Adventureland Campground Introduce
For local users in the Altoona, Iowa, area and those visiting the Des Moines metro, Adventureland Campground, located at 2600 Adventureland Dr, Altoona, IA 50009, USA, offers a campground with a significant advantage: its location. Reachable by phone at (515) 265-7321 or mobile at +1 515-265-7321, this campground is situated in close proximity to various attractions, making it a potentially convenient base for exploring the area. However, reviews from recent customers provide a mixed perspective on the overall experience, particularly regarding amenities and upkeep.
The environment of Adventureland Campground is described by one reviewer as being "in the middle of a city," yet surprisingly "pretty quiet for the most part." This suggests that while the campground benefits from urban accessibility, it still manages to offer a degree of peace and quiet, which can be appealing to those seeking a break from city noise while still being close to conveniences and attractions. The "nice location" puts campers in proximity to a variety of things to see and do in the Altoona and greater Des Moines area, potentially including the Adventureland Park itself, as suggested by the name.
However, feedback regarding the campground's amenities and maintenance presents a more critical picture. One reviewer felt that the campground amenities were "not reasonable" for the price, at least during their visit a few weeks prior. While they acknowledged that the pool would likely not be filled yet during the off-season, they still expressed disappointment with the overall value. This suggests that potential campers should inquire about the availability and condition of amenities, especially during shoulder seasons.
Cleanliness appears to be an area needing improvement. The shower house and restrooms were described as "not clean, barely operational." This is a significant concern for most campers, as clean and functional sanitary facilities are essential for a comfortable stay. However, the reviewer did note a positive aspect: "constant hot water" in the showers, which is a welcome feature.
Another point of contention for one reviewer was the additional charge for firewood. They mentioned being charged five dollars a day for firewood that they had to carry to their campsite themselves. This fee, coupled with the perceived inadequacy of other amenities for the price, contributed to their overall assessment of value.
The appearance of the campground was also mentioned, with "some other long-term campers" leaving "large items near the trash cans," which made the area look "a little gross." This suggests potential issues with site tidiness or enforcement of campground rules regarding waste disposal and storage.
Despite these criticisms, there were positive aspects highlighted. The person working at the check-in office was consistently praised for being "nice, respectful, courteous, and prompt." Positive interactions with staff can significantly enhance the overall experience, even when other aspects of the campground fall short.
Another reviewer who stayed during the Fourth of July had a more positive experience, describing it as a "great place for kids and adults." They specifically mentioned an "empty lot where I played wiffle ball" and the ability for parents to relax nearby. This suggests that the campground might offer some informal recreational spaces suitable for group activities, particularly during holiday periods when a more festive atmosphere prevails.
The Fourth of July reviewer also noted that it was the "best place" for that specific holiday, implying a potentially lively and enjoyable atmosphere during peak times. However, they also mentioned "terrible Wi-Fi," which is a common concern for many campers who wish to stay connected.
Signage within the campground was also identified as an area needing improvement by one reviewer, suggesting that navigating the campground or finding specific facilities might be challenging.
Based on the KOA affiliation implied by the name "Adventureland Campground" (though not explicitly stated as a KOA Journey in the reviews), we can infer some potential services and features that might be available, although their current condition seems to be a point of concern based on the reviews:
- Restrooms and Showers: As mentioned, cleanliness and functionality appear to be issues.
- Laundry Facilities: Common in KOA campgrounds, but not specifically mentioned in the reviews.
- Potable Water and Electric Hookups: Likely available at most sites, catering to both RVs and tents. Sewer hookups might also be present at some RV sites.
- Swimming Pool: Mentioned as likely being closed during the off-season by one reviewer, suggesting its presence as an amenity during warmer months. Its operational status and cleanliness during the season would be important to verify.
- Wi-Fi Access: Noted as "terrible" by one reviewer.
- Camp Store: Often found at KOA campgrounds, offering essentials and souvenirs, but not specifically mentioned in the reviews.
- Recreational Areas: The "empty lot" used for wiffle ball suggests some open space for recreation. Playgrounds or other organized recreational facilities might also be present.
