South Sonju Lake Camp Introduce
For local adventurers seeking exceptional "camping near me" in the heart of Minnesota's natural beauty, South Sonju Lake Camp presents an inviting option. Situated along the renowned Superior Hiking Trail near Finland, MN, this campground offers a unique lakeside experience, particularly noted for its proximity to the picturesque Lilly's Island on Sonju Lake.
Located at Superior Hiking Trail, Finland, MN 55603, USA, South Sonju Lake Camp provides a convenient escape into nature. Its location along the Superior Hiking Trail makes it easily accessible for hikers and backpackers exploring this iconic route. The trail offers a diverse range of landscapes, from rocky cliffs to serene forests, all within reach of the campsite.
Based on feedback from fellow campers, South Sonju Lake Camp is considered a preferable spot compared to the nearby North Sonju Lake Camp, particularly praised for its scenery. The highlight appears to be its close proximity to Lilly's Island, described as being about 20 yards down the trail. This suggests easy access to the island, likely offering opportunities for exploration, photography, and enjoying the lake views.
The reviews also highlight the spaciousness of the campsite. One camper mentioned it as a "huge site" capable of accommodating multiple tents, successfully hosting a group of 15 people with 5 tents. This makes South Sonju Lake Camp an excellent choice for large groups of friends or families looking to camp together. The ample space ensures comfort and allows for various camping setups.
Water access is another significant advantage of South Sonju Lake Camp. The "great water access" mentioned in a review implies easy entry to Sonju Lake, perfect for activities such as swimming, fishing (if permitted and with appropriate licenses), or simply enjoying the tranquil waterside environment. The presence of a lake enhances the camping experience, offering opportunities for relaxation and recreation.
In terms of amenities, one notable mention is the presence of a "camp saw." While seemingly a minor detail, having a tool like a camp saw available can be useful for managing firewood (if campfires are allowed and wood is available) and other campsite tasks. It suggests a degree of preparedness at the site for basic camping needs.
Accessibility appears to be another positive aspect of South Sonju Lake Camp. One reviewer noted an "easy hike from the Sonju road parking lot," indicating that reaching the campsite is relatively straightforward. This ease of access can be particularly appealing to those who prefer a shorter trek to their camping destination, especially when carrying gear.
While the scenery receives high praise, one reviewer noted potential limitations regarding "tent/hammock locations," suggesting that prime spots might be limited. This implies that arriving early to secure the best camping areas is advisable, especially during peak season or on weekends. Campers might need to be prepared to be flexible with their setup depending on availability.
Considering the "camping near me" category, South Sonju Lake Camp stands out due to its lakeside location and suitability for group camping. The proximity to Lilly's Island adds a unique scenic element, making it more than just a place to pitch a tent. It's a gateway to exploring a beautiful lake environment and enjoying the natural surroundings.
Promotional information isn't explicitly provided, but the positive reviews themselves act as a form of promotion. The emphasis on scenery, large site capacity, great water access, and easy access from the parking lot are all compelling reasons for local campers to consider South Sonju Lake Camp for their next outdoor adventure. The mention of Lilly's Island as a nearby attraction further enhances its appeal.
For those planning a trip to South Sonju Lake Camp, it's recommended to consult detailed maps of the Superior Hiking Trail and potentially contact the Superior Hiking Trail Association for information on trail conditions, camping regulations, and any specific guidelines for this section of the trail. Additionally, always adhere to Leave No Trace principles to ensure the preservation of this beautiful area. Be mindful of noise levels, especially when camping in a group, and respect the natural environment and any wildlife you may encounter.

South Sonju Lake Camp Reviews
A much better spot compared to North Sonju. I'll give it 5 stars for scenery since Lilly's Island is about 20 yards down the trail but knock a few stars down for tent/ hammock locations. Be sure to get here early for the prime spots.
Aug 21, 2022 · Blackfox 288It has a camp saw. Huge site to put multiple texts up. We had 15 people with 5 groups. Close to Lilly island. Great water access. Easy hike from the Sonju road parking lot.
May 30, 2017 · Brent HaugerReally nice spot with a lot of room for either tents or hammocks. Also really close to Lilly Island which is a beautiful little island giving you a great view of Sonju Lake
Jun 27, 2016 · Jake ConklinCalm lake with two free non reservable campsites. Sunsets are amazing but no close hikes to scenic overlooks makes this hike for the water views only.
Jul 12, 2020 · Logan MoodyGreat site. The latrine is not the best, but hey... You're in the woods... Who's complaining? Easy water access and great sunset views! Short walk to Lily Island.
