Be prepared for the overwhelming swarms of mosquitoes!!! No matter how much DEET you apply or precautionary measures you take, they are savage and will eat you alive! Everyone in our 8 party group left with at least twenty or more bites and are absolutely miserable! 😫 It’s nothing the camp hosts can control but worth knowing before you go! Another safety issue you should know about are the rattlesnakes! We were not expecting to see them there however did! Two rattle snakes were caught and killed in the high grassy area right near the water, where the small kids and dogs were playing. One was very large and mature, the other just a baby who hadn’t developed its rattler yet. That being said — the camp hosts were great! Very friendly and easy going! Came by often enough but not hovering. They cleaned and stocked the bathrooms twice a day every day. They also took out the trashes so we never had to deal with over flowing trash receptacles. Unfortunately this campground is in-fact very dusty! That very fine dirty dust that gets EVERYWHERE! Think of the Playa dust haha There isn’t any running water, the bathrooms are the hole in the ground kind and no matter how clean, still stink pretty bad, especially in the heat of the day! The campsites are big, spacious, lots of parking and room to pitch your tents! However they only come with fire rings so bring everything else (tables/chairs) you might need! This campsite doesn’t have dumpsters located through out, so you’ll have to leave your trash by the bathroom and the kind camp hosts come by and grab it during their checks. I believe there are only 8 campsites and they fill up quick, leaving a decent amount of traffic all hours of the day/night kicking up dust as they drive by frustrated on their ways out. There is a very large turn around spot at the end making it convenient for big trailers and RV’s to still be able to turn around and leave. Due to the size of the campsites and minimal number over all, you receive decent privacy, often only seeing your neighbors on the way to the bathroom. The lake appears to be high. This was our first time so we don’t have much to go off of. There are small areas of beach near every two campsites that you’ll end up sharing. It’s no biggie though, everyone we encountered was very pleasant to be around. The water was cool. Not too cold yet still cool enough to keep us comfortable during the heat of the day (I think it got to 100). It’s the ideal lake for kayaking/paddle boarding/swimming/ fishing/ etc. The entire time we were there we only barely felt a breeze (we were hoping for one!) leaving the lake like glass! There were a few boats with wake-boarders/ tubers and jet skis but mostly just passing through on their way somewhere else. In the morning there will be decent amount of moss/debris on the water but as the day goes on it goes away and you can wade in to swim. It’s a very dog friendly place, by that I mean the camp host didn’t mind us letting our dogs off leash to play in the water with us. There is absolutely no cell service and in order to pay you’ll need exact change as you’ll need to leave it in an envelope at the beginning of the road/campground. The host isn’t selling wood and there isn’t any around to collect so bring your own! Overall the area is pretty. The campgrounds are easily accessible by sedan cars. The sites are large and the camp hosts were very pleasant! Unfortunately, I don’t think we will be back. We are too traumatized by all of our bites! 😅 - Amanda Pulley
Dusty Campground Overview Intro Photos Location Reviews

Dusty Campground Introduce

For local users seeking "camping near me" in the Burney area, Dusty Campground, located in Burney, CA 96013, USA, reachable at (530) 335-2777 or +1 530-335-2777, presents a location with both notable positives and significant challenges, based on recent customer feedback. Potential visitors should carefully consider these aspects before planning a trip.

One of the most prominent issues highlighted by multiple reviewers is the overwhelming presence of mosquitoes. One group described them as "savage" and reported receiving twenty or more bites per person despite using DEET and taking precautions, leading to a "miserable" experience. This suggests that during certain times of the year, particularly warmer months, the mosquito population at Dusty Campground can be exceptionally high, potentially detracting significantly from the enjoyment of the outdoors. This is acknowledged as something the camp hosts cannot control but is crucial information for prospective campers.

Another significant safety concern raised by a visitor is the presence of rattlesnakes. Two rattlesnakes, one large and mature and another juvenile, were reportedly found and killed in a high grassy area near the water where children and dogs were playing. This unexpected presence of venomous snakes poses a potential risk to both humans and pets, requiring extra vigilance, especially in areas with tall grass or near the water's edge. Campers should be aware of this potential hazard and take appropriate safety measures.

