Are you a local resident seeking a "camping near me" experience that prioritizes natural beauty, tranquility, and a more traditional camping feel, away from large RVs? Hog Island State Forest Campground, located at N7590 Hiawatha Trail, Naubinway, MI 49762, USA, offers just that. Situated in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, this campground appears to be a cherished destination for those who appreciate a quieter, more nature-focused camping experience. Based on the heartfelt reviews from long-time visitors, Hog Island State Forest Campground provides breathtaking views, a peaceful atmosphere, and a sense of connection with the natural environment.
Immerse Yourself in the Stunning Natural Environment of Hog Island
Hog Island State Forest Campground is lauded for its "amazing views," suggesting a location that offers significant natural beauty. One reviewer specifically mentioned the "brilliance of the setting sun, by moonlight," an unexpected and stunning experience they had from Site 14, noting that many other sites share this same view. This indicates that the campground is situated in a location that provides exceptional scenic overlooks, likely of a lake or vast natural landscape, making it a prime choice for those seeking picturesque "camping near me" options. The campground's appeal is further enhanced by its environment that caters to those who prefer tent camping and a setting less dominated by large recreational vehicles. One reviewer explicitly stated it's the "best place to camp! Especially if you enjoy not being around a bunch of giant metal campers," highlighting the focus on a more traditional, nature-centric camping experience. The spacing between campsites also contributes to the peaceful atmosphere, as noted by a visitor who appreciated the quiet and the fact that any music or noise from other campers was not loud due to the distance between spots. This emphasis on a quiet and visually stunning natural environment makes Hog Island State Forest Campground an attractive retreat for those looking to escape the noise and crowds often associated with more developed campgrounds.
Understand the Services and Expected Amenities
When considering "camping near me," it's important to have realistic expectations about the services and amenities, especially at a state forest campground that often emphasizes a more rustic experience. Based on the reviews, we can infer some of the likely offerings at Hog Island State Forest Campground:
- Spaced-out campsites: The positive comment about noise levels due to spaced-out spots suggests that the campground is designed to offer a degree of privacy and tranquility between campsites. This likely means individual sites are well-defined and not in close proximity to each other.
- Outhouse facilities: One reviewer mentioned that the "out houses didn't smell (at least when I was there)," indicating that the campground provides outhouse-style restrooms. The positive note about the lack of odor suggests that these facilities are reasonably maintained, although they are a more basic type of restroom compared to flush toilets.
- Scenic views: The repeated emphasis on "amazing views" and the specific mention of sunset and moonlight views from various sites indicates that enjoying the natural scenery is a key feature of this campground.
- Quiet atmosphere: The campground is described as "nice and quiet," making it ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat.
It's important to note that state forest campgrounds often have more basic amenities compared to private campgrounds. While potable water sources, trash disposal, and potentially fire rings and picnic tables at each site are likely provided, amenities such as showers, electrical hookups, and RV dumping stations are less common in such settings. Given the focus on tent camping mentioned in one review, the services likely cater more towards a traditional camping experience. For detailed information on all available amenities, contacting the campground directly is recommended.

While the reviews don't explicitly mention specific activities, the location in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan suggests opportunities for hiking, nature observation, and potentially access to nearby lakes or trails for further exploration. The name "Hog Island State Forest Campground" implies it is situated within a state forest, which typically offers various outdoor recreational activities. However, it's crucial to come prepared with "LOTS of bug spray," as mentioned by a reviewer, indicating that insects can be prevalent in the area, especially during certain times of the year.

Hog Island State Forest Campground Reviews
Best place to camp! Especially if you enjoy not being around a bunch of giant metal campers 😉 the views are amazing, the out houses didn't smell (at least when I was there) I've been going since I was a kid so it's a very special place to make good memories ❤️ just bring LOTS of bug spray!*It was also nice and quiet, and if people had music/noise it wasn't very loud bc the spots are spaced out
Jul 08, 2024 · lydia martinSeeing the brilliance of the setting sun, by moonlight, is not something I ever expected to experience, but here it is. Site 14, but many others have this same view. Stunning!
Oct 12, 2024 · Lara SherefkinGreat State Forest Campground. The location of this campground is the best, being right on Lake Michigan. The sunsets are quite nice, like many are on the coast of Lake Michigan. And something about the giant pine trees, both in the campground and down by the water, make this campground majestic. The spots here are very nice and spacious. Try to get a spot near the water if you decide to camp here. It's well worth it.Much like the other state forest campgrounds, there are not any showers or electric. It's pure rustic camping. It's a true feeling of nature when camping in this place. If you are coming from the Lower Peninsula and you drive down 2, the roadside beaches are little hidden gems. They are kind of low-key. So if you are reading this right now, don't tell anybody about them :)I never had any flaws in which I ran into at Detour state forest campground, which is on the other side of the UP on Lake Huron. No bugs, clean toilets, and firm ground to set up your gear.Overall, this campground gets a thumbs up.
Jul 15, 2022 · Albert EmeryThis is probably the best State Forest campground that we have been to. Lots of open space, generous site sizes, and write up next to the Lake Michigan shoreline. It's a quiet campground despite others just miles to the east being filled up. Well groomed trails and everything cut nice and neat. Met the camp liaison officer and he was a really cool dude. Definitely recommend!
Jun 26, 2022 · Ben BlissettWe've camped here several times over the past few years, and it is one our favorites! It's very nice and usually isn't very busy. And all the sites are beautiful, especially the ones right on lake Michigan! Some of the sites are too small for a fifth wheel or camper, but mostly they are all nice sizes. And there's also an awesome zoo across the road!
