Based on the available customer reviews, this campground appears to be a beloved spot for those who appreciate a more traditional and nature-focused camping trip. Let's delve into what Ess Lake State Forest Campground offers to local users seeking a getaway in the Hillman area.
Location:
Situated near Hillman, Michigan, Ess Lake State Forest Campground benefits from the scenic landscapes of the state forest. This location suggests an environment rich in natural beauty, likely featuring wooded areas and, as the name implies, proximity to Ess Lake. Hillman is in northeastern Michigan, an area known for its lakes, forests, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. The address on Red Pine Drive further hints at a setting surrounded by pine trees, contributing to a classic northern Michigan feel.
Environment and Ambiance:
The customer reviews provide valuable insights into the environment and ambiance of Ess Lake State Forest Campground. One reviewer enthusiastically states, "This is my favorite place to camp. If you like rustic, this campground is great...it's surrounded by water." This immediately highlights the key aspects: a rustic camping experience in a location encircled by water, presumably Ess Lake itself. The mention of being "surrounded by water" suggests that many campsites might offer easy access to the lake, enhancing the natural appeal.
Another reviewer describes Ess Lake as a "beautiful little lake, with a nice State Forest campground. Lots of space and wooded areas to explore. Crystal clear waters, great for boating fishing and swimming." This paints a picture of a serene lake setting with ample space within the campground and surrounding wooded areas for exploration. The "crystal clear waters" are a significant draw, inviting activities like boating, fishing, and swimming. The combination of the lake and the state forest environment promises a diverse outdoor experience for campers.
The first review also notes that "the outhouses are well maintained, the sites are a generous size, fire pits are newer." This indicates that while the camping is rustic, the basic facilities are cared for, and the campsites offer ample space. The newer fire pits suggest an effort to provide comfortable and functional amenities within the rustic framework. For local users seeking "camping near me" that prioritizes nature and a more traditional camping style over extensive modern conveniences, Ess Lake State Forest Campground seems to offer an appealing balance.

The reviews also highlight the natural amenities such as the lake for boating, fishing, and swimming, as well as the surrounding wooded areas for exploration. While not explicitly stated, typical state forest campgrounds might also offer potable water sources and potentially picnic tables at campsites. However, the emphasis here is clearly on a more self-sufficient and nature-integrated camping experience.

Promotional Information:
While no specific promotional offers are mentioned in the reviews, the enthusiastic endorsements from regular campers serve as a strong recommendation. The fact that one reviewer states, "This is my favorite place to camp. We come here as often as possible," speaks volumes about the campground's appeal. For local users looking for "camping near me," Ess Lake State Forest Campground offers a compelling combination of a picturesque lake environment and a well-maintained rustic camping experience. If you value tranquility, natural beauty, and opportunities for lake-based activities, this campground should be high on your list. To inquire about specific details such as reservations, fees, and any additional amenities, it would be best to contact the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which typically manages state forest campgrounds. Their website or a local DNR office would be the best resource for the most up-to-date information and to plan your visit to this favored camping spot near Hillman.

Jun 08, 2021 · Earl DonajkowskiIf quite and rustic is your flavor, then this is a nice hidden jem for you! Camper or RVs? No hook ups or dump station. But hey, you are camping right? Glampers? Not your ideal spot. DNR was friendly and helpful. Only a few lakeside spots, but several with views of the lake. And the lake? Clear & clean! Not a large lake, but perfect for a kayak small boat or party barge. Fishing from the shore isn't productive. Gotta get out on the lake and fish the edges... clean and very clear water, so you have to stay nearly silent in your approach to fishing.... best bet to catch fish? Jig the edges...

Jun 07, 2023 · Steven LGreat lake for fishing! Lots of fishing boats. Just standing at the boat launch, we saw thousands of minnows. Can only imagine what's in the deeper water! Never swam or camped at Ess Lake, but Lake Avalon is only 10 minutes up the road and they have crystal clear swimming water. My son had a great time catching and releasing.
