Durham Leisure Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking "camping near me" in the Durham, Maine area, Durham Leisure Campground, located at 24 Leisure Ln, Durham, ME 04222, USA, is one option to consider. However, it is crucial to approach this campground with caution due to significant negative feedback from recent customers regarding their experiences. While it is listed as a campground, potential visitors should be aware of serious concerns raised about the management, billing practices, and overall treatment of guests. For contact, the campground can be reached at (207) 353-5535 or their mobile number +1 207-353-5535.
Information regarding the specific environment of Durham Leisure Campground is limited in the provided reviews, as the focus of the feedback is overwhelmingly negative concerning the management and operational aspects. One review does mention a "nice pool," suggesting that the campground may offer some recreational amenities. However, the lack of positive comments about the natural surroundings or the ambiance makes it difficult to provide an objective description of the environment. Potential visitors should seek additional information from other sources or directly from the campground (keeping in mind the reported customer service issues) to understand the setting and whether it aligns with their preferences for a camping environment.
The services offered at Durham Leisure Campground are also not detailed in a positive light by the available reviews. One reviewer who paid monthly for a site reported being "overcharged on electricity" upon arrival. Another significant issue raised was the "lack of water," which forced the reviewer to leave. This suggests potential unreliability in essential services. The negative feedback also indicates a lack of willingness from the owner to provide compensation or address concerns regarding the lack of water, with the owner reportedly laughing and suggesting the camper find somewhere else to go. Furthermore, there are claims that the owners do not respect self-sufficient campers and harbor negative attitudes towards specific groups, such as traveling nurses and single pregnant individuals. While a "nice pool" is mentioned, the overall impression of the services is marred by allegations of unfair billing, unreliable utilities, and poor customer service. Potential long-term or even short-term campers should carefully consider these reported issues regarding the dependability of services at Durham Leisure Campground.
The features of Durham Leisure Campground, based on the severely critical reviews, are overshadowed by significant negative experiences. The only positively mentioned feature is a "nice pool." However, this single amenity is contrasted with serious allegations of unethical and discriminatory behavior by the campground owners. One former camper who stayed for nearly a year reported a positive initial interaction that deteriorated after the owners allegedly perceived her as "different" due to being pregnant and single. She claims they subjected her to harassment and forced her to leave months before she intended, leading to significant financial loss and emotional distress. This account also mentions an "incredibly creepy library full of cultish religious material," which, while subjective, is a notable and unusual feature that might be concerning to some visitors. The lack of respect for self-sufficient campers and the reported prejudice against certain groups are critical features that prospective campers must be aware of. The overcharging on electricity and the failure to provide essential water services, coupled with a dismissive attitude from the owner, further detract from any potential positive features the campground might offer. Potential visitors should weigh the presence of a pool against these serious allegations of mismanagement and mistreatment.
Considering the "camping near me" category, Durham Leisure Campground, based on the available recent reviews, appears to be a risky choice for local campers. While it is geographically located in Durham, Maine, the overwhelming negative feedback regarding its management practices, unreliable essential services, and alleged discriminatory behavior strongly suggests that local users should exercise extreme caution. The core expectation of a campground is to provide a safe and hospitable environment with basic utilities. The reviews indicate significant failures in these areas, coupled with hostile interactions with the owners. Local campers seeking a peaceful and reliable camping experience in the vicinity might be better served by exploring alternative campgrounds in the region that have more positive and consistent feedback regarding their management and services.
Regarding promotional information, the provided data does not include any details about promotions or special offers. Given the severity of the negative reviews, it is unlikely that potential campers would be swayed by any standard promotional efforts without addressing the fundamental issues raised by former guests. The lack of positive feedback and the serious allegations of mistreatment and service failures act as a strong deterrent. Any promotional material should be viewed with skepticism in light of the reported experiences. It would be prudent for anyone considering Durham Leisure Campground to seek further, unbiased information from multiple sources and to carefully weigh the risks associated with the issues highlighted in the provided reviews before making a booking.
The two reviews provided offer a stark and disturbing picture of Durham Leisure Campground. Both accounts detail significant negative experiences directly attributed to the campground owners and their management practices. The allegations range from financial exploitation (overcharging, retaining deposits despite lack of essential services) to discriminatory behavior and harassment. The first review succinctly labels the campground as a "money grab" and advises others not to waste their time. The second review provides a more detailed and deeply concerning narrative of mistreatment based on personal circumstances, culminating in forced departure and significant personal and financial hardship. The mention of a "creepy library" further adds to the unsettling atmosphere described by this former camper. These are not isolated complaints about minor inconveniences; they are serious accusations of unethical and harmful conduct by the campground owners.
In conclusion, while Durham Leisure Campground is located in Durham, Maine, and thus falls under the "camping near me" category for local residents, the information gleaned from recent customer reviews paints a deeply troubling picture. Potential visitors must be aware of the serious allegations regarding overcharging, failure to provide essential services like water, dismissive and hostile behavior from the owners, and even discriminatory practices. The single positive mention of a "nice pool" is insufficient to outweigh the significant negative experiences reported. It is strongly recommended that local campers seeking a reliable, safe, and respectful camping experience thoroughly investigate these issues and consider alternative campgrounds in the Durham, Maine area that have a more positive and trustworthy reputation. Proceeding with a booking at Durham Leisure Campground based solely on its location would be ill-advised without further, verifiable assurances of improved management and ethical treatment of guests.

Durham Leisure Campground Reviews
It’s just a money grab. Don’t waste your time.I paid monthly for site 19.They overcharged on electricity when i showed up and kept my taxes/deposit when we had to leave due to lack of water.I asked for some compensation due to lack of water. Owner laughed and said “you can find somewhere else to go”.Neither of the owners will respect you if you’re self sufficient. They do not like traveling nurses!
Sep 12, 2024 · Leo LybargerAt first, they are super nice. But once they start to suspect that you are "different" the campground owners will begin to treat you differently. I was there for 1 winter season and the spring and summer, so, less than one year. Other campers had been there MUCH longer. I intended to stay 2 or 3 more seasons, and upgraded my camper. But because I was pregnant and single, they started to harass me and forced me to leave, months before I was ready to purchase land for my camper home. This forced me to lose several thousand dollars doing a short sale and finding any home I could, 7 months pregnant, scared and stressed. All I wanted was a peaceful postpartum experience in nature where my dog could enjoy the outdoors. My family dynamic was none of their business. I wasn't planning on staying that much longer. Especially after discovering the incredibly creepy library full of cultush religious material. Nice pool though. Great spot to visit very briefly but don't stay more than one season unless you're related to them or you're a Christian.
Sep 24, 2023 · Venita TashlitskyGreat place to stay if you want peace and quiet. They were very accommodating to our day of request to stay the weekend. It is not a big campground but it is very well taken care of. The bathrooms & showers look new and were very clean. The people we came across while there were very friendly as well. I would definitely come back.
Apr 23, 2023 · VanessaVery nice stuff here. We did tour the campground but unfortunately we decided not to stay because we wouldn't be able to get our satellite dish to work. Beautiful campground I would recommend to anybody. Lots of shade.
Apr 30, 2024 · Diane LWe had an AMAZING experience here! We traveled to this campground for our first trip with our new RV. This campground is quiet and clean. Bathroom and shower facilities are beyond clean. Our daughter (5 years old) enjoyed loved the salt water pool, the playground, and kid area in the office.Sites are a combination of back in and pull through and have decent privacy between them. Qwenn, the owener, put us in a pull through site for our first trip and it was big and level. Qwenn is also so sweet and always around the campground.
