Garnet Lake Campground Introduce
For local residents and travelers seeking a tranquil and budget-friendly "camping near me" experience in the scenic Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Garnet Lake Campground in Naubinway offers a charming and peaceful retreat. Located on Park Rd, Naubinway, MI 49762, USA, and reachable by phone at (906) 635-5281 or mobile at +1 906-635-5281, this campground, formerly a State Forest Campground and now owned and operated by Hudson Township, provides a unique lakeside setting with a focus on quiet enjoyment of nature.
Under the platform category of "camping near me," Garnet Lake Campground stands out for its small size, its picturesque lake, its affordability, and the consistently positive feedback regarding its peaceful atmosphere and well-maintained facilities, particularly its outhouses. If you are looking for a serene escape away from crowded campgrounds, with opportunities for fishing and a close connection to nature, Garnet Lake Campground is a hidden gem worth discovering.
The Environment: Small, Pretty Lake and a Peaceful Setting
The central environmental feature of Garnet Lake Campground is the namesake Garnet Lake itself, described by a reviewer as "small and pretty." This intimate lake likely offers a more secluded and tranquil atmosphere compared to larger, more heavily trafficked lakes. While its size might limit certain water sports, it is noted as "probably good for fishing," making it an appealing destination for anglers seeking a peaceful spot to cast their lines.
The presence of a "sandy" beach area suggests some opportunity for lakeside relaxation. However, potential campers should note the observation that "the water looks a little silty and has some reeds." This indicates that while there is a sandy entry point, the water clarity and vegetation might not be ideal for swimming for all preferences. Visitors who prioritize swimming might want to consider this aspect when planning their activities.
The campground itself is characterized by its limited number of campsites. With "only 10 sites," and "a couple are lakeside," Garnet Lake Campground offers a more intimate and less crowded camping experience. The large size of the campsites is a definite plus, providing ample space for tents, vehicles, and enjoying the outdoors. The fact that "The road actually passes right through the campground" is a noteworthy environmental detail. While it might offer easy access to sites, campers should be aware of potential vehicle traffic within the camping area.
Despite the road proximity, the overall atmosphere is described as "Very peaceful" and "Quiet," making it an ideal destination for those seeking a relaxing escape from the noise and bustle of everyday life. The campground's location, "still a ways off the heavily traveled roads," further contributes to its tranquil ambiance.
Services and Features: Basic Amenities with Exceptional Upkeep and Affordability
Garnet Lake Campground offers a range of basic services and features that prioritize functionality and cleanliness. One of the standout features, surprisingly, is the condition of its restroom facilities. A returning camper enthusiastically declared the firewood donation system and the "best kept outhouses I’ve ever come across…" This exceptional praise for outhouses suggests a remarkable commitment to cleanliness and maintenance of even the most basic amenities, which can significantly enhance the camping experience in a more rustic setting.
The campground operates on a self-service model for firewood, requesting a "$ donation" in exchange. This system relies on the honesty and generosity of campers and provides a convenient way to have firewood available for campfires.
With only 10 campsites, the campground offers a more exclusive and less crowded feel. The availability of "a couple" of lakeside sites is a desirable feature for those who want direct access to and views of Garnet Lake. The fee for camping is remarkably affordable at "only $10 a night!" making it an exceptionally budget-friendly option for enjoying a lakeside camping experience in the Upper Peninsula.
It is important to note that the reviews do not mention the availability of amenities such as showers, electrical hookups, or water hookups at individual sites. Given its history as a State Forest Campground and its current operation by a township, it is likely that the focus is on providing a more rustic camping experience with basic amenities. Campers should be prepared for a more primitive setup while appreciating the cleanliness and tranquility offered.

Sep 22, 2021 · Boho MamóTraveled across the UP last year trying to locate a perfect location. FOUND IT!! Quiet. Closer to gas and shops but still a ways off the heavily traveled roads. Fire wood(please make $ donation) best kept outhouses I’ve ever come across…I’ll be back in a couple months!!
Aug 01, 2023 · Mike ReddyTypical campsites here are very open to neighboring sites with minimal vegetation between them to provide privacy. Some newly-developed campsites on the far end of the campground provide better privacy and direct lake access.Lake appears swimmable, though the campground lacks a formal beach.Facilities are clean and well-maintained.
Sep 17, 2023 · Greg Kruegerstayed there for a week and trains went by at 3, 4, and 6 AM on different nights. sandhill cranes also woke me up every morning at 6AM, can’t really blame them though (: . not very clear signage, so i kept driving down the dirt road it’s on for a ways because it’s not clear where the campsites end. it had free firewood (with donations i believe, not sure as i didn’t use any) and the spots were a decent size. some were on a bit of a slope, especially ones by the lake unfortunately. nice clean restrooms, the less modern ones smelled better as i’m assuming they get used less. on the surrounding roads/trails near the bathrooms, there are huge blackberry and raspberry patches!
Aug 09, 2023 · madalynWe primarily rustic camp, and this one is the favorite. Large lots, beautiful shallow lake, and even cutely decorated outhouses. A highlight was spending time observing a bald eagle.
