Dukes Forest Campground Introduce
Seeking a "camping near me" experience in the vicinity of the beautiful Lake Murray in Oklahoma, but perhaps looking for a slightly less crowded atmosphere? Dukes Forest Campground offers a potentially appealing option for both tent and RV campers. While acknowledged by some as being in need of future upgrades as part of the state park system, it currently provides a clean and functional camping environment managed by friendly staff. If you value a bit more separation from other campers and appreciate the convenience of nearby Lake Murray access, Dukes Forest Campground might be worth considering for your next outdoor adventure.
The Environment: A Forest Setting Near a Renowned Lake
Dukes Forest Campground is situated in a forest setting, as its name suggests. While it's important to note, as pointed out by a recent visitor, that the campground isn't directly on the water's edge of Lake Murray, the lake itself is undoubtedly a significant draw to the area. Lake Murray is widely regarded as a wonderful destination, offering a plethora of recreational activities. Campers at Dukes Forest can still easily access and enjoy the lake's amenities, even if a short drive or walk might be involved.
The campground's slightly inland location, away from the immediate bustle of the lakefront, can be seen as a benefit for those seeking a more tranquil and less congested camping experience. One visitor specifically chose Dukes Forest hoping to avoid the larger crowds present at other campgrounds around Lake Murray during a non-holiday weekend. This suggests that Dukes Forest offers a quieter alternative for those who prioritize a more secluded feel during their camping trip.
The presence of mature trees within the forest setting likely provides shade and a natural ambiance to the campsites. While not explicitly detailed, a forest campground typically offers a more rustic and natural environment compared to open, lakeside campgrounds. This can be particularly appealing to tent campers who appreciate the feeling of being immersed in nature.
Services and Features: Balancing Functionality with Anticipated Upgrades
Based on the reviews, Dukes Forest Campground offers a range of essential services to accommodate both tent and RV campers. For tent campers, while the sites themselves are on a first-come-first-serve basis, they are located approximately 100 yards from the bathrooms. One camper who stayed at an RV spot noted that their location provided closer proximity to the restrooms, suggesting some variability in the distance depending on the chosen site.
RV campers benefit from reservable sites, offering the security of having a designated spot upon arrival. The review indicates that at least some RV spots are equipped with electricity and water hookups, which is a significant convenience for those traveling with recreational vehicles. However, it's important to note that the availability of full hookups (including sewer) is not explicitly mentioned and may vary.
The campground is reported to be kept "clean and in working order" by the management, which is a positive aspect for all visitors. This indicates a commitment to maintaining a basic level of cleanliness and functionality within the campground. However, one long-term user, who hosts large camps there annually, expresses a continued hope for upgrades to the state park facilities, suggesting that while functional, some aspects may be dated or lacking modern amenities.
One specific amenity mentioned is the presence of cement picnic tables at the campsites. While durable, one visitor found them to be "pretty uncomfortable," which is a minor point to consider for those planning to spend significant time at their picnic table.
The bathrooms are described as "pretty good," which is reassuring for campers who value clean restroom facilities. However, one suggestion was made for more frequent cleaning to address the presence of spiders and other insects, indicating that while generally acceptable, there might be room for improvement in the frequency of cleaning.
Accessibility and Site Characteristics
The first-come-first-serve nature of the tent camping sites means that availability can vary, particularly during peak season or weekends. Arriving early is generally recommended to secure a desired tent site. In contrast, the ability to reserve RV spots offers a greater degree of certainty for RV travelers.
One interesting observation was that some RV sites presented challenges in finding suitable ground for pitching a tent. This suggests that while RV-designated, the terrain might not always be ideal for those who might occasionally want to set up a tent alongside their RV or for visitors who might have initially booked an RV site for the convenience of hookups while primarily tent camping.
The review also highlights that the campground offers "some slight separation from others," which can be a significant draw for campers who value privacy and a less communal camping experience. If you prefer a site where you're not in close proximity to numerous other campers, Dukes Forest might provide that desired spacing.
Management and Overall Impression
The people managing Dukes Forest Campground are described as "nice," contributing to a positive overall experience. Friendly and helpful staff can significantly enhance a camping trip, making visitors feel welcome and assisting with any needs or questions.
Despite the acknowledged need for potential upgrades, the overall impression from the reviews is that Dukes Forest Campground provides a decent and functional camping option near the popular Lake Murray. Its less crowded atmosphere, reservable RV sites with hookups, and first-come-first-serve tent sites in a forest setting offer a different kind of camping experience compared to the potentially busier lakeside campgrounds.

Dukes Forest Campground Reviews
Lake Murray is wonderful. Duke's Forest is one of the last campgrounds in need of an upgrade for the state park. We're hopeful that the state will do the upgrade soon. We host two huge camps per year here. They keep it clean and in working order ... Still hoping for upgrades 🤠
Apr 24, 2025 · Adam R. ReeseWent here at the end of May and during a non-holiday weekend hoping to beat the heat and the crowds. We had good weather though it was a bit hot during the day and no wind. Duke's was a nice campground. It didn't have as many people as the other campgrounds around Lake Murray had, but it wasn't really close to the water. We tent camp but spent our stay at an RV spot. Having electricity and water nearby was nice. Tent camping sites were about 100yrds from bathrooms. Our site was a bit closer but not too close. Tent sites are first come first serve. RV spots as well but you can reserve them. Sites were fairly clean. Picnic tables are cement and pretty uncomfortable. Some RV sites were challenging to find places for a tent. If you like being away from people, with some slight separation from others, this was nice. The people managing the location were nice. Bathrooms were pretty good though it would have been nice if they would use a broom once in a while to clear out the spiders and other insects. Lake Murray is a nice place to visit. Hoping to return again!
Jun 15, 2019 · Chris BeckerWe love this place. We held our family reunion here and had 14 spots reserved. The campground is beautiful. There are walking trails that go down to the lake. There is a nice kids playground for the kiddoes and a nice backdrop for baseball or in our case, kickball. The bathhouse is typical of ml ost campgrounds (stinky and always wet). The rv spots are plenty long enough for larger rvs and even room for toads. Each spot has a picnic table, 30 amp service and water. The rv dump station is close enough in case you have to use a portable dump buggy. All in all we gave this place a strong 5 out of 5.
Jul 10, 2019 · Bryan DubeanskyI made my second visit to this campsite in the last year. It's a great place and we'll maintained.
Oct 21, 2024 · Russell JohnsonGreat place needs work on rds restrooms and sites. Over all had a good time, can reserve the park for private events.
