Chet's Place Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Port Clinton, Ohio area, Chet's Place, located at 7154 W Harbor Rd, presents itself as a campground with a notable feature: river access. However, based on recent and rather critical customer reviews, it is crucial for potential visitors to be aware of significant concerns regarding the environment, maintenance, sanitation, and overall camping experience before considering a stay.
One particularly alarming review paints a stark picture of the campground conditions. This camper reports that the driveways are consistently unmaintained, leading to severe flooding throughout the camping season. Despite these persistent issues, the reviewer claims that the owner takes no action to address the flooding and still expects full payment from campers. Furthermore, the review alleges a complete lack of upkeep on the campground's facilities. Adding to these concerns, the reviewer describes some of the staff as "extremely rude and nasty" and strongly advises against recommending Chet's Place, questioning its purported 4-star rating.
The most severe allegations in this review involve potential health and safety hazards. The camper states that due to the flooding, human feces were present in the water as a result of porta-johns floating over and issues with the campground's pump-out system. This paints a picture of unsanitary and potentially dangerous conditions, leading the reviewer to suggest that the health department should consider closing the campground. The only positive aspect mentioned in this highly critical review is the river access, which the reviewer believes is the sole reason why some people continue to camp there despite the challenging conditions.
Another review offers a different perspective but still raises significant concerns, particularly for those considering tent camping. This camper explicitly advises against tent camping at Chet's Place, stating that they were the only tent camper present. A peculiar and inconvenient situation was described where tent campers allegedly have to park their vehicles in a "junkyard" and then hike to their campsite. This suggests a lack of designated and accessible parking for tent campers and a potentially unkempt area for parking.
This second reviewer also characterizes the campground as being "like another planet," noting that while the river area is "really nice," the campground fosters a "close knit community of RV folk" who "do not welcome outsiders." While acknowledging a degree of respect for this insular community, this sentiment could be off-putting for local users seeking a more open and inclusive camping environment, especially if they are not part of the established RV community. The reviewer also mentions an interaction with two individuals named Chet and Bob, suggesting a discrepancy in their demeanor and business practices, with "Bob" being accused of "bamboozling" the camper.
Despite the overwhelmingly negative aspects highlighted in these reviews, the recurring mention of "river access" suggests that this is a significant natural amenity associated with Chet's Place. For local users who prioritize direct access to the river for activities like fishing, boating, or simply enjoying the waterfront, this feature might still hold some appeal. However, it is crucial to weigh this single positive against the numerous and serious concerns raised by other campers.
Given the severity of the allegations regarding flooding, lack of maintenance, unsanitary conditions, potentially rude staff, and unwelcoming atmosphere for non-RV campers, local users actively seeking "camping near me" should exercise extreme caution when considering Chet's Place. The discrepancies between a purported 4-star rating (mentioned by one reviewer as perplexing) and the actual experiences described are significant red flags.
It is important to note that the provided information does not include any promotional material or details about services and amenities beyond the river access. The focus of the available feedback is primarily on the negative aspects of the campground's environment and management. Therefore, it is impossible to provide a balanced introduction that highlights numerous positive features or promotional offers.
In conclusion, while Chet's Place in Port Clinton, OH, offers the advantage of river access, the recent customer reviews paint a concerning picture of a campground plagued by unmaintained driveways, persistent flooding, a lack of upkeep, potentially rude staff, and, most alarmingly, unsanitary conditions involving human waste in floodwaters. Tent campers may face additional challenges related to parking and a potentially unwelcoming community. Local users searching for camping options in the area are strongly advised to thoroughly consider these serious concerns and potentially explore alternative campgrounds that offer a safer, cleaner, and more welcoming environment. Direct contact with the campground at (419) 898-1104 or +1 419-898-1104 might provide further clarification, but the consistency and severity of the negative feedback warrant significant caution.

Chet's Place Reviews
The driveways are never maintained, it floods the whole season and the owner does nothing about it and still expects full payment. No upkeep at all is ever done on anything. Some of the help are extremely rude and nasty. Would not recommend at all and not sure how this place has 4 stars. It should be closed down by the health dept. Human feces were in the flooded water due to porta John's floating over and their so called pump out system. It is an unsafe, unsanitary and very crude place to camp. Only thing going for it is the river access or they wouldn't have the people they still have camping there trying to tough it out
Jul 30, 2019 · Sherri KleinhansI wouldn't advise tent camping here. You will be the only one and will have to park your car in a junkyard and hike it to your site. The place is like another planet it's really nice on the river. It's a close knit community of RV folk. They do not welcome outsiders.. I can respect that to a degree. Chet was much cooler than Bob who bamboozled me. It was cheap and I was in a pinch. I left
