We stayed at this site for a couple of nights in October. There's plenty of space for a big group, and it's nice and flat, but most of the ground is very rocky. You'll want to bring sturdy pegs and lots of padding if you're camping in a tent. The bathrooms were clean and in good shape, but they are vault (non-flushing) toilets. Forget sleeping in, because the quiet hours for OHVs ends pretty early in the morning, and you will hear them all around. But the area is very lovely and isolated, and we all had a great time. - Steve Herrin

GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND Introduce

Looking for a spacious group camping area or a convenient basecamp for off-highway vehicle (OHV) adventures near you? For those in Stonyford, California, and surrounding areas searching under the category of "camping near me," GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND, located on Forest Route 18N01, Stonyford, CA 95979, presents a notable option. While it might not be ideal for all types of campers, particularly those seeking a traditional tent camping experience with serene natural views, Gray Pine offers specific advantages for large groups and OHV enthusiasts.

Based on customer reviews, the environment of GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND is described as "lovely and isolated," suggesting a degree of seclusion within the Mendocino National Forest. The campground offers "plenty of space for a big group" and features a generally "nice and flat" terrain, making it suitable for accommodating multiple vehicles and setting up a group camp. However, it's crucial to note that "most of the ground is very rocky," which has implications for tent campers. One reviewer mentions that the area was once a "beautiful forested area" but that fires have "taken out most of the low lying trees," resulting in a landscape that now "feels more like desert camping" to one visitor. This suggests that while the isolation and spaciousness are appealing, the immediate surroundings might lack significant shade and the lush greenery some campers might expect from a forest setting. For those prioritizing scenic views, one reviewer advises looking towards higher elevations, such as Mill Valley Campground or Letts Lake, indicating that Gray Pine itself might not offer particularly remarkable vistas.

In terms of services, GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND appears to offer basic but functional amenities. The reviews mention that the "bathrooms were clean and in good shape," although they are "vault (non-flushing) toilets." This is a standard amenity in many less developed campgrounds and requires campers to be prepared for this type of facility. The campground also provides "fire rings" and "picnic tables" at the campsites, which are essential for campfires (where permitted and following regulations) and outdoor dining. It is explicitly stated that there are "no frills," meaning campers should not expect amenities like showers, potable water hookups at individual sites, or electrical connections. The primary focus of the campground seems to be providing a functional space for parking trailers and accessing OHV trails.

The key features of GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND are its suitability for large groups and its direct access to OHV trails. The campground is described as "very large" with the capacity to "fit at least 10 trailers," highlighting its ability to accommodate sizable parties traveling with recreational vehicles. The flat and spacious sites are advantageous for parking trailers and toy haulers, which are commonly used for transporting OHVs. The early end to "quiet hours for OHVs" is a significant feature for those planning to use off-road vehicles, as it allows for early morning trail access. However, this also means that tent campers or those seeking a quiet morning might be disturbed by the noise of OHVs operating in the vicinity.

It is important to understand that one reviewer explicitly states, "This is an OHV campground not designed for tent campers, rather for travel trailers and toy haulers." This is a crucial piece of information for local users considering Gray Pine. While one reviewer did camp in a tent, they strongly recommend bringing "sturdy pegs and lots of padding" due to the rocky ground. This suggests that tent camping is possible but might be less comfortable and require extra preparation. The campground's primary design caters to those with RVs and OHVs who need a basecamp with ample parking and trail access.

Regarding promotional information, the main appeal of GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND for local users searching for "camping near me" lies in its capacity for large groups and its direct access to OHV trails in the Stonyford area. For families or groups of friends who enjoy off-roading, this campground provides a convenient and spacious location to set up camp and readily hit the trails. The ability to split the cost among a large group can also make it an "affordable" option, even though one reviewer notes that it is "pricey to rent" for a single party. The campground's isolation might also be a draw for those seeking a more private and less crowded camping experience, despite the lack of scenic views and tree cover.

For local OHV enthusiasts, GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND serves as a practical and functional basecamp. The large, flat sites can easily accommodate trailers and toy haulers, providing a secure place to park equipment. The proximity to OHV trails means less travel time to reach riding areas, allowing for more time spent on the trails. The early end to quiet hours caters to those who want to start their off-road adventures early in the morning.

However, for local users primarily interested in traditional tent camping, scenic beauty, or a tranquil natural environment, GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND might not be the most suitable choice. The rocky ground, lack of shade due to fire damage, and the noise from early morning OHV activity could detract from a peaceful camping experience. These campers might find more appealing options at nearby locations like Mill Valley Campground (which reportedly still has trees) or the beautiful Letts Lake, as suggested by one of the reviewers.

Before booking GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND, local users are encouraged to consider the following:

  • The primary purpose of the campground is for group camping and OHV access.
  • Tent campers should be prepared for rocky ground and bring appropriate gear for comfort and secure setup.
  • Noise from OHVs can be expected, especially in the early morning.
  • The environment is described as more akin to "desert camping" due to the loss of trees from fires, and scenic views from the campground itself might be limited.
  • Amenities are basic, including vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. There are no showers or water hookups at individual sites.
  • The campground is spacious and can accommodate large groups with multiple trailers.

To make a booking or inquire about availability and specific regulations, local users can contact GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND directly at (530) 963-3128 or +1 530-963-3128. When calling, it would be advisable to ask about the current environmental conditions, any specific rules regarding OHV usage, and whether there are any restrictions or recommendations for tent campers. By considering these factors, local users can make an informed decision about whether GRAY PINE GROUP CAMPGROUND meets their needs for a "camping near me" experience.
