poison ivy making access to the water difficult, another reviewer mentioned enjoying the on-site trails. This suggests that trail conditions might fluctuate, and it's advisable to inquire about the current status when booking.
Despite the trail concerns, the overall environment of Cardens Bluff Campground, with its beautiful lakeside setting and access to diverse hiking opportunities, remains a significant attraction for nature lovers.

Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: While not explicitly mentioned, these are standard amenities at most campgrounds.
It's worth noting the concern raised by a reviewer regarding poison ivy growing on concrete to the bathroom and on timbers and steps of several sites, indicating a potential maintenance issue that local users should be aware of. However, the positive feedback about the helpfulness of the hosts suggests that the campground management is responsive to guest needs.
While specific amenities like laundry facilities or a camp store are not mentioned, the focus seems to be on providing a beautiful natural setting with essential facilities and helpful service.

Cardens Bluff Campground Reviews
I have camped here several times over a 4 year period using sites 25, 27, and 28. I really love the 2 shelf shelter for stove, firewood, dish washing or whatever. The lake is the big draw and I love to be in the water. I was disappointed this year with the lack of care of the trails. The only way to the "point" to get in the water is from a short trail between 25 and 26 or a steep drop below 27. Always before the trails were kept up, not at all this year. You have to push your way through the brush and LOTS of poison ivy to get to the water. Real hard to get kayaks down there. I always felt sorry for people staying on 26 because people want to cut through their site. If the trail was cleaned up it would sure make it nice. Poison ivy is growing up on the concrete to the bathroom, on the timbers and steps of several sites.
Jul 09, 2024 · Anna Susette “Susette” ClarkThis campground is so beautiful, the perfect place to unwind. We stayed four nights and visited some on site trails as well as Laurel Falls just a few minutes from the campground. Our 5 mile hike there was absolutely gorgeous and a little challenging, just how I prefer. This site is close to the AT and there are plenty of fun ways to spend your time, especially if you brought a kayak or paddle board. We rented a boat from the closest marina and even got in the water for a bit! Everyone had a fantastic time, and our camp hosts were very helpful and accommodating. They even gave our car a jump before we left for home. Bathrooms were better than I expected for my first time camping, and we had everything we needed for our stay. We didn’t want to leave!
Sep 28, 2023 · Dare ThompsonThis campground is so beautiful. The campsites are all amazing-the majority with spectacular views of Watauga Lake. The camp pads have the best little shelf shelter to put your camp kitchen, wood, etc. the pads were level and fine gravel. The water stations and bathrooms ( actual flush toilets) are pretty convenient. All the sites feel private and then views.
Oct 09, 2023 · Laura BeldavsCamped at site 6. This is a beautiful campground. Their tent camping spots are fantastic. Fairly level and gravelled sites with a grated fire pit, picnic table, lantern hooks, and covered gear/wood storage. Easy access to Watauga lake and all of it's boat ramps. Several rent sites are right on the lake. Lots of fishing opportunities both in the campground and within walking distance. The camp gates are open from 7am-10pm. I like that because it makes the campground feel very secure. Our camp host, Jeff was fantastic. He's extremely knowledgeable, always pleasant to talk to and always happy to help. We will definitely be back often, since we live only 20 minutes away!
Jul 03, 2023 · S. K. WaldMy wife and I visited this camping ground where we stayed for two nights with our two kids: a 2-year-old and a 5-month-old. It was a fantastic camping experience. We were fortunate to secure a spot which offered a beautiful view, the spot is right on lake from side and close to the water tap from other side.
