For local nature lovers and those seeking an immersive "camping near me" experience amidst the majestic redwoods of Northern California, Elk Prairie Campground near Orick presents a compelling option. For inquiries or additional information, you can contact them at (707) 465-7354 or their mobile number, +1 707-465-7354.
The environment of Elk Prairie Campground is consistently praised by visitors for its natural beauty. One reviewer described it as a "beautiful campsite," emphasizing the "lush forest" setting. This suggests that campers can expect to be surrounded by towering redwood trees, creating a sense of awe and tranquility. The presence of "dear and elk nearby" is another significant environmental feature, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing directly from the campground. This proximity to wildlife enhances the overall natural experience and makes it particularly appealing for nature enthusiasts and photographers.
The campground offers a variety of campsites, with at least some providing a sense of privacy. One reviewer specifically mentioned site 52 as being "nice and private," suggesting that some sites are well-spaced and offer a more secluded camping experience. Another reviewer also appreciated having a "very nice private site surrounded by trees and a stream flowing behind us," indicating that some sites boast additional natural features like nearby streams, further enhancing their appeal and privacy.
Elk Prairie Campground also provides convenient access to other attractions within the area. One visitor highlighted that "The walk from the campsite to the amphitheatre/visitor center is absolutely spectacular and was actually one of my favourite short walks I found in the redwoods." This suggests that the campground is well-located for exploring the educational and recreational resources available in the surrounding Redwood National Park. Access to an amphitheater could mean opportunities to attend ranger programs or other events, while the visitor center likely offers valuable information about the park's natural and cultural history, as well as trail maps and other resources.
However, it is important to present a balanced perspective based on the customer reviews. One reviewer raised concerns about the level of service, stating that "there was no staff available to talk to during the two days we were there which was concerning." The lack of readily available staff could be an issue for campers needing assistance, information, or to report any problems. This is a point potential visitors should be aware of, especially if they anticipate needing on-site support.
Cleanliness of the facilities is another area of concern mentioned by a reviewer. They noted that "the bathrooms were pretty dirty," which can significantly impact the overall camping experience. Maintaining clean and sanitary restroom facilities is crucial for camper comfort and hygiene. This feedback suggests that the upkeep of the bathrooms might be an area needing improvement at Elk Prairie Campground.
Additionally, the same reviewer reported an issue with the shower facilities, stating that "the shower does not give you the time you paid for. My shower ended up being much shorter than I paid for." This indicates a potential problem with the timing mechanism of the showers, which could lead to dissatisfaction among campers who pay for a specific duration of use but receive less time than expected. This is another aspect that potential visitors might want to consider or inquire about.
Despite these concerns regarding staff availability and the cleanliness and functionality of the facilities, the positive aspects of the campground, such as its beautiful location, wildlife sightings, private campsites, and access to park amenities, led one reviewer to give it four stars. This suggests that the overall experience can still be highly enjoyable, particularly for those who prioritize the natural environment and are prepared for potential shortcomings in the facilities and services.
Information regarding specific services and features beyond what has been mentioned in the reviews is limited. Typically, campgrounds in national parks offer basic amenities such as designated campsites with picnic tables and fire rings. The availability of potable water and trash disposal is usually standard. However, given the mention of concerns about the bathrooms and showers, the overall condition and reliability of all amenities should be considered. It is not explicitly stated whether RV hookups are available, so RV campers should verify this information before planning their stay.
Currently, there is no promotional information available for Elk Prairie Campground in the provided text. To learn about camping fees, reservation policies, seasonal availability, or any special offers, local users should contact the provided phone numbers or visit the official website for Redwood National and State Parks. Reservations are often recommended, especially during peak seasons, for popular campgrounds like those within national parks.
In conclusion, Elk Prairie Campground offers a unique and potentially memorable "camping near me" experience within the stunning redwood forests near Orick, California. Its beautiful environment, opportunities for wildlife viewing (deer and elk), private campsites, and convenient access to the amphitheater and visitor center are significant draws. However, potential visitors should be aware of reported issues regarding the lack of readily available staff and the cleanliness and functionality of the bathroom and shower facilities. Despite these concerns, the overall positive feedback, particularly regarding the natural setting and privacy of some sites, suggests that Elk Prairie Campground remains a highly desirable option for those seeking an immersive redwood camping adventure.

Elk Prairie Campground Reviews
Beautiful campsite. Loved the dear and elk nearby but also loved the lush forest we got to camp in. We had site 52 which was nice and private. There was no staff available to talk to during the two days we were there which was concerning and the bathrooms were pretty dirty. Giving four stars because the bathrooms need to be deeply cleaned and the shower does not give you the time you paid for. My shower ended up being much shorter than I paid for.
May 03, 2025 · Ally KempfOne of my favourite campgrounds from our four week summer camping trip. We had a very nice private site surrounded by trees and a stream flowing behind us, close access to the toilets. The walk from the campsite to the amphitheatre/visitor center is absolutely spectacular and was actually one of my favourite short walks I found in the redwoods.
Dec 02, 2024 · Tom TrottReally great campground down by the creek. The trees are covered in moss and so magical. The bathroom is clean and there was firewood for sale. It was raining super hard when we were there but we still loved it. Ideal for camper vans when it’s raining and maybe not tents. Site 55 was the best one we saw!
Nov 26, 2024 · Silva SkenderiThe best part of this campground, watching the elk. Most of the sites were clean and private. Avoid site #50, if you are in a longer RV or trailer as it was less than accommodating for our 19ft trailer. Most sites were "pull in" vs. "pull through" and some facing wrong direction to back in a trailer. There was one bathroom for the two loop campground and the men's had a horrible urine smell, all 3 days we were there. The two pay showers we used were not consistently hot nor did you get the 2 min offered per quarter. This campground was a good base for hikes in the woods, trips to the beach, and a hike at Fern Canyon. Just a tip If you pay to stay at the campground you do not need to pay the day use fee to get out to Fern Canyon.
Sep 15, 2024 · KOI PondAbsolutely beautiful campground in the heart of the redwoods. The campsites are set next to a meadow and also in the trees. There are numerous hiking trails that start right from the campground. We took the redwood access trail to THE BIG TREE. About 5 miles round trip through primeval forests and next to prairie creek. Sooo beautiful. The campground host, Fred, was very friendly and helpful. The bathrooms and showers (quarter operated) were clean. We had a great stay!
