This campground stands out within the "camping near me" category due to its excellent location, proximity to key attractions in the Red River Gorge area, and the interesting setup where you purchase your stay at the on-site coffee house. While it presents some specific considerations regarding accessibility, it offers a rewarding experience for many campers looking to immerse themselves in nature.
When considering "camping near me" in the Red River Gorge, the environment and accessibility to local attractions are often top priorities. Daniel Boone Campground excels in its location, being close to everything the Red River Gorge has to offer. This makes it an ideal basecamp for exploring the area's renowned hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and natural wonders like the Natural Bridge. The campground itself offers desirable natural settings, with some campsites located right by the river, providing a tranquil and picturesque camping experience. Imagine setting up your tent or parking your camper next to the soothing sounds of flowing water. However, it's important to note that the terrain within the campground and the access road might present challenges for some. One reviewer mentioned a "steep and windy hill down that is pretty sketchy pulling a camper," so caution is advised for those with larger vehicles. Additionally, while the riverside spots offer level ground for camping, the location of the immaculate bathrooms at the coffee house requires a walk, which might be a consideration for those with limited mobility or frequent bathroom needs.
Daniel Boone Campground in Red River Gorge offers a range of services and features aimed at providing a comfortable and enjoyable "camping near me" experience, albeit with some unique aspects to be aware of. Based on customer reviews, the campground provides the following:
- Riverside Campsites: A significant draw of this campground is the availability of campsites located right by the river. These spots offer a beautiful and serene camping environment, allowing you to enjoy the natural sounds and views of the water.
- Fire Pits and Picnic Tables: Many campsites, particularly those by the river, are equipped with a fire pit and a picnic table. These are essential amenities for a traditional camping experience, allowing you to have campfires for cooking and socializing, as well as a dedicated space for meals and activities.
- Level Ground at Campsites: Reviewers specifically mentioned having level ground at their riverside campsite, which is crucial for comfortable tent setup and overall enjoyment of the camping area.
- Access to Immaculate Bathrooms at the Coffee House: While the campground does have portapotties, which one reviewer noted were "pretty ripe," a significant advantage is the access to "immaculate" bathrooms located at the coffee house. This provides a much more comfortable and hygienic option for restroom facilities, although it does require a walk from the campsites.
- Purchase Stay at the Coffee House: The unique check-in process where you purchase your stay at the coffee house adds a different element to the camping experience. It also suggests the presence of a social hub where campers can potentially interact and enjoy coffee or other offerings.
- Excellent Location: A recurring theme in the reviews is the "excellent location" of the campground, being close to everything the Red River Gorge area has to offer. This is a major benefit for those wanting to explore the natural attractions and engage in outdoor activities.
- Fantastic Staff: Both the staff at the coffee house and those overseeing the campground are described as "fantastic," indicating a welcoming and helpful service that enhances the overall camping experience.

The availability of immaculate bathrooms at the coffee house is a significant plus, although the distance to them might be a consideration for some. The positive feedback regarding the staff and fellow campers suggests a welcoming and enjoyable community atmosphere. However, potential campers should be aware of the steep and windy access road and the need to walk to the main bathrooms, especially if mobility is a concern.

Daniel Boone Campground in Red River Gorge Reviews
I didnt know what to expect here, as you purchase your stay at the coffee house. But we ended up pretty darn happy. Got a great spot by the river with fire pit and picnic table. Level ground. While the portapotties were pretty ripe, the bathrooms at the coffee house were immaculate and for campground use (and we got our steps in getting up there!). I wouldn't recommend this place if you have limited mobility and need to use the bathroom frequently! But it sure worked for us. So much so we grabbed a second night. Excellent location, close to everything we wanted to be near. The staff at both the coffee house and that look over the campground were fantastic, and the other campers were awesome too. We will be back!
Apr 28, 2022 · Maria SolekWe stayed here for a long weekend and had a good time. Great location! But be careful driving in, there is a steep and windy hill down that is pretty sketchy pulling a camper. Other than that we loved being able to walk up to the coffee shop and enjoyed hanging out by the river!
Jul 11, 2022 · Sydney ShallenbergerThe grass had not been cut and was very long. No showers or restrooms at the campsite. The coffee shop was nice, and the staff was friendly. Prices were not listed on the menu, and they were a little pricey for a small coffee shop.
Jul 18, 2023 · Karen Dahnke JorgensenAt $3/person for camping you get what you pay for.1. Half the sites with electric didn't work. We had to take our extension cord to 3 different sites before finding one that worked. We usually don't get electric sites, but since it was below freezing we needed electric for our heated blanket. I know you can't expect to much for $3/person but if it says electric, it's not unreasonably to have expectations that it works.2. No bathrooms in the campground. You have to walk uphill to the coffee shop to use one of their 2 bathrooms that is shared between the campground, coffee and gift shop. I didn't see any Porta potties, however that's maybe because it's off season, or I simply didn't see them.3. It appears there are several people living there full time, in Rvs, and tiny homes. Although this isn't a negative thing it creates a different atmosphere. This is not the worst campground, we never felt unsafe, but I would go elsewhere unless your on a budget.
Nov 24, 2022 · Laura HenkeThe coffee shop camp definitely met our needs for our short trip to Red River Gorge. We went on a weekend and our neighbors were respectful enough. The "highway" is close so there will be noise but you get used to it. Lots of nice sites to choose from first come first serve.
