East Kennedy Creek Camp Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts seeking "camping near me" with a focus on privacy and a less buggy environment, East Kennedy Creek Camp, located along the Superior Hiking Trail near Silver Bay, MN 55614, USA, offers an appealing option. Situated within the beautiful landscape of the North Shore of Lake Superior, this campsite caters primarily to tent campers and backpackers exploring the renowned Superior Hiking Trail. You can reach out for more information by calling (218) 834-2700 or +1 218-834-2700.
The environment of East Kennedy Creek Camp is characterized by its woodland setting, located a decent distance off the main Superior Hiking Trail. This separation contributes to a quieter and more private camping experience, as noted by reviewers who appreciated being far enough from the trail to maintain solitude. One of the key environmental considerations mentioned is the proximity to water. The campsite is "close enough, but far enough from the water that it is not buggy here," suggesting a comfortable environment regarding insects, a significant factor for many campers, especially during warmer months in Minnesota. The presence of "large enough trees for hammocks" indicates a mature forest canopy, offering shade and opportunities for hammock camping, a popular way to relax in the wilderness. The spur trail leading to the campsites is described as "long," with tent pads carved out along it, further enhancing the sense of privacy for each site.
The services and features at East Kennedy Creek Camp are geared towards backcountry tent camping. Based on the customer reviews, these include:
- Multiple tent pads located along the spur trail, providing designated and likely relatively flat areas for setting up tents. The distribution of these pads along the spur also increases privacy between different camping groups.
- Availability of "large enough trees for hammocks," catering to those who prefer hammock camping.
- A location that is a "nice distance from water," which, while providing access to Kennedy Creek (or potentially an alternative source), also helps in reducing insect presence at the campsites.
- Campsites that are a "reasonable distance from each other for privacy," enhancing the feeling of seclusion for individual groups.
- The general cleanliness of the site was noted positively by one reviewer.
However, it's crucial to note a potential limitation regarding water access. One review mentions that "Kennedy Creek is unreliable in dry conditions or the end of summer/fall." This is a significant consideration for backpackers relying on natural water sources. The review also offers a helpful tip: "you can get water from another source if you follow the Wolf Ridge ELC trail a short distance." This suggests that while Kennedy Creek might not always be a reliable source, an alternative water supply exists nearby, though it requires a bit of extra travel. Campers should plan accordingly, especially during drier periods, and consider carrying extra water or a reliable water filtration/purification system.
The features of East Kennedy Creek Camp that stand out are its emphasis on privacy, the less buggy environment due to its distance from the immediate water source, and the suitability for both tent and hammock camping. The carved-out tent pads along the spur trail are a unique feature that contributes to both organization and individual campsite seclusion. The proximity to the Superior Hiking Trail makes it an ideal stop for those hiking the trail. The potential unreliability of Kennedy Creek as a water source is also a key feature to be aware of, prompting campers to consider the alternative water source near the Wolf Ridge ELC trail.
Regarding promotional information, as East Kennedy Creek Camp is a primitive campsite along a public hiking trail, there are typically no fees or specific promotions. Camping at such sites is generally free on a first-come, first-served basis. However, it is always advisable to check for any regulations or permit requirements associated with camping on the Superior Hiking Trail through the Superior Hiking Trail Association or the relevant land management authorities. They would have the most up-to-date information on any rules or guidelines for using these backcountry campsites.
In conclusion, East Kennedy Creek Camp offers a more private and less buggy "camping near me" experience along the Superior Hiking Trail near Silver Bay, Minnesota. Its key advantages include the secluded tent pads, suitability for hammock camping, and its distance from the immediate water, which helps with insect levels. However, potential campers should be aware of the potential unreliability of Kennedy Creek as a water source, especially during dry periods, and consider utilizing the alternative source near the Wolf Ridge ELC trail. If you value privacy and a more tranquil backcountry camping experience while hiking the Superior Hiking Trail, East Kennedy Creek Camp is a noteworthy option to consider.

East Kennedy Creek Camp Reviews
Close enough, but far enough from the water that it is not buggy here. The spur is long but there are tent pads carved out along it which increases privacy and I found to be nice. Seemed to be large enough trees for hammocks.Note that Kennedy Creek is unreliable in dry conditions or the end of summer/fall. I have heard that you can get water from another source if you follow the Wolf Ridge ELC trail a short distance.
