For local residents in the Des Moines and Altoona areas of Iowa searching for "camping near me," Griff's Valley View RV Park & Campground presents an exceptional option that seamlessly blends the tranquility of nature with convenient access to urban amenities and attractions. Located at 6429 NE 46th St, Altoona, IA 50009, USA, this campground offers a welcoming environment for RVers and tent campers alike. You can reach them by phone at (515) 967-5474 or their mobile number +1 515-967-5474.
A Prime Location: Nature and Convenience Combined
One of the standout features of Griff's Valley View RV Park & Campground, as highlighted by multiple reviewers, is its fantastic location. It strikes a perfect balance between being "just remote enough to be in nature" and offering easy access to key destinations. For those looking to explore the Des Moines metropolitan area, the campground is conveniently located within a 10-15 minute drive of the city. This provides opportunities to enjoy Des Moines' cultural attractions, dining scene, and entertainment options without a long commute back to your campsite.
Adventureland Park in Altoona, a major draw for families and thrill-seekers, is also in close proximity to the campground. This makes Griff's Valley View an ideal base for those planning to spend a day or more at the amusement park and want comfortable and convenient accommodation nearby. Additionally, the extensive retail and restaurant options in Ankeny are just a short drive away, ensuring that campers have easy access to shopping and dining necessities and conveniences.
Despite its proximity to these urban hubs, the campground itself is situated on a farm, offering a peaceful and natural environment. This setting likely provides a more serene and scenic experience compared to campgrounds located directly within city limits. The presence of a small lake adds to the natural beauty of the property, potentially offering opportunities for leisurely walks along its shores or simply enjoying the view. The "great landscaping and nature statues" mentioned by a reviewer further suggest that the owners have taken care to create an aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable outdoor space.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the fact that the campground is "literally next to a greenway" is a significant advantage. Greenways often provide paved or unpaved trails suitable for walking, biking, and other forms of outdoor recreation. This direct access allows campers to easily explore the local area and enjoy some physical activity in a scenic setting without having to drive elsewhere.
Exceptional Services and Accommodation
Reviewers consistently praise the accommodating nature of Griff's Valley View RV Park & Campground. One traveler who had to extend their stay due to unexpected high winds specifically commended "Mr. Griff" for being exceptionally accommodating. This personal touch and willingness to go the extra mile in assisting guests speaks volumes about the management and the level of service provided.
The campground is described as being "very affordable," making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers and local residents looking for an economical getaway. Despite its affordability, the positive reviews indicate that the value offered is exceptional, with the amenities and environment exceeding expectations for the price.
Safety and comfort are also prioritized, as evidenced by the inclusion of "complete with storm shelters." This is a significant feature in Iowa, where severe weather can occur, providing peace of mind to campers knowing that there is a safe place to take shelter if needed.
The upkeep and cleanliness of the campground are consistently praised. One reviewer noted that "the area was pretty and extremely clean" and that "the sites were so well kept." This attention to detail in maintaining the grounds contributes significantly to a positive camping experience.
Unique Features and Themes
A distinctive feature of Griff's Valley View RV Park & Campground is the "horse theme" mentioned by one reviewer. This suggests that the décor or perhaps even some of the landscaping elements incorporate equestrian motifs, adding a unique and charming character to the campground. This could be particularly appealing to horse lovers or those looking for a campground with a memorable aesthetic.
The "beautiful pond" is another noteworthy feature, enhancing the scenic beauty of the campground and potentially attracting wildlife. It could also provide a tranquil spot for relaxation or quiet contemplation.
While not explicitly stated, RV parks typically offer essential amenities for RV travelers, such as:
- Water and electric hookups at RV sites (and potentially sewer hookups)
- Dump station for RV waste
- Potentially pull-through sites for easier access for larger RVs
Given the positive reviews from RV travelers, it's likely that these essential amenities are well-maintained and functional at Griff's Valley View.
For tent campers, a well-maintained and level tenting area is usually provided, and the presence of a storm shelter would also be a significant benefit.
Promotional Information and Local Appeal
While specific promotional offers are not included in the provided information, Griff's Valley View RV Park & Campground already offers a significant draw for local users through its combination of affordability, convenient location, and appealing environment. For residents of Altoona, Ankeny, and the greater Des Moines area searching for "camping near me," the campground provides an easily accessible escape into nature without sacrificing proximity to urban amenities and entertainment.
To further appeal to the local community, Griff's Valley View could consider:
- Offering special weekend rates or packages for local residents.

- Hosting local events or gatherings at the campground to foster a sense of community.
- Highlighting the "farm" setting and any related activities or features that might be unique to the location.
- Promoting the proximity to the greenway for local outdoor enthusiasts.
The overwhelmingly positive reviews and the description of the campground as an "amazing value" suggest that word-of-mouth is likely a strong source of referrals for local campers. By continuing to provide excellent service, maintain the beautiful grounds, and offer affordable rates, Griff's Valley View RV Park & Campground is well-positioned to remain a top choice for "camping near me" in the Des Moines and Altoona region.

Griff's Valley View RV Park & Campground Reviews
Fantastic campground close to Des Moines, Adventureland in Altoona, and all the retail/restaurants you can handle in Ankeny. Location is just remote enough to be in nature, and 10-15 minutes to all mentioned above.Just an amazing value! It's a very affordable campground on a farm, complete with storm shelters, a small lake, great landscaping and nature statues, and literally next to a greenway! No complaints, and very much appreciate the hard work these folks have put into this RV park. Thank you 5 stars!
Apr 17, 2025 · Brent BreauxThis RV park was so accommodating. We were traveling through and were able to stay there at the last minute. Then we had to extend our stay due to extremely high winds. Mr Griff was so accommodating. I have stayed at many RV parks but this one has to be the best ever. The area was pretty and extremely clean. The sites were so well kept. I love the horse theme and the beautiful pond. I only wish it was closer to the East Coast so I could stay there again. I highly recommend this park
Apr 01, 2025 · Brenda BeckerNice, clean park, great lots, many pull-through ones available. Great management, ran by people that understand what's important to campers, recreation or business. Slightly pricey but you get what you pay for.
Apr 27, 2025 · Chris MossetTravel For work all over the state. Love love love this rv park! It’s the nicest one I’ve been to in 3 years upon being a camper owner. Busy place, getting used to traffic going by took some getting used to. Though not at all a deal breaker! I’m close to dumpster-walking distance- which I helpful for me when I pack up on weekends to go home. Full service hook ups is amazing!! I often don’t have that luxury. Was a little disappointed there was no picnic table to set up my table top grill, again not a deal breaker at all my tailgate works fine. Only able to stay one month reservations are full- staff I talked to was excellent about referring me to other locations with reasonable extended stay options. Got on cancellation list so hopefully it makes it to me before month is up- would really like to stay here. Also want to say that I feel completely safe being at this rv park being a solo traveling female. Would suggest to anyone.