Regarding promotional information, the provided reviews do not mention any specific discounts or special offers. Local users interested in potential promotions, such as seasonal rates, weekend specials, or discounts for local residents, should contact Adventureland Campground directly at the provided phone numbers or visit their official website (if available). Given its association with Adventureland Park, there might be package deals or discounts offered in conjunction with park tickets, especially during the amusement park's operating season.
For local users seeking "camping near me" in Altoona, IA, the primary draw of Adventureland Campground appears to be its location, offering convenient access to the amusement park and potentially other attractions in the Des Moines East area. However, the recent reviews highlight significant concerns regarding the cleanliness and operational status of the facilities, as well as the perceived value for the price. The positive feedback regarding the check-in staff and the potential for recreational activities, particularly during peak times like the Fourth of July, offer some redeeming qualities.
Prospective campers should weigh the convenience of the location against the reported issues with amenities and maintenance. It is strongly recommended to contact the campground directly to inquire about the current condition of the facilities, the availability of amenities (especially the pool and Wi-Fi), and any specific policies regarding firewood or waste disposal. Asking about recent improvements or planned maintenance could also provide valuable insight.
In conclusion, Adventureland Campground offers a "camping near me" option with a prime location in Altoona, IA, close to various attractions. While the friendly check-in staff and potential for recreational fun are positives, recent reviews indicate significant concerns about cleanliness, amenity value, and overall upkeep. Local users should carefully consider these factors and seek current information from the campground directly before making a reservation to ensure it meets their expectations for a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience.

Adventureland Campground Reviews
I would say location is nice, because it puts you in proximity to a lot of things. Campground amenities for the price, is not reasonable at least when I came a few weeks ago. I understand that the pool would not been filled yet, however, still for the price I was a little letdown. The person in the check-in office was nice, respectful, courteous, and prompt. I also did not like that. They charged five dollars a day for a firing that you have to take to your campsite yourself. Being in the middle of a city, it was still pretty quiet for the most part. However, some other long-term campers put large items near the trash cans, which made it look a little gross. The shower house and restrooms were not clean, barely operational. However, they did have constant hot water, which was nice. I gave it a three stars simply because of the location and the person working at the check-in office. The signage could be better and the upkeep and maintenance definitely needs to be improved.
May 01, 2025 · Mike GardStayed here with my friends here for Fourth of July and the memories are hitting. Great place for kids and adults. There is an empty lot where I played wiffle ball, and I never had that much fun. While we play the parents can crack open a cold one and chillax. Best place for Fourth of July. Terrible Wi-Fi though. 3/5
Apr 15, 2025 · Chuck CVery expensive for what you get. The signage is poor. You have to check in at the hotel but there isn’t really parking for campers and it is very easy to accidentally turn into the amusement park. There was only one worker at the desk so check in took forever. Then she gave me a map and told me to go find it myself. Told us we had to wear the wristbands even though none of the attractions were open. We requested a pull through and they gave us a pull in. Sites are run down. Many campers even more so. Lots of broke equipment around. Good amount of road noise
Sep 28, 2024 · Katie HallWe spent 5 months here. Overall, it was a good experience. The shower houses are spotless. Very surprised how clean they are.
Oct 27, 2024 · Rick KimbleyTo call this a campground is a joke, its rundown, no camp office to check in, lots of derelict campers full time, sketchy looking fellow campers. Plus you have to check in at hotel lobby & getting in & out of their parking lot isn't conducive for big rigs! And absolutely no communication amongst desk employees. Our 1st site we discovered after being fully set up was without electricity & after being on hold for well over 30 minutes, we went back to lobby, was informed no maintenance person available so we had to move to another site, no offer of discount or anything, just sorry. We had 2 sets of friends also camping with us & on their arrival they were put in our original non working electric site...WTH?!?! 🤬And they waited on the phone forever, went up to office, waited thru the crowd & were given a site we had asked for & told it wasn't available 🤷♀️And when our other friends arrived they were sent to at least 4 or more sites which were all occupied 🤔Since there's no one checking the sites, no one at the gate checking parking permits ANYONE can drive in & park, pathetic! For the price we paid we expected a heck of a lot better!!! I strongly urge no one use this campground unless you want a freebie 😣
