Based on recent customer reviews, this state-managed area is recognized for its peaceful environment and well-maintained grounds, making it a consideration for those seeking a natural retreat close to home. However, there are also some important factors to be aware of regarding the facilities and local wildlife.
The environment of George Washington State Campground and Management Area is described as "very nice" and "peaceful," suggesting a tranquil natural setting typical of Rhode Island's state parks. As a "Management Area," it likely encompasses a significant tract of land with diverse natural features, potentially including woodlands, trails for hiking, and possibly water bodies such as ponds or streams, although these are not explicitly mentioned in the reviews. The well-maintained aspect indicates that the park is cared for, contributing to a pleasant outdoor experience. For local users searching "camping near me" who appreciate a well-kept natural environment for relaxation and outdoor activities, this state campground could be a good fit. The potential for hiking and exploring the management area adds to its appeal for nature lovers. The peaceful atmosphere suggests a quieter camping experience, potentially away from more crowded commercial campgrounds.
The services at George Washington State Campground and Management Area receive mixed feedback in the provided reviews. One long-term camper (75 nights) praised the staff as "absolutely fantastic" and noted that the campground is "well maintained and clean," giving it a strong positive endorsement. This suggests that the staff is helpful and that general upkeep is a priority. However, another reviewer pointed out a significant issue with the cleanliness of the portable toilets, stating they "don’t get cleaned" even over a three-night stay and recommending that visitors "bring your own." This discrepancy in cleanliness reports is something local users should be aware of. The frequent presence of staff or park rangers patrolling the area (every 45 minutes or so) suggests a focus on safety and security within the campground. Information about other standard campground services, such as shower facilities, water hookups, or dump stations for RVs, is not provided in these reviews. For local users searching "camping near me," it's important to note the positive feedback regarding staff and general maintenance but also the concerning report about the cleanliness of the portable toilets, which might be a significant factor for some campers.
The features of George Washington State Campground and Management Area extend beyond just campsites. The potential for hiking trails within the management area is a significant feature for those who enjoy exploring on foot. The peaceful environment lends itself to relaxation and enjoying the natural surroundings. However, one review highlights a crucial safety consideration for families with children: the presence of coyotes that start howling around 7-8 pm, advising against letting children go out unsupervised after sunset. This is an important piece of local knowledge for anyone considering camping here, especially families searching "camping near me" with young children. The positive reviewer who stayed for an extended period implies the availability of campfire opportunities, mentioning cooking over a rotisserie he made for the campfire. This suggests that campfires are permitted and likely a central feature of the camping experience. The well-maintained nature of the campground, as noted by one reviewer, contributes to the overall positive experience. However, the reliance on portable toilets and their potential lack of cleaning, as mentioned by another, is a feature that some campers might find less desirable. The frequent ranger patrols could be seen as a feature contributing to safety and security.
The provided reviews do not contain any specific information about promotional offers at George Washington State Campground and Management Area. Local users searching within the "camping near me" category should consult the official website of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) or contact the campground directly at the provided phone numbers to inquire about camping fees, reservation procedures, and any potential discounts for Rhode Island residents or off-season rates. State parks sometimes offer seasonal passes or special programs, so it would be worth investigating these options if you plan to camp frequently at state-managed areas. Given the positive feedback regarding the staff and the well-maintained grounds, it is likely a popular destination, so inquiring about reservations well in advance, especially for weekends or holidays, is advisable. Checking the official website or contacting the park directly is the best way to obtain accurate information about any available promotions or special rates for local campers.
