Chippewa Campground Introduce
Are you searching for "camping near me" in the Manteno, Illinois area? Chippewa Campground, located on the Kankakee River Trail in Manteno, IL 60950, presents itself as a "primitive but cozy" option with some unexpected amenities. However, it's crucial to note that one recent review states that "Chippewa Campground is officially closed," which is a significant piece of information for anyone considering a visit. Despite this closure report, we can still describe the campground based on the other available review, keeping in mind its potential inaccessibility.
Environment and Location: Chippewa Campground is situated along the Kankakee River Trail, suggesting a location that could offer scenic views and possibly access to the river for activities, although this is not explicitly detailed in the reviews. The campground is characterized by "beautiful mature trees," indicating a potentially shaded and aesthetically pleasing natural environment. One reviewer mentioned that the grass in some parts looks "really neat" because it's "lush, tall and still fresh," although this was in the context of the campground being closed and possibly not mowed. The presence of mature trees often contributes to a more secluded and natural camping feel, which could be appealing to those looking for a break from more open or manicured campgrounds. The "primitive but cozy" description suggests a balance between a natural, less developed setting and a comfortable, inviting atmosphere.
Services and Amenities: Despite being described as "primitive," Chippewa Campground surprisingly offers electricity at the campsites, which is a significant convenience for charging devices or running small appliances. However, in line with its primitive nature, there are no shower houses. On the other hand, the bathrooms available were reported as "clean and equipped," suggesting that basic sanitary facilities are maintained. Campers need to bring their own firewood, indicating that campfires are likely permitted. For families with children, it was observed that the park area seemed to consist of just swings, which might be a consideration depending on the age and interests of the children. The hosts were described as "very nice," which often contributes positively to the overall camping experience. The availability of electricity in a primitive setting is a notable feature that blends a back-to-nature feel with a touch of modern convenience.
Features and Atmosphere: The key features of Chippewa Campground, based on the positive review, include its beautiful mature trees, the unexpected availability of electricity despite being primitive, and the cleanliness of the bathrooms. The atmosphere is described as "cozy" and "relaxing," suggesting a peaceful and enjoyable environment. The primitive nature implies a focus on the natural surroundings and a less structured camping experience. The location on the Kankakee River Trail could also be a feature for those interested in exploring the trail or the river. However, the review noting the official closure casts a shadow on the current accessibility of these features. If the closure is temporary or if parts of the campground are still accessible, the combination of natural beauty, basic amenities, and a relaxing atmosphere could be appealing.
Points to Consider: The most critical point to consider is the information that Chippewa Campground is "officially closed." This would need to be verified before planning any trip. If it is indeed closed, then the positive aspects mentioned in the other review are currently irrelevant for potential campers. If, however, the closure is not permanent or affects only certain areas, potential visitors should be aware that it is a primitive campground without shower houses and that firewood needs to be brought. The playground for children seems limited to swings. The lush, tall grass mentioned in one review (in the context of closure) might also indicate that the grounds are not regularly maintained if the closure is in effect. Despite these points, the positive review highlights the beauty of the trees, the convenience of electricity, and the cleanliness of the equipped bathrooms.
Promotional Information: For local users seeking "camping near me" with a blend of natural beauty and basic comfort, Chippewa Campground near Manteno, IL, offered a "primitive but cozy" experience. Imagine camping under beautiful mature trees with the convenience of electricity at your site. While it's a primitive setup without showers, the bathrooms were clean and equipped. Located on the Kankakee River Trail, it potentially provided access to scenic trails and the river. The hosts were also noted to be very nice. However, please be aware of the recent report stating that Chippewa Campground is officially closed. Before making any plans, it is strongly recommended to verify the current status of the campground by contacting local authorities or checking for official announcements regarding its operation. If it were to reopen, Chippewa Campground's unique combination of a natural setting with some convenient amenities could make it a worthwhile "camping near me" option for those who appreciate a more rustic experience with a few comforts.
In summary, Chippewa Campground near Manteno, IL, has been described as a "primitive but cozy" location with beautiful mature trees, electricity, and clean bathrooms. Its location on the Kankakee River Trail suggests potential access to outdoor recreation. However, a recent review indicates that the campground is officially closed. Therefore, while it possesses appealing qualities for those seeking a more rustic "camping near me" experience with some conveniences, its current operational status needs to be verified before any plans are made. Please check its status before considering a visit.

Chippewa Campground Reviews
Primitive but cozy! Beautiful mature trees, well maintained campground. Even though it's considered primitive, there is electricity! My sister and I had a nice relaxing time. You do have to bring your own firewood. Because it's primitive, there are no shower houses. However, the bathrooms were clean and equipped. We didn't have children with us, but it looked like the park consisted of just swings. The hosts were very nice!
Oct 16, 2023 · Debbie CherryChippewa Campground is officially closed so I don't know how many stars to give to it. Besides that, some parts of the Campground look really neat. This is partially because the grass is not mowed. It's lush, tall and still fresh.
Jun 06, 2023 · Piotr KalinowskiWent to this campground to camp one night & to view the Suchinshan-Atlas comet. Little did I know it was a Halloween festival night. They had trick-or-treating and a scavenger hunt and a movie among other things. I felt completely safe as a solo woman Camping, because the whole vibe of the campground felt like one big family. The hosts were more than welcoming and helpful. The restrooms aka vault toilet rooms were clean and had no unpleasant smell at all. My fire “ring“ grill area was clean. My picnic table was nice and clean. The electricity worked fine-(I am a tent camper, and I only used the electricity to charge my phone)I loved the campground. Will definitely come back. And I got to see the comet!!
Oct 23, 2024 · Betsy GodwinWe stayed in this section of the Kankakee State Park. The Chippewa campground had a lot of for people who like rustic camping. The center was for people with electrical and water. Our site was very clean. Well kept very nice trails and great access to the river.
Jul 03, 2024 · Jennifer MunozMy family enjoyed camping at the Chippewa campground. The hosts, Dee and her husband were very friendly and helpful. At check in she gave us some tips on where to fish. They checked on us every day. The campground was affordable and exactly as described when we reserved it. We brought our dog and I think he had more fun than we did.
