Collins West Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" that combines the tranquility of backcountry with easy accessibility? Collins West Campground, located in Gruetli-Laager, TN 37339, USA, offers just that. Based on feedback from fellow campers, this campground provides a unique experience, particularly appealing to those new to backpacking or anyone seeking a relatively effortless entry into a more natural camping setting.
One of the most highlighted features of Collins West Campground is its accessibility. Described as a "great backcountry campsite that's only a half mile walk that's almost level," it's an ideal first step for individuals new to backpacking. The easy, almost level trail to the campsites makes it feasible to carry gear without the strenuous effort often associated with backcountry camping. This accessibility also makes it suitable for those who might desire some "creature comforts that meant extra weight," as one reviewer mentioned, without the burden of a long, challenging trek.
In terms of facilities, Collins West Campground offers a pit toilet (outhouse), which many campers appreciate as a more convenient and environmentally conscious option compared to digging a cat hole. While one reviewer noted that there was toilet paper available, they wisely recommended bringing your own as a precaution. It's important to note that, as indicated by another camper, there is no running water at the campground, so you should plan accordingly for your water needs.
The environment and the layout of the campsites are also noteworthy. Campsite #3 is particularly praised for its "great view of the canyon," making it a highly desirable spot. Campsite #2 is mentioned as a decent runner-up. In contrast, Campsite #4 is considered the least desirable because the short spur trail leading to an overlook passes very close to its fire pit, resulting in non-campers frequently walking through the area. This is something to consider when choosing your site, especially if you value privacy around your campfire.
Water availability at Collins West Campground is through a nearby spring. However, one camper recounted an experience where, following a rainy day, the water tasted bad and made them slightly ill, likely due to local runoff. The spring is also described as "seasonal," which further underscores the recommendation to bring your own water. Given the proximity to the parking lot, as mentioned by the reviewer who opted to purchase water from a local grocery, supplementing or exclusively relying on brought water seems like a prudent approach to ensure a comfortable and healthy camping trip.
Beyond the individual campsites, the location of Collins West Campground offers the added benefit of being a fairly easy walk down to Suter Falls. While the return trip involves a bit of an uphill climb, it's described as manageable for children or relatively able adults, suggesting it's a worthwhile excursion for most visitors. This proximity to a natural attraction like Suter Falls enhances the overall appeal of the campground, offering an opportunity for scenic exploration.
Feedback from campers also highlights the cleanliness and maintenance of the campground. One reviewer stated, "Camp ground was clean and well taken care of." This positive aspect contributes significantly to a pleasant camping experience. Knowing that the area is generally clean adds to the appeal of choosing Collins West Campground for your "camping near me" adventure.
Considering the "camping near me" category, Collins West Campground in Gruetli-Laager, TN, presents an attractive option for local users seeking a backcountry feel without a strenuous hike. Its key features include easy access, scenic canyon views from certain campsites, the presence of a pit toilet, and proximity to Suter Falls. However, potential campers should be aware of the lack of running water and the potential issues with the seasonal spring water, making it advisable to bring their own water supply.
For those in the region looking for an introductory backpacking experience or a relatively easy backcountry camping trip with beautiful scenery, Collins West Campground is highly recommended based on the positive reviews regarding its accessibility and the views from some campsites. The cleanliness of the campground is another significant draw. Just be prepared for a more rustic experience in terms of water and bathroom facilities (outhouse only).
If you're a local resident searching for "camping near me" that offers a blend of backcountry charm and ease of access, Collins West Campground is worth considering. The opportunity for a short, level walk to your campsite, coupled with the potential for stunning canyon views and a visit to Suter Falls, makes it a unique offering in the area. Remember to come prepared with your own water and be mindful of the campsite recommendations based on the views and foot traffic to the overlook. Enjoy the natural beauty and the relatively easy adventure that Collins West Campground provides!

Collins West Campground Reviews
What a great backcountry campsite that's only a half mile walk that's almost level. If you're new to backpacking, this is your ideal first and easy step. I chose it because there was snow forecast and I wanted some creature comforts that meant extra weight. There's a pit toilet (outhouse) which is so much better than digging a cat hole. There was TP in there but bring your own just in case.Campsite #3 is the best in my opinion. What a great view of the canyon! #2 is a decent runner-up. #4 is the least desirable because the short spur trail going to the overlook cuts almost directly upon its fire pit, and non-campers want to go there for an easy hike. The spring is close, but when I gathered water for filtering, there had been rain the day before, and the water tasted bad. It was probably from local runoff, but it also made me a bit sick. Being so close to the parking lot, I went to the local grocery and brought back a gallon of water. It may not be that way on an average day, but the spring is described as "seasonal", so I'd recommend just bringing your own.The campsite is also a fairly easy walk down to Suter Falls. It's a bit of a climb coming back up but suitable for children or relatively able adults.Hope you enjoy as much as I did!
