Leskinen Creek Camp Introduce
For local residents seeking "camping near me" along the renowned Superior Hiking Trail in Minnesota, Leskinen Creek Camp, situated near Finland, offers a backcountry experience with both advantages and notable drawbacks. Located at Superior Hiking Trail, Finland, MN 55603, USA, this campsite provides a place to rest for hikers and backpackers exploring the wilderness.
Based on feedback from individuals who have stayed at Leskinen Creek Camp, the site presents a mixed bag of features. On the positive side, one reviewer describes it as a "big clear campsite" with a "fireplace," which is generally considered a desirable amenity for campfires and potentially cooking. The spaciousness suggests that the site might be suitable for larger groups or those who appreciate having ample room to set up their tents and gear.
Another potentially significant advantage mentioned in the reviews is the presence of a "bear hanging chord already installed." This is a valuable feature for safety in bear country, allowing campers to hang their food and scented items away from their sleeping area to prevent attracting bears. One reviewer clarifies that while the chord is present, campers need to bring their own cable for the pulley system. Another reviewer, however, did not notice the bear cable during their visit, possibly due to the darkness of the site, indicating that its visibility might be an issue or its presence not consistently guaranteed.
Furthermore, one review notes that the campsite is "surprisingly large" with "many decent tent pads," which contradicts the initial impression of potentially limited space. This suggests that while some areas might have uneven terrain, there are designated or naturally occurring flat spots suitable for tents. The site is also described as "decent for hammocks," offering an alternative sleeping arrangement for those who prefer it and have the necessary equipment.
However, the reviews also highlight several significant negative aspects of Leskinen Creek Camp that local users should be aware of when considering it for their "camping near me" needs. A recurring and prominent issue is the overwhelming presence of mosquitoes. One reviewer explicitly states that it is a "mosquito haven" and that they "do not take a break." Another describes the site as "buggy," reinforcing the likelihood of encountering a high concentration of biting insects. This could significantly impact the comfort and enjoyment of the camping experience, especially during warmer months.
Another major concern raised by a camper is the condition and location of the "creek" that gives the campsite its name. One review points out that the "creek" was merely a "puddle that wasn't moving" and was located about a "quarter mile away from the actual campsite." This is a significant discrepancy, as campers might expect a reliable water source to be nearby. The stagnant nature of the puddle also raises concerns about its suitability as a water source, even with purification. Another reviewer echoes this, stating that "the creek to the north of the site is very unreliable." This lack of a dependable water source is a critical factor to consider, as campers will need to carry in all the water they require.
Adding to the potential downsides, one reviewer reported a noise disturbance from a nearby road. They mentioned hearing a car with "extremely loud music" close by not long after dark, which persisted for at least 1.5 hours. This suggests that the tranquility of the wilderness experience at Leskinen Creek Camp could be compromised by noise pollution from external sources, potentially affecting sleep and overall enjoyment.
The description of the site as "dark" and "damp" by one reviewer further paints a picture of the environment. A dark campsite might be less appealing to some, potentially feeling more isolated or making navigation at night more challenging. A damp environment could contribute to the mosquito problem and might make the overall camping experience less comfortable, especially in terms of ground conditions and moisture levels.
Considering the "camping near me" category, Leskinen Creek Camp presents a mixed proposition. While it offers a large campsite with a fireplace and the potential for bear safety with a provided cable, the significant issues with mosquitoes, an unreliable and distant creek, and potential noise disturbances are crucial factors to weigh. For local users prioritizing a bug-free environment and a reliable water source, Leskinen Creek Camp might not be the ideal choice.
Promotional aspects are limited given the predominantly negative feedback regarding insects and the water situation. However, the size of the campsite and the presence of a bear hanging chord could be seen as positive features for larger groups concerned about bear safety. The mention of decent tent pads and suitability for hammocks might also attract certain types of campers. Ultimately, any promotional effort would need to honestly address the known drawbacks.
For local users considering Leskinen Creek Camp despite the warnings, thorough preparation is essential. Bringing ample insect repellent and protective clothing is a must. Since the creek is unreliable and distant, carrying an adequate supply of water for the entire trip is crucial. Additionally, being prepared for a potentially dark and damp environment might involve bringing extra lighting and ensuring tent waterproofing. Earplugs might be advisable in case of further noise disturbances from the nearby road.
In conclusion, Leskinen Creek Camp along the Superior Hiking Trail near Finland, MN, offers a spacious campsite with a fireplace and a bear hanging chord. However, potential visitors should be fully aware of the significant challenges posed by an abundance of mosquitoes, an unreliable and distant creek, and the possibility of noise pollution. While it might serve as a functional overnight stop for hikers on the trail, local users seeking a more comfortable and amenity-rich "camping near me" experience might want to explore alternative options.

Leskinen Creek Camp Reviews
Big clear campsite and fireplace, which is nice. However, this is mosquito haven, they do not take a break. Additionally the "creek" was a puddle that wasn't moving and was about a quarter mile away from the actual campsite. On the plus side, they have a bear hanging chord already installed, being your own cable for a pulley though. It is directly across from the latrine trail after you finish your business
Sep 22, 2024 · Christopher OswaldSurprisingly large site with many decent tent pads. Decent for hammocks as well. However the site is dark, buggy, damp. The creek to the north of the site is very unreliable. There must be a back road nearby that some teenagers use, because a car with extremely loud music could be heard close by not long after dark and hung out for at least 1.5 hours blaring music.I see references to a bear cable in the other reviews, but I did not notice one when I was there. Perhaps because it was a dark site and not as easy to spot. I use a bear canister so I didn't need it anyway, but I usually notice them as not many campsites on the SHT seem to have them.
Aug 28, 2023 · TammyLimited access to water aside from Leskinen creek which you will want very reliable purification to use. A very spacious camp however, which could accommodate multiple groups. Has simple latrine and bear cable
May 12, 2021 · Joseph SlikerLots of spots for Hammocks and tents, can feel kind of dark and wet depending on the weather, Leskinen Creek is unreliable water if it has been dry.
Sep 19, 2024 · Eric NistlerIt a nice camp site near Finley mn. I walked into town from there. A line was up to hang your bear rope. I don't remember if water was near the camp site but good water was available a short distance from a river
