For local residents in Michigan and surrounding areas seeking a nostalgic or new "camping near me" experience immersed in the natural beauty of the state, Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground, located at 12414-12550 Shoepac Lake Rd, Onaway, MI 49765, USA, offers a serene retreat within the expansive Shoepac Lake State Forest. While the provided customer reviews offer glimpses into the campground's history and a nearby natural feature, they collectively paint a picture of a location rich in natural appeal and opportunities for outdoor activities.
The environment of Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground is undoubtedly shaped by its namesake, Shoepac Lake, and its setting within a Michigan State Forest. State Forest campgrounds often provide access to a variety of natural landscapes, including woodlands, lakes, and potentially trails for hiking and exploring. The historical review evokes a sense of a tranquil lakeside environment where families could spend extended periods enjoying the outdoors. The mention of fishing for bullheads suggests that Shoepac Lake is a suitable location for angling, likely offering a peaceful setting for both daytime and nighttime fishing.
The reference to staying in tents in the late 1950s and early 1960s indicates a more traditional camping experience, likely emphasizing a close connection with nature. The presence of a large family group further suggests that the campground has historically been a place for creating family memories and enjoying the outdoors together. The desire of the reviewer to "see it all again" after many years speaks to the lasting positive impression of the campground and its natural surroundings.
The second review shifts focus to a specific natural feature in the vicinity: a "sinkhole pathway." The reviewer's observation that the sinkholes "just look like a deep valley" might be helpful for managing expectations for those interested in exploring this geological feature. It suggests a landscape of subtle geological formations rather than dramatic, easily discernible sinkholes. This indicates that the area around the campground likely features interesting topographical variations and opportunities for scenic walks and nature observation along the sinkhole pathway.
While specific services and features of Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground are not detailed in the provided reviews, we can infer some common characteristics of Michigan State Forest campgrounds based on general knowledge and the context of the reviews:
- **Campsites:** Typically include basic amenities such as a cleared area for tents or RVs, a fire ring, and a picnic table. Given the historical reference to tent camping, it is highly likely that tent sites are available. The capacity for larger groups, as suggested by the family in the first review, might also be accommodated.
- **Lake Access:** The name itself implies direct or very close access to Shoepac Lake, likely providing opportunities for fishing, swimming (if permitted and safe), and potentially non-motorized boating such as kayaking or canoeing.

- **Basic Facilities:** State Forest campgrounds usually provide basic facilities such as vault toilets and potable water sources (though it's always advisable to confirm water availability and safety upon arrival). Shower facilities and electrical hookups are less common in these more rustic settings compared to private campgrounds.

Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground Reviews
In the late 50’s and early 60’s my family would go here and stay for two or three weeks at a time. My dad and uncle would fish for bullheads all night then clean and cook them up. We stayed in tents, there were at least six kids with mom and dad. Wonderful times. Need to see it all again and soon as I am now almost 73 y/o!
Apr 06, 2025 · Hamilton MorrisonThis is a review/photos of the sinkhole pathway. You really can’t see sinkholes. It just looks like a deep valley.
Oct 17, 2024 · lisa haaseBeen camping, hiking, fishing at shoepac and the surrounding tomahawk Lake & Flooding since 1986. It’s always been special place to my family and friends, a wonderful place for well trained dogs. Fishing is good for lower mi, I’ve landed some pretty decent sized pike, bass and even a couple trout, they used to stock the trout, but the fishermen in the area weren’t happy about that because it changed the fishing rules for the lake so they transplanted pike caught in the flooding to shoepac, negating the trout and eventually the DNR gave up, Northern Michigan fishing lore I’m sure… we have a lifetime of stories about our times at shoepac lake.
