Reviews from fellow visitors highlight its prime location for fishing, boating, walking, and enjoying the natural surroundings, making it an attractive choice for a local getaway.
When local users browse platforms under the category of "camping near me," Bob Shetler Campground stands out due to its affiliation with the Corp of Engineers and its direct access to the recreational amenities of Lake Saylorville. The positive feedback regarding its suitability for fishing and boating, coupled with the availability of space for walking and barbecues, underscores its appeal as a multi-faceted outdoor destination close to home.
The environment of Bob Shetler Campground is significantly shaped by its location at the base of the Lake Saylorville dam. This proximity offers immediate access to the lake and its associated features. As one reviewer noted, it's a "Great place to fish," indicating the quality of angling opportunities available. The nearby marina further enhances its appeal for boating enthusiasts, providing convenient access to the water for various watercraft activities. The presence of the dam itself might also create interesting scenic views and opportunities to observe water release events, as mentioned by one visitor who went to see the "water that was being released due to the amount of rain."
Beyond the lake access, the campground itself offers a setting conducive to relaxation and outdoor enjoyment. Visitors have mentioned it as a great place "just to hang out," suggesting a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. The availability of space for walking indicates potential trails or pathways within or near the campground, allowing guests to explore the surroundings on foot and enjoy the natural landscape.
In terms of services and features, Bob Shetler Campground offers certain amenities typical of Corp of Engineers campgrounds. Reviews indicate that the campsites are gravel-based and, while spacious, might not be entirely level. This is important information for campers to note when selecting a site and setting up their equipment. The presence of a "good amount of space in each site" is a definite plus, offering room for tents, vehicles, and outdoor gear without feeling cramped.
Essential facilities such as a bathroom are available, and one reviewer noted that it was "clean." However, they also pointed out issues with the showers being flooded and the water temperature being difficult to regulate. This feedback provides valuable insight for prospective campers regarding the condition of the restroom facilities and suggests that improvements in this area might be needed. Despite this, the availability of a bathroom is a fundamental service that contributes to the overall camping experience.
While the reviews don't explicitly mention other services like electrical hookups, water connections at individual sites, or specific recreational facilities within the campground itself, the proximity to the lake and marina suggests that water-related services and amenities are readily accessible nearby. Campers interested in specific services should contact the campground directly at (515) 276-0873 or +1 515-276-0873 for detailed information.
Privacy between campsites is noted as "no significant privacy," indicating that the layout might be more open. This is a common characteristic of some campgrounds and is something for local users to consider based on their preferences for seclusion versus a more communal camping environment.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the inherent appeal of a well-located campground with access to Lake Saylorville serves as a strong draw. The opportunities for fishing, boating, walking, and picnicking in a Corp of Engineers-managed facility often attract local outdoor enthusiasts. Potential promotions might include seasonal discounts or special events related to the lake or the campground, which would be best inquired about directly with the campground management.
In summary, Bob Shetler Campground in Johnston, Iowa, offers a valuable "camping near me" option for local residents seeking a recreational hub centered around Lake Saylorville. Its prime location at the base of the dam provides excellent access to fishing and boating via the nearby marina. The campground offers spacious gravel campsites, though they may not be perfectly level and offer limited privacy. While the bathroom is reported as clean, there have been issues with the showers. The overall environment is conducive to outdoor activities like walking and barbecues, making it a great place to "hang out" and enjoy the natural surroundings. For local users looking for a campground with strong lake access and recreational opportunities, Bob Shetler Campground is worth considering, with the caveat of potential limitations in shower facilities and campsite privacy.

Bob Shetler Campground Reviews
Went to see all the water that was being released due to the amount of rain we got and filled up the reservoir. Great place to fish, go for a walk, barbecue or just to hang out.
May 16, 2024 · Terence RiceVery nice Corp of Engineers campground located at the base of Lake Sayerville dam. Close by marina for boating and fishing. Sites are gravel and not completely level. There is a good amount of space in each site but no significant privacy. Bathroom was clean but showers were flooded and temperature of the water could not be regulated.
Jul 25, 2021 · adamltwDam spillway is amazing, quite the experience. Riveting to watch knowing if you fell in would not survive one minute. Clean, well maintained little park with many friendly and considerate fellow visitors

Sep 05, 2023 · Joyce GunnelsA great campground at the end of the Saylorville Lake. We went during the week, so the campground was very quiet, but I imagine it fills up quickly on Fridays during the summer. Bathrooms and showers were clean. The only "problem" were the vechicals at night on the top of the dam being obnixous! :)