Despite these environmental challenges, the camp hosts at Dusty Campground receive high praise. They are described as "great," "very friendly," and "easy going," making regular rounds without being intrusive. Their services include cleaning and stocking the bathrooms twice daily and managing the trash, ensuring that overflowing receptacles are not an issue. This positive interaction with the campground staff is a notable aspect of the visitor experience.

True to its name, Dusty Campground is reported to be "very dusty," with a fine dust that permeates everything, likened to the dust at the Playa. This can affect comfort and require extra effort in keeping belongings clean. Additionally, the campground does not have running water. The bathroom facilities are described as "hole in the ground kind" (pit toilets), which, despite being cleaned regularly, are noted to have a strong odor, particularly in the heat of the day. Campers should come prepared for these basic and potentially less comfortable sanitation arrangements.

The campsites themselves are described as "big" and "spacious," offering plenty of parking and room for pitching tents. However, they are basic, equipped only with fire rings. Campers need to bring all other necessities, such as tables and chairs. There are no dumpsters located throughout the campground; instead, campers leave their trash by the bathroom for the camp hosts to collect. The campground is relatively small, with only around eight campsites, which tend to fill up quickly. This can lead to considerable traffic at all hours as people arrive and, in some cases, leave due to the conditions, further contributing to the dust.

Despite the limited number of campsites, the layout offers "decent privacy," with neighbors often only encountered on the way to the bathroom. The campground features a "very large turn around spot at the end," making it convenient for large trailers and RVs to maneuver.

Dusty Campground provides easy access to Lake Britton, which is described as "beautiful." The lake level appeared high at the time of one review. Near every two campsites, there are small beach areas that are shared among campers, with interactions reported as pleasant. The water temperature was described as cool and refreshing during hot weather (around 100 degrees Fahrenheit), making it suitable for various water activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, and fishing. While some moss and debris might be present in the morning, it tends to dissipate as the day goes on.

Lake Britton is also noted to have a variety of fish, including bass, trout, crappie, and bluegill, attracting boaters, skiers, jet skiers, kayakers, SUP paddlers, and canoeists, with "plenty of room for everyone." Additionally, Dusty Campground is located within two miles of Burney Falls, a significant natural attraction in the area, offering an opportunity for sightseeing.

Dusty Campground is reported to be "very dog friendly," with the camp hosts apparently allowing dogs to be off-leash to play in the water. However, it's important to note that there is absolutely no cell service at the campground. Payment for camping requires exact change, which needs to be placed in an envelope at the entrance of the campground. Campers also need to bring their own firewood, as the host does not sell it, and there is no wood available for collection.

Overall, while the area surrounding Dusty Campground is described as "pretty" and the campsites are easily accessible by sedan cars, the significant issues with mosquitoes and the potential presence of rattlesnakes are major drawbacks. The lack of running water and the use of pit toilets, along with the pervasive dust, contribute to a more primitive camping experience. While the camp hosts are commended for their service and the access to the beautiful Lake Britton and nearby Burney Falls are appealing, the environmental challenges might outweigh the positives for some campers.

There is no specific promotional information available for Dusty Campground in the provided reviews. For local users searching for "camping near me," the primary appeal might be its proximity to Lake Britton and Burney Falls, along with the spacious campsites and dog-friendly policy. However, potential visitors must be fully aware of and prepared for the severe mosquito problem, the risk of encountering rattlesnakes, the lack of running water and pit toilets, and the dusty conditions. Contacting the provided phone number might yield more up-to-date information on current conditions and any potential advisories regarding insects or wildlife.

In conclusion, Dusty Campground offers a mixed bag for local campers. While it boasts a beautiful location near Lake Britton and Burney Falls, spacious campsites, and friendly camp hosts, the overwhelming mosquito swarms, potential rattlesnake encounters, lack of running water, pit toilets, and dusty environment are significant deterrents. Local users seeking "camping near me" should carefully weigh these factors and consider their tolerance for these conditions before choosing to stay at Dusty Campground. Preparation for insects and potential wildlife is essential, and bringing an adequate water supply is a must.