In conclusion, George Washington State Campground and Management Area near Chepachet, RI, offers a potentially attractive option for local users searching within the "camping near me" category, particularly those seeking a peaceful and well-maintained natural environment. The positive feedback regarding the friendly and helpful staff and the overall cleanliness of the grounds is a significant draw. However, the reported issue with the cleanliness of the portable toilets is a crucial consideration. The presence of coyotes and the recommendation for child supervision after sunset are also important safety aspects to note. The potential for hiking and enjoying campfires adds to the appeal for outdoor enthusiasts. Local campers are advised to contact the Rhode Island DEM or the campground directly to inquire about reservation procedures, fees, and any available promotions. While the reviews offer valuable insights, obtaining the most current information from official sources will help local users make an informed decision about whether George Washington State Campground and Management Area is the right choice for their camping needs.

George Washington State Campground and Management Area Reviews
10/27/24Well I'm crazy John and my dog is named crazy camo. We are coming to the end of our 75 nights here since the end of July. The staff was absolutely fantastic. It's well maintained and clean. We give it two thumbs up. I'm trying to add a video to this site. So if you are able to watch it while I was cooking the steak on the rotisserie that I made for over the campfire. You will notice a case of keystone light beer. That was just an empty box in my truck because I live in my box truck and I was using it for trash that's all. THANK YOU CRAZY JOHN AND CRAZY CAMO TO ALL THE STAFF MEMBERS.
Oct 27, 2024 · John PaonIt’s a very nice peaceful place. Only down fall is the portable toilets don’t get cleaned. Stayed 3 nights and they never once got cleaned.(Bring your own) Staff or park rangers drive around every 45mins or so. Also if you have any kids wouldn’t recommend letting them go out without supervision when the sun sets. Coyotes start howling around 7-8pm.
Oct 01, 2024 · Sebastian CorporanI didn't have a reservation, and there were cars in the turnaround. I really just wanted to empty my campers holding tanks anyway. I asked the attendant if they had an RV dump, and without looking up from her phone, she said no. I then asked if she could open the gate so I could get my truck and trailer turned around, and again without looking up from her phone said no. I said I need to turn my truck and camper around. Annoyed, she said she can't let me in without a reservation and I can turn around right there (in a space of about 4 parking spots). So I proceeded to make about a 100 point turn in my truck and camper while she sat in the office playing on her phone.
Oct 19, 2024 · Chad DeaverArrived to check in 15 minutes early - told we had to wait that 15 minutes before they would help us. Another older couple had been waiting an hour to check in - both sites were empty! The man said I just want to sit by my camper and read my book. Not a great intro to RI if you’re coming from out of state. We rented a cabin - the website site does not tell you there is no mattress or padding on the beds - we had a miserable night no sleep. Also 2nd car (even with RI plates) will cost you an additional $12.Cabins are close together in an open semi circle.
Oct 09, 2024 · K TaylorUsually love G Washington and have great time here but our neighbors on site 16 July 29-30 made us rethink how often we come. Our site was unusually dirty when we got in to site 17. Egg shells, raw meat, burnt potatoes and onion was found around the fire pit and thrown into the woods just beyond the pit. We camp with 2 dogs so we couldn’t just let them out on their lead not knowing what else was thrown around there. It poured Sunday night so our tenting neighbors left. But for some reason they came back at 4 am and with their headlights on swung into our site to check on theirs. 4 am, headlights blaring right into our camper, rude isn’t even the word for that.On Monday morning my husband heard people having sex in the shower in the men’s bathhouse, and in the ladies I’d probably rather deal with that than the 3 unflushed, uncleaned toilets. Our lovely neighbors who were pleasantly nowhere to be seen all day Monday, showed up around 10 Monday night and stayed up the entire night, talking at normal volumes. Then after an all nighter, started breaking camp loudly at 5 am! They unlocked and locked their car, making it beep each time, at least 4 times. They dropped metal tent poles, dumped coolers of ice and continued to speak at normal volumes all before 6 am.The neighbors, and the unclean sites are definitely NOT our usual experience here. The cleanliness has gone down from our past experiences. The neighbors are beyond the campgrounds control, but there is nobody for you to complain to or to uphold camping etiquette overnight. The people at site 16, do better. When you camp you’re not alone, you have to consider quiet hours and your neighbors.
