Cherry Ridge Campground Introduce
For our local users in US searching for "camping near me," it's insightful to look at different types of camping experiences. Cherry Ridge Campground, located in West Edmeston, NY 13485, USA, offers a unique option: free camping in a natural setting. Reviews from visitors highlight both the appeal of this no-cost approach and some of the basic amenities and environmental features. Understanding such a model can help you appreciate the variety of camping opportunities available, even if free camping isn't the norm in your local searches.
One reviewer described Cherry Ridge Campground as a "perfect place for a weekend getaway," emphasizing the simplicity of the experience: "Just show up, sign the registry, pick your site and set up your tent or camper." This suggests a laid-back and uncomplicated approach to camping, which might appeal to those who prefer a more spontaneous outdoor adventure. However, this reviewer also noted a potential "downside" – that "the well at the entrance to the camping area seemed to have run dry." This is an important consideration for any "camping near me" location; access to water can be crucial, and it's worth noting if a site's water source might be unreliable.
Another reviewer shared their experience at Cherry Ridge as their "second free camping site in New York," stating that it "didn't fail to uphold the gold standard for free campgrounds here." This suggests that Cherry Ridge is considered a good example of free camping in the region. They mentioned "nine good sites" and "2 well maintained potro potties," indicating the presence of basic sanitation facilities. The reviewer also described the environment, noting "rivers running through our campsite," which highlights a key natural feature of the location. The sound and presence of rivers can greatly enhance the camping experience, offering opportunities for enjoying nature and a tranquil atmosphere. When looking for "camping near me" in US, consider if you prefer a campsite with water features.
This second review also provides a narrative of their stay, including dealing with rain and a significant drop in temperature. Despite these challenges, they were able to set up their tent, have a fire (even in the dark), and enjoy their evening by listening to music and stargazing after the clouds parted. This speaks to the resilience of campers who choose a more rustic experience and the potential for natural beauty even amidst less-than-ideal weather. The reviewer's positive attitude and preparedness ("We have some experience with camping in the cold and were well prepared with blankets and sleeping bags") are also noteworthy for anyone considering a camping trip, regardless of location.
Based on these reviews, the environment of Cherry Ridge Campground is characterized by a natural, possibly wooded setting with rivers running through the campsites. The fact that it's a free camping area might imply a less developed environment compared to private campgrounds with more amenities. The mention of rivers suggests potential for enjoying the sounds of flowing water and perhaps even some water-related activities, although this isn't explicitly stated. For those in US looking for "camping near me" who appreciate a more natural and less structured environment, Cherry Ridge offers an example of what a free, river-side campsite might be like.
The services at Cherry Ridge Campground appear to be quite basic, consistent with a free camping model. The presence of "2 well maintained potro potties" is noted, indicating that restroom facilities are available, albeit rudimentary. The potential issue with the well running dry suggests that a reliable water source might not always be guaranteed. Campers here likely need to be self-sufficient in terms of water and other supplies. When searching for "camping near me" in US, consider the level of amenities you require. Free or very low-cost campsites might offer fewer services but a more direct connection with nature.
The key features of Cherry Ridge Campground include its status as a free camping site, its natural environment with rivers, and the availability of basic facilities like porta-potties. The simplicity and the opportunity to "just show up" can be seen as features for those who value flexibility and a no-frills experience. However, the potential lack of a reliable water source is also a feature to be aware of. For those looking for "camping near me" in US, Cherry Ridge highlights the possibility of finding free or low-cost options that emphasize a natural setting, although the level of amenities might be minimal.
There is no explicit promotional information for Cherry Ridge Campground in the provided reviews. The fact that it's highlighted as a "gold standard for free campgrounds" by one reviewer could be seen as a form of positive word-of-mouth. For local users in US seeking "camping near me," this example underscores that value can be found in different types of camping experiences, even those that are free and offer basic amenities. The natural environment, particularly the presence of rivers, seems to be a significant draw.
In conclusion, Cherry Ridge Campground in West Edmeston, NY, offers a free camping experience in a natural environment with rivers. It provides basic amenities like porta-potties, but campers should be aware of potential issues with the water well. The appeal of Cherry Ridge lies in its simplicity, the beauty of its natural setting, and the cost-free access to camping. For local users in US searching for "camping near me," this example illustrates that camping experiences can range from highly developed resorts to more rustic, free sites. When exploring your local options, consider what aspects are most important to you – the cost, the level of amenities, the natural environment, and the overall simplicity or structure of the campground. While you cannot visit Cherry Ridge in New York, thinking about what makes it appealing (free, natural, rivers) can guide your search for similar experiences in US. You might look for free or low-cost camping areas near rivers or other natural attractions in your region.

Cherry Ridge Campground Reviews
Perfect place for a weekend getaway. Just show up, sign the registry, pick your site and set up your tent or camper. The only downside is that the well at the entrance to the camping area seemed to have run dry.
Sep 26, 2024 · Dan StedmanThis was our second free camping site in New York and it didn't fail to uphold the gold standard for free campgrounds here. There are nine good sites here with 2 well maintained potro potties. As an end to our trip the weather decided not to hold out anymore and it rained again. We were able to get the tent setup between the downpours but the fire had to be started in the dark. With rivers running through our campsite we set out to enjoy our last night, the weather would not get us down! The temperature also decided to drop from lows in the 60s to a low of 34 that night. Once we had the fire going and made dinner, we enjoyed ourselves by listening to music and singing and dancing by the fire. Nature enjoyed our revelry and the clouds parted and we had a beautiful view of the moon and the stars. We have some experience with camping in the cold and were well prepared with blankets and sleeping bags which had us nice and warm all night. In the morning we slowly packed up discussing the next time we could try this camping ground.
Oct 25, 2021 · Richard GoyetteNice campground. Had clean facilities. Only downside was had some inconsiderate neighbor's that were up all night playing music and carrying on.
Aug 05, 2023 · Cassandra CreasyGreat place to camp. Real clean! Definitely going back.
May 20, 2021 · dustin AmrheinThe roads are very well maintained, and the trail access is very good. It was pretty quiet, and seemed like a nice place if you're looking for a rough camping experience. They do have portable toilets, and a water pump wheel should you need water. If you're looking for amenities this isn't the camping area for you, but if you want a really northern woods camping experience this looks like a great place. You could see an assortment of animals including deer, raccoons, and wild fox.
