FamCamp Introduce
For eligible individuals searching for "Camping Near Me" in a serene and amenity-rich environment, FamCamp at Beale Air Force Base in California stands out as a highly desirable destination. Located at 220 Cedar Ln, Beale AFB, CA 95903, USA, and accessible via phone at (530) 634-3382 or mobile at +1 530-634-3382, FamCamp offers a unique blend of natural tranquility and convenient access to a wide array of base facilities, making it a popular choice for active duty military personnel, retirees, and Department of Defense civilians.
The environment at FamCamp is consistently praised for its peaceful and picturesque setting. Situated on rolling foothills next to Lower Blackwelder Lake, the campground offers a "tranquil space to catch a beautiful sunrise overlooking grasslands and rolling hills," as highlighted by its website header image. The remoteness from external road or train noise contributes to a truly quiet atmosphere, allowing campers to unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings. While the camp may feel a "bit full with permanent party and long-term guests," the overall appearance is "fairly well maintained," with green, mowed grass and mature trees spread throughout the campground. The paved RV sites and roads contribute to the ease of navigation and a clean aesthetic. For aviation enthusiasts, a distinct feature of the environment is the opportunity to "watch U2 reconnaissance aircraft fly pattern work," adding a unique element to the camping experience at an active Air Force base.
FamCamp provides a robust set of services and amenities, especially noteworthy for those seeking full-service options when looking for "Camping Near Me." The main area of the FamCamp offers "full hookup" sites, meaning campers have access to water, sewer, and electrical connections (20, 30, and 50 AMP) directly at their spot. There are 44 such sites, accommodating all types and sizes of RVs. For those who prefer a more rustic experience, there are also "outlying areas with dry camping." The central campground office building serves as a hub for essential services, housing a "laundry/lounge/bathroom building." The laundry facilities are a significant perk, offering "free" use of "two large washers and dryers that do a good job." While the popularity of this free service means "there is nearly always someone waiting to do laundry," and sometimes campers might resort to off-base laundromats like Joy Laundry (about 5 miles away), its availability is highly valued. The lounge area provides a comfortable space with a TV, internet hook-up, game closet, and a lending library. Showers and restrooms are also located within this building and are described as clean and well-maintained. A separate RV dump station is conveniently located "a few blocks away from the famcamp," providing a necessary service for all campers.
Beyond the immediate campground facilities, a key feature of FamCamp is its unparalleled access to the extensive amenities available on Beale Air Force Base. The "commissary and exchange are about a mile away from the famcamp," offering convenient shopping for groceries and other necessities. Moreover, campers are encouraged to "take advantage of the two indoor gyms, the outdoor track that has lights at night, the 6-mile roundtrip path through beautiful cattle pasture, the underused community center, free movies, popular bowling alley and active outdoor rec with lots of day trips on their schedule." This comprehensive range of recreational and support facilities significantly enhances the value and experience of staying at FamCamp. The base also features a new shoppette and gas station, including diesel, a few miles from the FamCamp in the housing area. For those with RVs, the Auto Hobby shop even has a lift large enough for large RVs, showcasing the extensive support available on base.
The management and staff at FamCamp are consistently praised for their responsiveness and helpfulness. Reviewers describe the "Campground hosts and manager are very responsive and helpful." This dedication to guest satisfaction contributes to a positive and welcoming atmosphere. While one reviewer expressed disappointment about the lack of a monthly rate, the daily rate of "$30/day" for full hookup sites is considered "a deal considering it is California," and a "good bargain" that attracts many "active duty" campers. Dry camp sites are priced at $20 per night, and tent sites at $10 per night. It's important to note that FamCamp is exclusively for eligible users, including active duty or retired military, Department of Defense civilians, and sponsored guests. Reservations are accepted up to 90 days in advance, with those made less than seven days prior accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. Regarding access to the base, it's crucial to be aware of gate information: the Wheatland gate, often suggested for commercial vehicles, is "only open during the work week during the day," and the "Schneider gate was the main 24 hour gate" during a recent stay. The Vassar Lake gate is also 24 hours but "not large enough for an RV." This practical information is vital for a smooth arrival.
For promotional efforts targeting the "Camping Near Me" audience, FamCamp at Beale AFB should highlight its unique appeal to the military community. Emphasize the tranquil setting, the beautiful sunrises, and the unique opportunity to observe U2 aircraft. The availability of "full hookups" and the highly valued "free laundry" are strong selling points. The extensive list of on-base amenities, including the commissary, exchange, gyms, bowling alley, and outdoor recreation programs, provides a significant value proposition. The affordable daily rates, especially "considering it is California," should be underscored, as should the highly responsive and helpful management and hosts. Clearly stating the eligibility requirements for staying at FamCamp will ensure that marketing efforts reach the correct audience. Providing updated information on base access gates is also crucial for seamless visitor experience. By focusing on its quiet, well-maintained environment and the unparalleled convenience of on-base facilities, FamCamp can effectively attract eligible campers seeking a comfortable and enriching experience.

FamCamp Reviews
The campground office/laundry/lounge/bathroom building is tucked in the back corner of the famcamp area. Depending on the size and type of your RV, you may have to get creative with how you back into your spot which is one of 8 spokes in a fairly compact circle. The fampcamp is made up of several of these circles. The main area is all full hookup. There are some outlying areas with dry camping. There is a separate RV dump a few blocks away from the famcamp.Laundry is free. There are two large washers and dryers that do a good job, but due to the length of time it takes to do a load and the number of campers, there is nearly always someone waiting to do laundry. There were a few times during our 9 week stay that we gave up and went to Joy Laundry that is about 5 miles off-base.The commissary and exchange are about a mile away from the famcamp. Also, make sure to take advanage of the two indoor gyms, the outdoor track that has lights at night, the 6-mile roundtrip path through beautiful cattle pasture, the underused community center, free movies, popular bowling alley and active outdoor rec with lots of day trips on their schedule. There's more to do, you just have to find it!Campground hosts and manager are very responsive and helpful. We were disappointed that there is no monthly rate, but at $30/day, it is a deal considering it is California. In fact, that is such a good bargain that many of the campers are active duty.FYI: The Wheatland gate that is suggested due to the commercial entrance is only open during the work week during the day. At the time of our stay, the Schneider gate was the main 24 hour gate. The Vassar Lake gate is also 24 hours, but is not large enough for an RV.
Mar 13, 2024 · Laurel BLike Edwards AFB, a bit of a haul from the interstate, but a tranquil space to catch a beautiful sunrise overlooking grasslands and rolling hills (website header image). Overall, the park appeared fairly well maintained albeit a bit full with permanent party and long-term guests. Home to U2 reconnaissance aircraft, plenty of opportunity to watch them fly pattern work if you are an aviation enthusiast.
Jan 09, 2024 · Vee KThe rates went up to 1200 a month as of 1 March 25, picture was last fall.
Mar 22, 2025 · William MoracaMy wife and I enjoyed our time here alot. The coyotes would sing every night during "taps" ; clean restrooms, laundry room, clean place to cook and eat if you didn't want to rough it the whole time. Overall a wonderful experience. Thank God for famcamp @beale afb
Oct 19, 2021 · Dennis RedmanAs most campgrounds it needs a little extra maintenance, but one important factor is the staff. Extremely friendly and helpful. I would personally be willing to pay a little more if it would help get some of the maintenance stuff done quicker. Of course it is up to the base leadership to inject a little capital for maintenance. They are doing some work around the restrooms and the laundry facilities are real good. It is pretty quiet and peaceful for being on an Air Force base. I definitely recommend staying.
