Equestrian Campground Introduce
For local users in the Kankakee, Illinois, area who are passionate about horses and seeking a unique "camping near me" experience tailored to equestrian needs, the aptly named Equestrian Campground, located in Kankakee, presents a specialized option. Situated at an unspecified address within Kankakee, IL 60901, this campground is clearly oriented towards those who travel with horses, offering specific facilities and access to trails suitable for riding. However, potential visitors should be aware of the rustic nature of the amenities and the strong emphasis on equestrian use.
The environment of the Equestrian Campground is primarily geared towards accommodating horses and their riders. The presence of trails is a significant feature, described by one reviewer as "awesome," suggesting that the area offers ample opportunities for horseback riding. These trails likely wind through the natural landscape of the Kankakee region, providing scenic routes for equestrian exploration. The campground is explicitly identified as a "horse campground," emphasizing its primary purpose and suggesting that the overall atmosphere and infrastructure are designed with horses in mind.
In terms of services and features, the Equestrian Campground offers a more basic, rustic camping experience. One positive aspect highlighted is the cleanliness of the pit toilets, which were noted as "very clean" in a recent review. This indicates that while the facilities may be simple, their maintenance is a priority. Another essential amenity, the water pump, was reported as "fixed and working great as of 5/26/2024," addressing a previous concern about its functionality. This access to non-potable well water, albeit requiring some effort to pump (one reviewer mentioned 40 pumps to start it), is crucial for watering horses and other non-drinking uses.
Recent improvements include the provision of "new picnic tables," suggesting an ongoing effort to maintain and upgrade the campground's basic infrastructure. These would be essential for campers to enjoy meals and other activities at their sites. However, another reviewer noted that "all of the picnic tables are damaged in some way," indicating that while new ones may have been added, the overall condition might still vary across sites.
A significant limitation mentioned in the reviews is the absence of certain standard camping amenities. Specifically, the campground does not offer electric hook-ups or on-site water connections at individual campsites. This reinforces the rustic nature of the facility and requires campers to be self-sufficient in terms of power and water supply for drinking and other needs beyond what the well pump provides. The lack of water at each site necessitates using the communal pump to fill tanks or containers.
For equestrian users, the availability of places to tie horses is a critical feature. One reviewer noted that out of eight spaces, only three had designated tie-up spots for horses. This limited availability could be a significant concern for groups traveling with multiple horses and highlights the importance of checking site availability and features when making plans. The presence of these tie-up locations confirms the campground's intended use for horse camping.
One reviewer strongly advises against visiting the Equestrian Campground without a horse, emphasizing its primary focus. They also caution visitors to be respectful of the horse owners who frequent the campground for riding, reinforcing the idea that the campground community is centered around equestrian activities.
A less positive aspect mentioned in one review is the presence of "graffiti behind the pit toilet," which detracts from the overall environment and suggests a need for better maintenance or oversight in that area.
The reviews do not contain any specific promotional information or special offers. Therefore, local users considering the Equestrian Campground should base their decision on the described environment, services, and features.
In summary, the Equestrian Campground near Kankakee, IL, offers the following key characteristics:
- Primarily designed for equestrian camping: Catering to those traveling with horses and seeking riding trails.
- Access to "awesome" trails: Providing opportunities for horseback riding in the Kankakee area.
- Clean pit toilets: Indicating attention to basic sanitation.
- Working non-potable water pump (as of 5/26/2024): Essential for watering horses and other non-drinking uses.
- New picnic tables: Although the overall condition of picnic tables may vary.
- Limited horse tie-up locations: With only some of the campsites equipped for tethering horses.
- No electric hook-ups or water at individual campsites: Requiring a more self-sufficient camping approach.
- Rustic environment: Emphasizing the natural setting over modern amenities.
For local users specifically looking for "camping near me" that accommodates horses and provides access to equestrian trails, the Equestrian Campground in Kankakee is a dedicated option. However, potential visitors should be prepared for a rustic experience with limited amenities and ensure they have adequate provisions for water and power. It is also advisable to inquire about the availability of horse tie-up locations when booking a site. The positive feedback regarding the trails and the recent functionality of the water pump, along with the clean pit toilets, suggest that the campground offers the essentials for a horse-centric camping trip. However, the lack of individual site amenities and the comments about damaged picnic tables and graffiti indicate areas where improvements could enhance the overall experience. For those without horses, this campground is likely not a suitable choice.

Equestrian Campground Reviews
Pit toliet was very clean. The pump was fixed and working great as of 5/26/2024. New picnic tables were made! Trails were awesome. The grass could have been cut.
May 26, 2024 · Diane Baki-WuethrichWhen it takes 40 pumps to start the non potable well water pump... it's a concern..Pit toilets are clean. Plenty of spaces to camp... this a horse campground... not just a campground.. don't go there without a horse.Don't upset the horse owners who go there to ride their horses. No water... no electric... I was invited as a guest and their was three horses... out of 8 spaces, only 3 has places to tie your horses. All of the picnic tables are damaged in some way... and graffiti behind the pit toilet..
